[meteorite-list] Georgia Meteorite
I was out last night and at aprox.22:03 eastern time when I witnessed a Large fireball as it entered the atmosphere. It was initialy bright white, thought I saw a small piece fragment off of it and extinguish, then it turned greeneish yellow and then bright orange as it disappeared over the Horizon. I was located about 6 miles north of Weaverville, North Carolina and the fireball was coming almost straight down maybe angled slightly off to the east. The best I could tell it was headed south toward Asheville, NC, then Grenn Georgia since it was falling almost straight down and directly south of me. It was totally awesome and the second largest fireball I've ever witnessed. It looked like it had good potential to put at least some small rocks on the ground. Just got lucky as I was only out for about 1 minute before the event and was just happening to be looking directly where it originated. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] RE Georgia Meteorite correction
Something got lost when I switched to plain text. The report should read it looked like it was heading toward Asheville, NC, then Greenville, SC and on towards Augusta, Georgia. Re: [meteorite-list] NYT story
I have been silent on this list too long. I know that Anne Black, John Kashuba, Myself and Many, Many others on this list have lent and or donated material to those poor underfunded researchers that have led to significant new findings and understandings of planetary mineralogy. Without all of us and the interest we promote about meteorites to the general public, Worldwide research would soon go the way of the Australian Scientists. And that is a fact. It takes more than a handful of Scientists with limited resources to procure the vast amount of material that people like us have given them the opportunity to study. Thus making unprecedented leaps and bounds in the understanding of our Solar System and the Universe alike. Re: [meteorite-list] arrowhead found in box of Moroccan meteorite fragments
Hi Tom, Very cool. Do you have a photo? I have seen two arrowheads made out of Gibeons, found in the strewn field area by metal detectors. One was supercool as it hit something hard and the tip got bent into an inward spiral. I tried very hard to get my hands on one, but there were only two and one was spoken for. John S a mineral and meteorite dealer who lives in NC found them in a box of small Gibeons he purchased back around 1998. Re: [meteorite-list] Petrographic Thin Section Maker
Yes, I just talked to Dave earlier today before I saw this thread. It may explain some of the stress I could sense in his voice when we spoke. Not only is he supposed to be retired, he currently has way too much work to handle. He is starting to feel a little stressed and frustrated and is worried that he can't keep his craftmanship up to the standard of quality he expects. He has had lots of people calling and trying to get him to set dates and meet deadlines etc. He does not work this way. He takes his time and does the job right. The very few special people he does do some occasional post-retirement work for all understand this and often wait a year or more to get some of their material finished. Even though his work is the best, his lab is not the place for just anyone and everyone to start sending material off to. Those of you who know and work with Dave are already well aware of this. For those that do not, I hope that you can respect this delicate situation and only send him material via a personal referral from someone that does work with him if you must, but don't expect it to be easy to find someone willing to do so. He already has more work than he wants to deal with and if he gets inundated with new clients, especially demading ones, I fear he will completely retire. Those of you that are close to Dave like I am all know what that would mean. It would not be good for the meteorite collectors of the world. An extremely valuable assett to the meteorite community will be gone forever. These are the facts, plain and simple. Not just my opinion. Jeff Hodges Alexander Seidel [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ouch, Bernd, this name dropping should better have been kept a little bit more under the cover! Sorry, but this is my opinion for many a good reason which the other persons named, who know that specific slide maker, may second... Then again you are right, of course. Hi Paul and List, If *quality* is the key word, there is only one thin section maker: David Mann from New Mexico! He is the one who used to make David New's thin sections and thin section collectors like Alex Seidel, Mark Bostick, John Kashuba, and others know that these TS are beyond compare!
