And if you have a problem with someone breaking the list rules, you
contact Art, not the other 600 of us out here.
Otherwise you're just being a hypocrite.

Jason and fellow List members,
My response to Art was an Re: to his email to the List.
Sorry if that violated your newly proposed rule #9.
As a respectful List member I will attempt to mend
my hypocritical ways and be more courteous.

I agree with you that disputes should not be broadcast
when they can be settled and/or should be taken off line.
I have contacted or tried to contact steve before I've
posted to the List. steve has never responded to my
private emails. And I also (hypocritically) agree that
Art should be emailed privately.

But when those methods don't work, List members should
be allowed to discuss List matters or rules violation
without personal attacks (#3).

My suggestions: An administrative action is the best solution,
(privately email Art), a second solution is to bribe
the Mexican government during steve's next vacation,
and a third solution previously suggested is for ALL
to NOT respond to steve's emails - my twist - person's
violating this secret directive will be privately
spammed by the collective list members. (pack members will take
over when pack leader does not lead - Cesar Millan)

2004-02-24 Thread magellon

Doug,
I want to applaud your suggestion. I have
tried something similar on my web site.
I listed current questionable auctions.
However, I could not contact the people that
were bidding or had purchased due to ebay rules.
eBay Policy
"* Members are not allowed to interfere
 with another member's transaction.
 * Members are not permitted to email buyers
in an open or completed transaction to warn
them away from a seller or item. If you have a
problem with a transaction, please use the
feedback forum and review our Fraud Protection
Program. "
Also, I learned the hard way that my web site
could also be used against me. My decision was
to limit it only to IMCA members, but have been too
busy to work on it lately. I am convinced that it is wise
to keep any negative info within the bounds of IMCA.
IMCA has a closed forum that allows its members
to be warned in advance. I run auctions, the purpose
to direct interested ones to IMCA membership.
This glassface1 can burn some newbies.
However, those burnt will learn of IMCA and ask
for membership.
If there are legal ways to help, I am open to
suggestions. I really like "We are a non-profit
organization
helping buyers get authentic meteorites." A web
page or two devoted to what to look for, what
to
ask, when to walk away, etc. would be nice!

I agree the situation is not very happy,
though I have a different path to suggest in accomplishing the goal.
I want to say you analysis was very convincing if the big hammer approach
is to be tried ... enough to tempt anyone. I was very impressed with
the resources available that you mentioned. But please also consider:
First, what is the goal?
Ebay is a giant flea market, is it
not? Or does the flea market being on-line mean people have to be
more ethical? I don't think the mission of eBay is to get tied up
in that sticky issue any more than similar things like porn-proofing the
on-line search engines at the source. Similar messes would result
in a dynamic situation. I have never seen unofficial vigilante cops
running around an asphalt and paint flea market, and the IMCA really has
no such jurisdiction. Please don't interpret this as me cutting slack
to nefarious thieves. Nothing is further from my thoughts.
I think it is just an objective summary of the state of the world at the
moment. So rather than changing the world, perhaps we need to drop
the Policeman of the World ideas and review some other reasonable options
that tend to get us where we want to, efficiently. Some ideas on
the table I'd advance:
1. Who's responsibility is it
to beware? Ans: the buyer
2. Does eBay permit a flea market
policing authority with sanctioning power? Ans: No.
3. What is the IMCA to this?
Ans: A special interest SELLER group.
4. What is it to you if you
aren't the victim? a) Fulfill a desire to be a vigilante. or b) Increase
your sales by giving people more confidence to pay you for your stuff and
getting rid of competitors you can squeal on or c) both or d) Nothing.
5. What is it to you if you
are the victim? Ans: a) Theft; b) Happy anyway ... no perceived problem.
It would seem that this is only a crime
when there is victim, with the possible exception of advertising fraud
as already pointed out - though that is a rather overkill due to its complexity
in preparing the case, a difficult route to take for a flea market, unless
you are a victim, and a very mad one at that !! And it would also
seem that if IMCA were to consider combating fraud within its goals, the
resources should be paid for proportionally, just like the United Nations
type of animal it is, based on sales. Perhaps a three tier contribution.
But then again, perhaps not: Because not everyone in IMCA feels the same
about paying to nail other criminals with their $.
I didn't check if IMCA has in its goals
to combat fraud. I would think, though, that IMCA is a positive bend,
not a crime fighting bend, and as such feels strongly about fraud but does
not make it a general focus for membership. Rather, IMCA I view as
a positive influence saying, with us you buy with confidence. So
based on the above reasoning, I would enter the idea that all IMCA members
interested in policing the eBay world start an anti-fraud squad (best under
IMCA, of course) where everyone has that one sole purpose. Now the
three tier funding works whether in $ or in hours...but how to spend it
efficiently? ...
The real complaint seems to me to be
in part that IMCA is not being marketed as well as many wish it could.
Well ... maybe it should scrap that idea of being vigilantes and work on
improving marketing efforts. For example every time I make a search
on Google for meteorites up pops "I buy, sell and trade meteorites," by
one distinguished member who has his

new buyers that quit the hobby. The more who join,
the more demand. The more demand, the more
valuable your meteorites become. Less demand,
Less value.

IMCA is the answer. The more new persons
who join, the more who will be educated to

to be burnt once to wise up. And that one
quickly learns about IMCA. While they are
being educated they can purrchase from
IMCA members and not have to worry.

Ebay deals with this kinda the same as law
enforcement. You can't have a criminal without
a victim to accuse him.
If enough victims say fraud then ebay acts
But only the victims can make the claim.
The person can not only be thrown off ebay
but can also do jail time.

Pelissons,
Although many have reacted negatively to your report,
I feel just the opposite. You should expand
your definition of NWA meteorites to include all
meteorites found in North West Africa instead of
undocumented stones bought in Morocco.
You never know when those sneaky
kidnapper/smuggler/nomads are going to start
documenting finds just to increase their terrorist's profits.

Thank you for bringing this to the meteorite

This is what you have suggested, is it not?
I know this is difficult but you don't want to appear hypocritical,

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson late accommodations suggestions?

2004-01-25 Thread magellon
Robert,
I just got reservations last night through expedia.com.
I made reservations at Rio Rico Resort and Country Club.
It is a three star hotel located 54 south of Tucson airport
on I-19 (1 hour drive)
The hour drive is offset by the $96.00 room rate.
The place looks beautiful.

 Hi All,

I've finally succeeded in clearing up my schedule to allow me to
go to Tucson this year. Of course, most hotels within 60 miles
of Tucson have been booked for Friday-Saturday nights (6th 7th)
for months, so I knew I'd have my work cut out for me. A couple
places can still be had for $250+/night, but surely there's something
within 40 miles of Tucson for less than that.

Someone (Anne?) recently suggested checking into BB's in and
around Tucson, but every one of the dozen and a half I've checked
so far has been booked. If anyone can suggest a place for under,
say, $160/night, I'm all ears... --Rob

I have had success removing caliche/alkali with a bathroom

Hi,
It is just a suspicious rock until Mr. Rodriqez has it properly
verified and classified by a classifying institution.
Your question should be directed to him.
He should take the same steps everyone else does.

An inexperienced Florida analyst issued a meteorite certificate.
He had never seen a meteorite except in pictures.
Amazingly, he claimed a piece of 'power station chimney build-up'
(removed by cleaning) was 'a meteorite' due to
iron and nickel content.

If it is genuine, let the experts describe it.
I'm suspicious of anyone who wants recognition without

Re: [meteorite-list] Seven New Galaxy Class Meteorites on eBay

2003-11-23 Thread magellon
Andre,
Several years ago Ebay suggested they may remove
all meteorite auctions. Whether they were serious
or not, no one wanted/wants that to happen.

So, I.M.C.A. was born.
While I.M.C.A. cannot prevent the sale of wrongs,
it does provides a safe haven for meteorite transactions.
(20-25% of the meteorite auctions are IMCA members')
Education and expert opinions are for the members' asking.

Why ebay is so slow to eliminate blatant dishonest sellers
(as Sterling documented) is strange. But ebay will never
prevent the auction of wrongs. Bidders can only be better
informed by education.

It is up to us to spread the knowledge. Sellers can encourage new purchasers to join
I.M.C.A., Members can share what they've
learned when the opportunity presents itself.

Recently Dave Freeman was on ktv2 Salt Lake City for a
morning and evening meteorite spot and he displayed his
IMCA logo. ( Way to go Dave!)

The problem is Mis-identification and some fraud,
the solution is education.
Each has to think that I am the solution, now
how can I help and have fun at the same time
Who would like to see your meteorite collection?
Have you thought about sharing your knowledge with others?
Can you make a talk outline?
What grade or class would you like to share meteorite info?
What can I do?

newspaper where people publish classified ads. Clearly, eBay's main
concern is to deflect its responsibility unto someone else.

So, how about if the knowledgeable members of this list contact USA Today
and CNN and regale them with a list of these incidents including Sterling
Webb's excellent statistical analysis reprinted below ? Perhaps the
negative publicity would shame eBay into doing the right and even listening
to experts in various fields when a questionable object is put up for
auction (I'm certain the concept of the weteowrong is present in many other
types of products offered on eBay). Also, someone from the American
Justice Department might become aware of the situation and get the point
across to eBay that even if you claim loud and often that you have no
responsibility, that does not necessarily make it so.

 Andre Bordeleau

 Hi,

The real topic here is feedback on eBay and its effect (or lack of it) on
 bad sellers.
Negative feedback, even massive amounts of it, will not necessarily
  stop a
seller of less than perfect honesty. Last spring, I made the mistake of
impulsively buying an item I stumbled on to just before auction close --
 no time
to check feedback -- but the seller had a positive feedback rating in the
 thousands; why worry?
Ah, well, he also had negative feedbacks by the thousands, too. He
  had over
26% negative feedbacks (about 1600!), all with the same complaint as mine
 turned
out to be: took the money, never mailed the item. I wrote him lots of
 emails; I
filed complaints with eBay; I filed a complaint with the Better Business
 Bureau
 in his state. Nothing.
eBay was useless against this guy. I send them statistical summaries
  of his
feedbacks, showing that this was a long-term pattern of behavior. I wanted
 them
to get him off the site, shut him down, or at least suspend him for a while.
They were not interested in moving against anybody who was generating that
 much
 income in eBay fees, clearly.
About four months into trying to get my money back (or product
  delivered), I
sent a fat email with documentation to the State's Attorney of his home state
with an inquiry as to whether this was their jurisdiction or should I send
 this
to the U.S. Justice Department's Internet Fraud office. The next day, I got a
refund from the guy. Took 127 days. This seller (name withheld to protect the
guilty) is still selling on eBay today. He has over 400 items up right now.
Now that eBay shows the percentage of positive feedbacks, you might think
someone like this would be in trouble with potential buyers. No, eBay
 calculates
that percentage you see for each seller on the basis of ONLY the most recent
negative feedbacks against the total positives for the entire history of the
seller, yielding a meaninglessly high percentage. So, this seller shows a 96%+
rating right now, even though for the past 1 month, his positive percentage is
89%, for the last 6 months, 87%, and for the last 12 months, only 74%.
This means that the positive feedback percentage you see on eBay item
listings is, if not statistically fraudulent, at the very least misleading. A
99.9% rating could mean a seller who has always been great, or it could mean a

Some other material from Northwest Africa that was tested turned out to be

This, once again, proves the importance of insisting that suspected
meteorites be tested before making a purchasing decision. As long as people
bid on meteorite wrongs they will continue to be listed. In this case one
specimen was put up for sale and sold so three more were listed soon
afterwards and also sold. It looks like four people are entitled to a

So there is no meteoritic verification, much less an actual Chicxulub
meteorite
as advertised.
Secondly, Steve Schoner found this article saying that drill samplings
show that
the meteorite was probably a carbonaceous chondrite.
Even this small sample was fossilized. There is no proof that
any original meteorite still exits other than the iridium layer.

[meteorite-list] The Meteorite that panicked a Nation

2003-10-31 Thread magellon
All,
Last evening marked the passing of an event that occurred
Sixty-five years ago. Even though many of us were not yet born,
we have all heard of about the panic associated with this event.

If you had turned your radio on just after 8' o'clock to your favorite
CBS station you would be entertained by Ramon Raquello and
his orchestra when the show was interrupted by a special report
from Intercontinental Radio News. The bulletin was to let people
know that scientists had noticed explosions on the surface
of Mars, and that something was flying towards the
earth at an incredible speed. After the announcement the music
began again. Then another news report came on. This time to
inform the audience that a huge, flaming object, believed to
be a meteorite had fallen to earth at Grovers Mill, New Jersey.
At Grovers Mill it was realized that the object was not a meteorite.
Eventually, a huge creature with a drooling V-shaped mouth
emerged from the object, zapped the people dead, and torched
the field with its heat-ray. And the horror continued
Listeners thought they were tuning in live reports from the scene
but were actually hearing Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater
on the Air with their updated version of H.G. Wells' sci-fi novel
The War of the Worlds.

The War of the Worlds broadcast terrified people from
coast to coast. Families fled their homes, covering their mouths
with handkerchiefs trying not to breathe the harmful black gas.
People packed into churches. Roads leading out of cities were
jammed with cars. People across the nation thought they were
going to die. It is estimated that over six million people listened
to that broadcast, and close to two million thought it was a
news bulletin.

I seemed to feel that another list respondents use of the words cheap
and junk in referring to NWA's and his asking for what seemed to be an
offer to purchase/offer nothing for something was a low blow to the
meteorite hunters and collectors of the world. If NWA's are continually
looked upon by some as nothing less than clutter, why do so many in the
hot deserts even go out to search? We have been blessed as collectors to
have been provided with this abundance to our hobby and business. This
attitude of junk and cheap is a blight to our love of ALL meteorites,
regardless of origin or pedigree status. I see the term inexpensively
priced, or even affordable run of the mill meteorites as not nearly as
 degrading.
Is it the meteorite's choice in falling to hot sands or on a southern
polar ice cap? What meteorite would wish to impact a car, or even a house
so it could be cherished more? Bah! If any meteorite is not worth it's
value, then why ask for any value at all? I too love yard sales but would
not insult a proprietor by offering to take something of value for nothing.

I have, once coined the phrase no-named orphan step child in reference
to unclassified NWA's. At one time, I even publicly endorsed a self ban
on purchasing any meteorite with out a real home until more field data
could have the opportunity to be collected.Even stray puppies need
love and sustenance. The seemingly (and not true) perception of the
abundant / infinite NWA's with (dirt) cheap and junk associations is
not reality, and that perception is, and continues to be, further pain in
many circles. One day, in the future, those with a sence of humor will
muse at this time and hopefully have pause for a chuckle (if they had
purchased at fair value those no-named orphan step children, reasonable
and affordably priced stellar visitors of the hot sand deserts). Indeed,
some NWA's come in a number of packages, some being under the value added
title of Lunar and Martian meteorites.
I would ask of those who would like to aquire NWA's and other hot desert
meteorites with less than debutante status to refrain from asking
dealers publicly to supply them with a source for cheap and junk
anything, especially meteorites, despite their status...or in this case,
 lack of.

 Junk in, junk out

I still do feel that those wanting to get cheap or junk anything
should alter their direction to collecting marbles as they have in my
opinion, lost a few of their own somewhere along the way.
A buyers willingness to actively participate in an honest and fair value
market exchange directly reflects up on that persons integrity in any
 proposed transaction.
Not only does the seller know the value of his wares but the reverse is
true also, the buyer knows the value of what he wishes to purchase.

 Sincerely,
 Dave Freeman

 Dear List,

A quick question regarding rust. I have been mulling
over a simple strategy for the long term care of my
SAs (and other meteorites). Right now it seems that a
good strategy is to give the SAs an alcohol and NaOH
treatment to dispose of the Cl- from fingerprints
etc., and otherwise keep them with VCIs and dessicant.

A possible complication is that several of my SAs were
once wiped with a silicone gun cloth (by me). However,
for the alcohol and NaOH treatment to be most
effective I assume that the silicone coating should
go. What is a good method for removing such a
coating? Will the alcohol and NaOH remove it? If
anyone has some thoughts about this, I would be
interested in them. Hopefully I am asking for
information that is not just waiting in the archives.

 Sincerely,

 Stephen McMann
 --

NaOH with alcohol should remove it.

Mix alcohol 70% with 40% or more of distilled water to
avoid a layer of brine. If such a lay forms keep
adding just enough water to eliminate that layer then
the solution will be ready for soaking specimens.

Currently, I am soaking several meteorites. A big 158
lb Campo for Darryl Pitt, a small slice of Brenham, an
end piece of Doronio, and a slice of Brahin for
 Matteo.

All of these had advanced rusting problems. The large
Campo has been soaking for 6 months in 25 quarts of
solution, it should soon be ready for removal and
drying in another month or so. If the flaking has
stopped the specimen will be cured.

The smaller pieces were treated with a coating, and
the rust was quite bad. In fact two of the samples
had fallen appart, and part of my process is to put
them back together. Once the rusting is cured, after
soaking these pieces for a month, reconstruction can
be done with some patience. (Currently, at this
point in my life I have lots of time).

 I will post the results.

But again, yes, the NaOH will get through any coating
that is on the specimen. In fact it will even soften
a thick epoxy coating softening it like rubber which
 peels off.

I have treated SA's before, and the fusion crust is
not harmed other than the specific areas that are
rusting with chlorides. These spots turn into dark
brown oxides. But the oxide is very thin and
superficial and with a tooth brush comes off to reveal
 the original surface underneath.

  Did meteorite slam Oakland?

By Tom Greenwood / The Detroit News

DAVISBURG -- Live long and prosper -- and duck!

The Road Commission for Oakland County may have had a close encounter of
 the
shooting-star kind when what appears to be a meteorite hit one of its
  maintenance facilities over the weekend.

It happened sometime on Sunday when the yard was locked up and no one was
working, road commission spokesman Craig Bryson said. Two workers came
 in
Monday morning and found an impact crater outside the main garage near the
employee parking lot. When they told me about it, I thought they were
kidding. What's next? We've hired Bigfoot as a snowplow driver?

Bryson said the object left a 12-inch-by-18-inch-by-3-inch crater in the
lot, which may not seem impressive until one learns that the crater is in
 6
  inches of asphalt.

The edges of the crater are seared black, and there's a fan-shaped debris
field spread out all around the site, Bryson said. One of our employees
 is
an amateur astronomer, and he said it looks like every impact crater he's
  ever seen.

There is a good chance it was a meteorite, said David Batch, director of
 the
Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State University.

It's possible, although the description of the crater having charred
 edges
bothers me a bit, Batch said. It could have been debris falling from a
plane, although there's been no reports of anything like that. Fireworks
 are
a possibility, but it would have to be a very strong explosion to have
 made
that big a hole in asphalt. The best thing to do is to have the site
examined and have the debris analyzed.

Meteorites usually fall into one of three compositional categories:
nickel/iron, stone and stone mixed with iron, Batch said. They enter the
upper atmosphere at 40 miles per second but are greatly slowed by
 friction.

If this was a meteorite, it was probably about the size of a fist or
  larger, Batch said.

Workers have marked off the crater with orange cones.

We're going to have our amateur astronomer contact some scientists and
 have
them take a look, Bryson said. But what the heck? What else could it
 be?

Great ball of fire lights up Aucklanders' lives
 www.stuff.co.nz
 06 August 2003

A spectacular fireball blazed across the northern sky yesterday, a piece
of the more than 30,000 tonnes of the normally invisible space junk that
 hits Earth each year.

Observers in Auckland and from as far away as Whangarei described a
flaming, bright-red fireball with a long white tail shooting across the
sky from the northeast just before 6pm.

One man in Auckland suburb Orakei, who reported the sight to One Tree
Hill Stardome Observatory, said the meteor appeared to remain bright as
 it disappeared over the horizon.

Another man, who was driving towards the Auckland Harbour Bridge, said
it was amazing. I saw the white light first and then it flared into a
green flash. I've never seen a green like it before.

Stardome spokeswoman Angela Doherty said the fireball, described as
having a lingering white tail, was a piece of either human
space junk or space rock that wandered just a bit too close to Earth.

Wellington's Carter Observatory spokesman John Field said it would be
difficult to gauge the size of the meteor but said it could have been as
big as a fist or the size of a person's head.

No one had been killed by a meteor but in 1911 one was blamed for
causing the death of a dog, he said.

Most space debris simply fell harmlessly and invisibly to the ground,
heating up and burning as it entered the atmosphere before dropping to
 earth.

2003-08-03 Thread magellon
Last year, 'silkarrow' aka 'asianartifacts888'
discovered when selling 'Nepal Adzes' by simply adding 'meteorite' to
the description, his final auction price doubled or tripled.
This year he is repeating his success with his 'Mekong River Meteorite'.
(Hum, a meteorite in a river for years and it shows no hint of rust?
Neat Trick!) The seller does not know meteorites. He has not returned my
emails when I have asked him for the results of further test he promised
to try on the Adzes.
Buyer Beware!

Has anyone purchased one, had one authenticated or

They are tempting- but after being tumbled in a

Thank You. Have a nice afternoon.

Re: [meteorite-list] Apparent Meteorite Lands In Washington?

2003-07-16 Thread magellon
Hi,
How fortunate that these bored high schoolers not only saw the
flaming meteor but correctly calculated its' trajectory and impact site,
called police, and in the dark, still arrived in enough time to burn
their hands!
How efficient are todays' youth!
(I wonder if they are this competent in cleaning their rooms?)
And how thoughtful of the meteor to fall near their high school!
I especially liked, only to discover several tiny craters filled with
the still-hot rocks.
However, after seeing the photo, I'm sure that these are genuine Canard
fragments.

Hi Ken,

I'll have them check it out, but we had two independent witnesses who
e-mailed us saying they saw a firery streak across the sky as well at the
right time -- one in Tenino and one in Monroe. Three other experts are on
the scene today with our reporter and they seem to agree it was a meteorite
too, so all signs point to it being legit :)

2003-07-16 Thread magellon
Hoax? I think it is more of a case of the fireball falling
several 10's or 100's of miles away, and they mistakenly assumed
rocks they found nearby were meteorites from that fireball.
This is a very common occurance when fireballs are sighted.

This is true.
Perhaps one young man also 'mistakenly assumed' he burned his hands on
the tiny rocks?
(Sorry, but I remember the hoaxes I pulled as a teenager :)

Mark and List,
This sounds like a word-of-mouth story after being passed through a
dozen persons.
(If compared to the first version, it is barely recognizable.)
How can the person driving the sled dogs also be traveling about fifty
feet behind the sled...?
Why was he not on the sled?
What are the chances of a meteor/ite hitting a telegraph line and the
lone
telegraph repairman in remote Alaska?
More likely he was checking or installing the lines and ventured to
close to someone's gold claim/personal property.
Unfriendly as it may be, he wound up on the receiving end of a dynamite
pass.
Then again, the 'meteorite hoaxer' may have moved to Alaska!
There is no mention or record of any meteorite from that area!

John and All,
If this story wasn't bizarre enough already, below is
a letter sent to me by the seller.
The test results:
http://emc.biol.sc.edu/client/philb/
Dr. Gardner told me they weren't really into meteorites...
Whether the specimen is actually a
meteorite, I'll let you come to your own conclusion.
The seller is NOW going to GIVE the specimen to the highest bidder for
FREE?
This is one of the oddest specimen/owner combinations I have
experienced.(I don't know which is more unusual?:)
Best,
Ken---BeginMessage---

Dr. Gardner referred me to Dr. Podlonski (sp?) who did an electron microscopy of the specimen.
The results are at the link at the subject heading of this email.
Initially, he was moderately certain that it was a meteorite due to many things including slight nickel content and "flow lines" which were/are very smooth.
He thought enough of it to spend the time and money to analyze it anyway.
FWIW, I'm not intending on accepting any money from anyone who bid or the winner.
It sure was cool seeing the flash in the sky by me and my Dad though in tiny ole Lugoff, SC.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

Hi,
Actually, Walter was going to look into the Tybee Ga. 'fall'.
The news photo sure looks like a rock:

The Columbia SC ebay auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2176712425

Also see 2nd item down with picts:
http://home.earthlink.net/~magellon/updates.html

Seller's story is contradictory yet not lacking important facts.
First two photo look promising, last two lightened photos look like
pitted slag.
If anyone knows high bidder, I have an email from seller stating:
If not I apologize, but my intent is to sell it if it is a
meteorite (which it appears to be) and refund any and all monies to any
purchaser if it is verified not to be..and also provide a
certificate of analysis signed by the researcher on institution
 letterhead.

Why he doesn't wait till he has these things in hand is idiotic!

All,
I am forwarding Mr.Dan Ray's (raylunar) well deserved I Told You So!
When notified of the possibility that his first auction may be
incorrect,
he quickly canceled his auction.
A very humble and honest response.
Even after having some pieces verified as CD, Mr. Ray again, shut down
his auction for a second time and followed suggestions.
We simply do not always see this level of professional behavior on eBay.
I too apologize for doubting his auction and making him go through so
much trouble.
But more importantly, I applaud and commend him for keeping his cool
among a group of 'know it all' meteorite enthusiasts.
Thanks for teaching us 'a thing or two'!

Tom,
Sorry to see you go.
Many of the now successful meteorite dealers once worked for other dealers to
learn the business.
(they had a dream and persued it)
I look at the LIST as an ongoing education you can't get at any university.
It only cost the time to study and enough interest to question.
Everyone needs a dream even an impossible one.
However, if seeing 'out of reach deals come and go' depresses you,
perhaps you need to rethink what makes you happy and why.
There will ALWAYS be many fantastic deals for LIST members simply by Nature
and the nature of its members.
You have discovered a precious gem, don't discard it as a wrong unless you have
found something of greater value.

 Hello,

Breaking News! Two different investigative teams have determined that the
latest fall in Chicago is actually an achondrite...likely a Gabbroic breccia
from the planet Venus. The two teams, one in Texas and the other somewhere
 in
the Middle East, have also confirmed their findings with orbital studies.
 More
information to come. Estimated price changes with this new information is
expected to increase from the present prices of $0 to $1 a gram on the
 street
corner, $6/g in Italy, and $30 to $200 on the internet to somewhere close to
$50,000 a gram. This truly was the million dollar fall. You lucky stiffs
 with
 all the rock...when in Pennsylvania???

 Can't reveal my sources yet...maybe tomorrow...not today.

Adam Hupe wrote:

Dear
List Members,Wow,
lots of emails concerning the new Chicago fall. I was going to try
to get back into the meteorite scene slowly but could not resist the temptation
of a new fall and was thrust back into the fire. Al Lang and I decided
to leave Park Forest yesterday because the feeding frenzy and greed was
getting to be too much.Here
is a long rundown of some of our experiences in case anybody is interested.Day
oneHad a deal on the only
oriented stone we observed the entire time we were there and had a museum
director destroy our deal by telling the seller not to sell to us until
the museum had a chance to make an offer on it first. The seller
was then encouraged to donate the stone for a write-off. Most of
these people are not in a position to take advantage of a tax write off
because they are in the lowest income bracket. A donor can only write-off
expenses incurred so basically they were giving these stones away free
or they will unknowingly break the law if they try to write them off at
$15.00 a gram. This shows blatant disrespect and abuse of perceived
power. I am so disgusted in these three professionals that I will
discourage any donations of material to their respective institutions unless
they are reprimanded. On the positive side meteorite dealers and
collectors behaved themselves for the most part in a much more professional
manner.We were at
the police station when we heard a gunshot fired around the corner at about
7:00 p.m. prompting us to leave the area and find a hotel.Purchased
very little material at the initial $1.00 a gram price because we only
wanted the best stones, we observed about 40 kilograms found in less than
10 hours and thought hundreds of kilos would show up by the next day.Day
twoScoured the neighborhood
for deals but the word was spread on the news not to sell to meteorite
dealers who were there to take advantage of the finders. A new street
price was established at $3.00 a gram because this is what a museum was
offering. We purchased a single stone at this price.Went
searching for meteorites and found a 24 gram specimen laying between a
curb and a sidewalk. An old woman observed me picking it up and accused
me of stealing it. Then she called me a hippie freak (I don't even
have long hair) and told me she saw me pick up the stone from a yard.
She went on to tell me that her part of the neighborhood did not like strangers
poking around. She also mentioned that she heard about us "meteor
people" on the news and knew we were up to no good. A small crowd
was beginning to gather so I walked quickly back to the car. Our
group, now consisting of four members decided it was time to go somewhere
else to search so we left. We had to drive by her house on the way
out and the next thing she did was chase us in her car. It took about
20 blocks and three turns to shake her. I am sure she wrote down
our license plate number and reported the supposed theft to the police.
We were given permission by the city to check the areas between the sidewalks
and curbs.That night
somebody was ran over by a car three times in front of our hotel.
We saw all the police cars and ambulances but did not know what had happened
until the next morning when we found out the person had been killed.See
next posting for part IIAll

 Hi Bob, Norbert and List,

go back to June of last year when I first noticed a questionable meteorite
show up on eBay. Here's the message I sent to Bob Verish about it:

 From: Matson, Robert
 Sent: Thursday, June 06, 2002 6:23 PM
To: 'Bob Verish - home'; 'Bob Verish - work'
 Subject: Mohave meteorwrong?

 Hi Bob,

This has just shown up on eBay:

 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2110888286

Large, 14-lb Mohave meteorite. Seller is from Chico, so he probably
means Mojave. The price is absurd, and the seller has no feedback, so
something smells fishy. From the pictures, it might actually be a
meteorite -- it certainly looks better than most meteorwrongs on eBay.
But practically no data is provided other than the mass. --Rob

 - - - - -

 Bob promptly replied:

Weighs approximately 6272g/14 lbs. And its approximate dimensions
  are 5.75, 4, 3.5/14.5 cm, 10cm, 13.5

 Hi Rob,

 Thanks for the heads-up.

Is my math wrong, or does this specific gravity look like it is within
the range for most chondritic meteorites?

Check out my version of his images (see attachments)

 Bob V.
 - - - - - -

Bob later added: I meant to add on the previous message -
that I think this is another chunk of Sulfide-rich slag!
(take a look at the corners where a bright interior is exposed;-)
I wouldn't be surprised in the least, if it is... --Bob V.

Since the auction is long since over, the links to the images are
gone, *BUT* I just found I do still have Bob's versions of his
images. With Bob's permission, I'll post them to my webspace
and provide the links here if anyone is curious.

A day later, Norbert Classen noticed the auction and posted this
message to the Meteorite Collectors Association list:

 Hi there,

Did you see this neat MW from the Mohave desert? Don't forget,
it's Very Rare! Great Value at $21,280. Okay, some people might
think that $3.40/g is a reasonable price for something that might
be a meteorite AND from the US - but I really doubt that this is
the real thing. What do you think?

 Ebay Item # 2110888286
 Best,

 IMCA #7606

 - - - -

I replied to Norbert and the list:

I noticed this auction yesterday, and being keenly interested in any
meteorite finds from California (misspelling of Mojave notwithstanding),
I floated it by Bob Verish to get his thoughts. It doesn't look like
hematite or magnetite, but then again the seller doesn't mention
magnetism. Bob did some photo enhancement of his images to
get a better look at what appeared to be some specular spots on
the rock surface -- spots which look not unlike some of the roasted
sulfide slags we've been talking about recently.

A rough computation of the specific gravity suggests that the stone
is indeed in the range of most chondrites (high 3's to low 4's) -- the
density is too low to be an iron meteorite. I ~have~ found chondrites
which have weathered exteriors that look a lot like this stone, but
the high price, minimal information, and the lack of a history for
the seller smells bad to me... --Rob

Leaving no stone unturned (sorry, couldn't resist!), I sent the
 following message to the seller:

Based on the images in your auction, it is difficult to say whether
your stone is meteoritic or not. If you haven't cut into it or
ground down a corner, it is probably premature to call it a meteorite.

Your auction could use some more detail, particularly given the price
you're asking for it. For example, where was it found; when was it
found; is it magnetic; how do you know it is a meteorite, etc. I
have discovered many meteorites in California, and have an extensive
 database of information for all

 An Aerolite Liar

 Correspondence of The Landmark.

This statement appeared in a Washington, Pa., dispatch of May 27:
After months of search Professor Jonathan Emerick, of William and Mary
College, has discovered the aerolite which fell in Washington county
September 14, 1885. It was found imbedded deep in soil, on Frederick
Miller's farm, two miles north of Claysville. Professor Emerick says it is
the largest aeroliste on record and weighs fully 200 tons. Its compostion
is chromium, nickel, alumnium, copper, magnesium and tin. A reply was
received from Postermaster Scott stating that the report is a canard, no
 such aerolite having fallen.
There seems to be some person in the associated press who makes it his
business or pastime to invent aerolite discoveries, for it has been kept up
for a number of years. The first instance I can now recall was the alleged
fall near Fort Worth, Texas, of an aerolite a mile in width. When I read
the press dispatch I telegraphed to Fort Worth and ascertained that the
statement was a lie out of the whole cloth. Then, in 1878, there came a
dispath from some place in Arkansas, stating that an aerolite had fallen
there and killed a farmer in his bed. I investigated that statement and
found it was false. Again, in 1882, it was reported in a press dispatch
that an aerolite as large as a hogshead had fallen in Georgia. I made
diligent inquiries only to learn there was no truth in the report. Two
months ago a press dispath from Washington stated that an aerolite had
fallen in that city. It only proved that the liar had got around in the
direction. there canards have cost some expense for correspondence and
telegraphy, and the friend should be killed.

I am very pleased to tell you that you have accomplished the unexpected.

Well, Dr. Korotev has taken notice of at least FIVE ( there may be more) of your
specimens (including ones you keep recycling on the LIST such as 'green man

In the same order, the specimens are listed below on Dr Korotev's Site:

M Yousef,
I know how you feel.
I hate it when someone says they are going to do something and then they
act like they never said it!
It is very annoying!
Do you remember this: Dear Dave and List; Sorry if my posts are
irritating you so much; but I dont see why!!! I promise I will not post
anything about my METEORITES until I get them certified.?
(Remember? And that was a promise! How do you view a person that does

As far as I know I am not breaching any list rules, and there are many list

missles on you. And why dont you reply off-list if you have such irrelevant
comments, I believe you are breaking the rules Matteo!

M Yousef, if you wish to pull out the rules, I think you'll find that
Matteo is not breaking them. As part of the LIST, Matteo is only
responding to the questions you ask. It is unfortunate that you
disagree with him. You would do well to reconsider the opinion of a
highly experienced meteorite dealer. Oh yea, the rules say 1.Posts need
to relate -in some way- to meteorites. Technically you have breached
the rules, since you are the ONLY one who considers your rocks
meteorites. Not that a person can't ask about a suspect meteorite but
you are starting to recirculate them. ( Not to mention that you have the
world's largest collection of wrongs )

  Even people who are
sending me useful comments most of them are replying to my email only, not
to the list. When you want to reply, and I hope you will not, click on

I'm glad persons are being helpful.
Perhaps, you should have followed your own advice and should have sent
this to Matteo instead of to the LIST?

Please, please, please block my email; better for me and you and the list.
I said it many times; people who are irritated because of my post they can
block me and I will be very happy.

M Yousef, A more considerate approach would be to email only the few
who have been helpful to you or show interest and leave the rest of LIST
members as you found them. Would that not be the kind thing to do?
That way NO ONE is irritated by your mania.

I dont have to act like you Matteo. Please stop it, I am sure
you are already a mature man; this is not good what you are doing.

I'm glad to hear that you wish people to act in an adult manner.
You made the following statement about a year ago:

Please look at the pictures of this nice brecciated lunar meteorite

compare the pictures below to Asuka-881757 and

a way you helped me alot by refusing whatever I post; this gave me
more enthusiasm to look for undefeatable
  proofs. RegardsMohamed

I wish we could be even more helpful by refuting all your posts, but
there is that slim possibility that a meteorite will accidently drop
into your bucket while you are outside.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Cleaning

Mike Groetz [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sat, 13 Jan 2001 22:16:14 -0500

Hello-
I am new to the hobby of meteorite collecting and am very excited
about it. Even though by no means am I familiar with chemistry, I made a

discovery that I am very pleased with and wanted to share with you-
Recently I purchased a DHOFAR H4/5 meteorite weighing about 36 grams.

The photo I purchased from showed a small amount of white caliche
(calcium carbonate) on the corners of the meteorite. This is supposed to

be frequently found on meteorites from desert climates. I have to admit
that when I received it I was a little disappointed in that the white
was all over the backside not seen in the photo.
From what I have read, this can be removed with a fairly strong
sulfuric acid. But I have no idea where to find it.
OK- don't laugh. While cleaning the bathroom, I was using an over the

counter product called The Works that is advertised for removal of
rust stains and hard water build up. I know this stuff is fairly strong
(it contains phosphoric acid) and all at once I wondered what it would
do to the caliche on my meteorite.
So I got up the courage and put the meteorite in a small cup and
covered it with the cleaner. Immediately the white caliche started
bubbling and boiling away from the meteorite. After a few minutes, it
seemed to slow, so I took an old toothbrush and lightly scrubbed the
meteorite and put it back in the cleaner. Again, the white caliche was
bubbling away and I could see fine particles of the caliche coming off.
After about 30 minutes and a few gentle scrubbings, the meteorite was

totally clean of the white. I rinsed it in water and lightly paper
toweled it dry. Then to insure total drying, I sprayed it with Albany
brake parts cleaner (a combination of Heptane and Toluene) that is
advertised to clean and dry quickly with no residue. Within seconds,
the meteorite was dry and really looked great and natural. This was now
the meteorite I wanted.
The cleaning did not change any of the original light brown
coloration or the partial blackened crust. It is free of the caliche.
I know this was not professional, but for me, I am really pleased and

wanted to share it with all of you.

Mike

Hi Mike,

I use lime-a-way on my keepers. Removes the caliche and doesn't harm the

stone as far as I can tell.

I think The Works is what the kids in my neighborhood use for bombs.
I'm
not exactly sure how they do it, shredded aluminum foil I think. Sure

Ken, I think you have some excellent, new candidates
 for your web page.
Identification hinges on whether those light-colored
grains on the exterior are quartz. Because the cut
surface is so well-polished in these images, it will
have to be disregarded for identification purposes,
since magnetite grains are nearly identical in
appearance to metal grains when they are this highly
 polished.

I find GBs to be easier to identify when the cut
surface isn't polished (the chondrules are easier to
 see, as well).

Fred, sorry I wasn't able to join you guys out at GB.

(Yes, they were supposedly undergoing classification back then!
I wonder what ever happened to the top secret lunar expert who was

The site existed long before he approached the LIST.
No, he is real, alive , and living in meteorite country.
I just hope he accepts Mark Bostick's generous offer and
allows real meteorites to fall in his possession!
Perhaps THEN he will look for real meteorites and hopefully find some!
Otherwise, I fear his desperate HEART will continue to mislead his

they won't mind on this one. When I got home from work tonighting I had a
letter from the museum in Evansville, IN (my old hometown from a month or so
ago) thanking me for letting them borrow some meteorites for a display and
an email from a reporter from Financial Times asking about meteorites. I
know many of us are involved in educating the public and/or will loan out
pieces of our collection from time to time and I think such actions are
absolutely wonderful!!! An idea that I thought of tonight is creating a new
section on the IMCA website that will basically list members that would be
happy to talk to the public about meteorites (whether it be a school, group,
or possibly even news media) or loan pieces from your collection to
libraries or museums. Included with that would be the corner of the world
that you would be willing to visit to speak or deliver your precious rocks.
Such an idea, if it works the way I'm envisioning, could be invaluable in
educating the public about meteorites. Imagine how meteorites Ninninger
could have found if he was part of a team of people working together around
the world talking to non-meteorite enthusiasts about the wonders that
occasionaly fall from the sky! Also, this could serve as a way to help
distribute information to the public by local residents.

 Dear Listees;
As you have recently seen on the list, there is always someone needing
more information on meteorwrong and meteorite identification. I have
just taken some of my meteorites (meager small things that they are) and
some of my beautifully classic meteorwrongs (massive magnetite, 3 pound
steam locomotive clinkers, ironized sandstone nodules) and some neat
books, Cosmos by Sagan, Rocks From Space, O. Richard Norton, Bob Haag's
Catalogue of Meteorites and put them in a very nice display case at the
local library. Of the 30 or so rocks in the case, 8 are meteorites, the
rest are great examples of close-to-be examples of meteorites. The
small contest is to guess the correct number of real meteorites. Prize
is a small slice of Gibeon.
I will be speaking this coming Tuesday evening at the library about
meteorites and even identifying samples that are brought in.
The two local newspapers will be running feature articles and even a
 photo or two.
For all of you out there in meteorite land, there is a great deal of
inter satisfaction related to giving back to one's community by doing
things like this little show and tell display and public meeting. I
encourage all who are looking for something to do this winter to get
involved...and maybe get a shot at brokering a new meteorite find, or
helping out with a new strewnfield documentation...or just letting
adults act like kids when they get to hold a real meteorite.
It is great fun, and kids have eyes as big as grapefruits when they hold
a real meteorite in their hands. Try your favorite library. I spent
forty-five minutes and have a better looking and more functional display
than the traveling NASA display presently at the same library.
Their flier says Meteorites are magnetic So, I have a nice piece of
lodestone with some paper clips on it to confuse those lucky meteorite
guessers, lots of fun for all.
Very best, 71 degrees presently, and clear in Tucson

That was when he posted his little tirade. (Dec-19-02 at 07:49:38 PST).
He should have been very happy to have greatly exceeded his $100.00 reserve
to $247.50, Right?
But he was very upset, i really think that this will be the last thing i
sell on here (the first to).
He probably blames the 'meteorite experts' for the fact that no one bid even
though he got a ton of emails.

However, it is one thing to give someone benefit of the doubt.
It is another to let them repeatedly lie to you and others, hoping it might
be true.
Meteorites do not blow up and burn down barns.
Neither are they hot for three weeks.
But you might say, He's just repeating the story.
Even if you know nothing about meteorites, when the seller says, if you
collect this stuff, and just have to have it,
and cant wait till the auctions over, ill be happy to review cash offers sent
via e mail.
This is a wake up call saying that the seller is willing to cheat eBay out of
it's money, how far will he go to cheat you?
Watch the man behind the curtain..
The auction ended today (actually yesterday, as it is past midnight as I
write)
Not only does the bidder who also lives in Sacramento instantly have the
'meteorite'
but conveniently leaves the seller this feedback:
picked up.SUPER NICE PIECE.authentic for sure!..hope to do business again!
Well, you may say, he could have picked it up and he could have left
feedback the SAME day since they live in the same town!
Yes, But look at the time the auction ended (Dec-19-02 15:38:33 PST) and the
time he posted feedback
(Dec-19-02 15:43:17 PST). So he had less than 5 minutes to get the goods,
exchange money, return home, verify that it is a meteorite and post his
feedback. But, you say, the only way he could do that is if he lived in the
SAME HOUSE!: Yes, you have figured it out!
It is not what he says, as much as what he does!
This guy was not only dishonest from the very start, but also not very
bright!
His story and his 'meteorite' are as true or are as deceptive as his actions.

Now eBay will get its' fee and the seller/bidder got what he deserved!.
Well done!
(Perhaps it would be nice if someone sent him a congratulatory message for
selling his 'meteorite')
But then again it may be nicer to leave well enough alone!
Best to all,
Ken Newton

First, for any of you that are still interested at all, you should check
 back on the auction

 'handcannon444'
to become highly irritable. Turns out that someone has threatened to
 report him to the
METEORITE POLICE and he sure as heck ain't taking kindly to those

HandCannon has added an addendum to the auction webpage that you really
 need to read.
I won't post it here for fear of lawsuits and/or 44mag bullets flying my

Second, after posting my letter last night, I layed down in bed and
began to think on it some
more. I got to thinking about the picture of the 'object' once again and

another 'blown up' view of it. The surface of the object has a fairly
'ratty' look to it. So, if
you would, bear with me through this scenario...

 Picture this in your mind...

their meager crops and sit on the front porch in their rockers on Sunday
 afternoons, resting

 radios come evening.
And they would wonder how their brethren were subsisting in the 'dust

had gripped the mid-west states; wonder they would, of course, at least
 about the brethren
that hadn't already packed up and moved to California, some of them
 stopping to look for
work at Grandpa's farm. These were the days that were some 30 years

Greetings,

Talk about a set-up, poor Dr. Nestell didn't see it coming...
My favorite: '“This guy sounds like a real nut case. I’ll bet
he’s one of those guys who’s out to make a lot of problems for other people,”
Nestell said'
The funniest: "DeRusse alleges that during the process, geology professor
Merlynd Nestell handled samples and questioned their authenticity. DeRusse
said the technicians assisting him were embarrassed and puzzled by the
professor’s behavior. "
Amazed by it all,

[meteorite-list] [Fwd: Analysis Report]rarest meteorite ever

2002-11-07 Thread magellon
Greetings all,
I just got this answer to my email to Mr. Rahman.
The part that says,
I by no means claim myself an authority in this area, however tried my
best to educate myself and did a limited research in this area to come
up with a very honest analysis report, to the best of my knowledge.
is scary from someone handing out professional analyses.

---BeginMessage---

Dear Mr. Newton,

I read your e-mail with interest and will try to answer your questions
with complete honesty and to the best of my knowledge.

Answers:
-There is no question that this could be a forgery. I have personally
done the analysis and as far as the portion described on that web site
which is in exact reference to my report is truly genuine. The additional
info about that Meteorite (beyond the verdict of my report, if any) might
be as a result of other peoples research.
-This is the first time I personally have studied and analyze this kind
of a sample and while I by no means claim myself an authority in this
area, however tried my best to educate myself and did a limited research
in this area to come up with a very honest analysis report, to the best
of my knowledge.
- I am not aware of any such thing that would give kind of a
certification to UCF to classify meteorites.

I hope you would have got answers of your questions but I would love to
hear more from you or from other more experienced people from this area
and I would like to leave this session open for further discussion. I
hope I will learn more this way.

Please feel free to e-mail me should you have further inquiries in this
regard or if you think I can help in any other way.

Sincerely,
Zia

Cemetery Workman Digs Up One Buried for Twelve Years
Special to The New York Times
RAHWAY, N.J., April 18. - John Godfray, in excavating
for a monument today in Hazlewood Cemetery, dug up a meteor fragment weighing
25 pounds. It seemed to be composed of fused minerals, glass, stone and
steel. There is a mixture of vari-colored stones intermingled through the
otherwise gray mass.
Tweleve years ago Keron Kiernan, keeper of the cemetary,
while at work one afternoon, heard a whistle, like escaping steam, coming
through the clouds overhead. Then came a bright light, an oder of sulpher
filled the air, and about fifty feet from where he stood a missile buried
itself in the ground scorching the grass about and melting the gravel where
it fell. The opening showed the object to have buried twelve feet deep.
Since then it has gradually worked to the surface.

Hello,

Please permit me to introduce myself to you. I am
Mr. Umar Abbas, the executive Director of A.G. NISAMA LIMITED. A rough
gemstone supplying industry.

I will like to have more information regarding Nigerian
meteorites. I have come across several individuals that are in possession
of the stone called meteorite, which is referred over here as “thunder
stone”.

I will like to know the real fact about this stone.
I trade primarily in gemstones, but I wouldn’t mind if I could find my
way through the meteorite business.

I received several enquiries regarding this stone,
most especially the Hadeja meteorite, but being a novice in the field;
I find it difficult to give them the correct information.

My problems here is: how to identify the real meteorite,
and where would I get a buyer.

I will also like to know if meteorites have other
names apart the categorical name “Meteorite” If the answer to the above
is yes, then does one class of meteorite have more value than the other?

When and where can a meteorite be found?

I will be very grateful if I can find someone who
can guide me through, I will also create a page in my website www.agnisama.com
for the meteorite.

My interest in becoming a meteorite collector is always
in the high side.

Your early response would be highly appreciated.

Thank you for your kind assistance and co-operation.

Sincere regards

Umar Abbas

[meteorite-list] Mystery Sighting

2002-09-24 Thread magellon

Greetings All,
What I am about to share with you is a daytime 'meteor' sighting by
a credible witness.
The sighting itself is well, "unusual" to say the least.
However, I take the possibility of finding a new meteorite very serious.
What I feel may be 'strange' in this narration, may be 'rooted
in truth'
to someone more experienced.
I would appreciate any feedback that may lead to solving this
mystery sighting or at least arriving at a reasonable conclusion.

look like volcanic lava. Perhaps a piece recently removed from someone's
