Most chondrites You can put to water for a shorter moment (seweral minutes)
without problem. Especially stable sahara meteorites or weathered stuff like
Yours where You can't make it worse. Be aware of doing this with fresh
material like Benguerir or rusty crap like Ghubara.

If You must use water, f.e. for cutting or polishing proces, then put wet
samples immediatelly to pure alcohol for a short moment and then heat them
carefully. If You put them wet to heating place then hot water in meteorite
can start killing iron inside before hot air will remove water. It is
especially dangerous in porous meteorites.

water --- alcohol --- heating
and everything will be OK

 Gary,

An ultrasonic cleaner can be a very useful tool, and not just for
meteorites. Jewelry can be cleaned, but one must exercise care as not all
gems should be cleaned ultrasonically. Many other things can be cleaned as
well. I use mine for mineral specimen cleaning. Those little crevices
between quartz crystals in a cluster can be a bear to clean. I have cleaned
many geode interiors with it as well.

You tend to get what you pay for. Although the cheapie jewelry cleaners can
do a satisfactory job as long as you don't use it too heavily. (IMHO)

 Good luck!

Thanks for your advice Marcin. It is very weathered and I will be cutting some
of the
larger specimens to see what is inside. If they are metal poor I may get
lucky.

Thanks again,

Gary

But if this material is weathered L chondrites then I think its too
much work to clean some crap. It will be better to cut them in half or make
small window and good polish, becouse usually weathered crap chondrites can
 be interesting inside.
This way I have found 150g of primitive achondrite. This specimen was the
worst looking from whole 10kg I get.

Re: [meteorite-list] Cleaning Chondrites

2007-01-20 Thread tett
Pure Alcohol is best. I use water free rubbing alcohol from the drug store.
Be careful and don't breath too much in or get too much on your skin. First
dry brush as much as possible.

Some low W0 or W1 chondrite slices can be further cleaned with sulphuric
acid. Now you need to be really careful. I use navel jelly in order to
remove rust stains. I have left stuff in for an hour with great results and
Zag especially cleans well. With these acids you must know what you are
doing so if you are not sure ask for help from someone who knows how to
handle these chemicals.

Once I forgot a specimen for a few days. Fusion crust completely eaten
away. ;)

Cheers,

tett

[meteorite-list] cleaning chondrites

2004-01-05 Thread Stephen McMann

Dear List,
What is currently the best method for removing fingerprints (with theiracids and chloride ions) from chondrites, using readily available material? While I don't usually handle my chondrites with bare fingers, they have all passed through long chains of custody before I bought them, and it would be sad to watch oxide stains spreading through the matrix and black fusion crusts turning brown.
Also, does anyone ever use VCI paper with their chondrites?Am I currect in assuming that it may retard oxidation of metal that is exposed to the air?
Sincerely,
Stephen McMann
