2013-03-05 Thread Shawn Alan
Hello Listers

I was able to locate 2 Chelyabinsk documentaries that cover the Russian fall on
Feb 15. If you like,
I can send you an invite to my dropbox account and you be able watch them from
there on the Internet streaming,
or can down load them.

The first documentary is by BBC-Horizon series,Truth about Meteors and its
about 55min and covers a broad
range of topics about the Russian fall and other falls that relate to the
Chelyabinsk fall.

The second video, Meteor Strike from Space has have more actual footage, people
in the field searching for the meteorites,
and covers other fall with similar circumstances.

Please email me off the list with your email and ill invite you to my drop box
where you
be able to view and or down load the two videos, and might I add, you need to
watch them
both :)

Not guilty!

It was 1.2 AU away from the Earth at the time--nice try! There are,
however other C-type NEOs that are around and could keep our supply up.

By the way, 13 of the 20 largest asteroids in the Main Belt are either
C-type or B-type and I think that all of them have the spectral signature
of hydrated silicates and make up something like 45% of the mass of the
entire asteroid belt (Ceres itself is 1/3 of the entire mass of the
asteroid belt). So lots of potential sources for CM meteorites, though I
think that 10 Hygiea is the best candidate at the moment (spectrum,
location, etc.).

 Hi Again:

of Vesta. There are dark areas on Vesta that seem to be composed of
carbonaceous chondritic material (based again on albedo and spectrum). I
do not know all of the details (missed some of the papers at the Lunar
 and
Planetary Science Conference), but my impression is that the dark
 material
did have the spectral signature of material altered by water, implying
that Vesta has been hit over time by C-class asteroids. This is
 consistent
with what Alan is saying about clasts in howardites (which a thought to
 come from Vesta).

To answer your question, Mike, once you alter (hydrate) the silicate
material and make a phyllosilicate, it is not that easy to get rid of

You just needed temperatures low enough when the asteroids formed for
water to condense out, probably the middle of the present asteroid belt.

CM chondrites are also ubiquitous. The most abundant foreign
component of the lunar soil is chemically similar to CM chondrites.
If i recall, many fireballs also seem to be CM like, although other
list members would be better able to address this point. More CM
chondrites would be in our meteorite collections if they weren't so
friable. There are also many CM clasts in meteorite breccias, both
ordinary chondrite regolith breccias like Abbott, Plainview, Dimmitt
and Fayetteville, and howardites such as Kapoeta. This ubiquity
mandates a reliable local source, i.e., not a comet but an asteroid.
Some of the clasts in ordinary chondrites are unshocked, meaning that
they came in at low relative velocities, also very un-comet like. As
the asteroid guys say, the CM chondrites are probably from some types
of C asteroids located at the outer reaches of the main belt; at those
places ambient temperatures are low and volatiles are more likely to
remain on the parent body. That is why CMs contain about 9 wt.% water
(within phyllosilicates) and CI chondrites contain appreciably more.

 Hi List,

This is great stuff. Thanks to Alan and Larry for enlightening us on
 this.

There has been some talk of the volatiles content of CM meteorites.
So, is it safe to assume that CM meteorites also originate from the

 where solar effects are minimized?

Hello list members,

Here's an earth-view movie starring the big dipper for those who'd
like to see an accurate picture of the starry sky (less supernovae) for
over two hundred thousand years:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6618803/bd100c.avi

(88 MB)

Most list members probably don't have software that can do this, and
watching how the sky changes over such a long time period can have a
very humbling and soothing effect.

So ... Here's an accurate full color movie starting over 101,000 years
ago to 106,000 years way into the future to watch how the big dipper
(the Plough, el arado) evolves in all of its glory. You can watch all
of the stars around it like luminescent specks of plankton in the
celestial sea flocking around, some which can be speedy, appreciate how
change is in the air always...

It is a big file (over 200,000 years!), suggest you full-screen it so
you can read the years before or after the present in the lower left
corner.

Also, settle back into your Captain's chair on your starship; amazing
the tools we have available today at our finger tips. If you pause the
video at any point you can have the frame of what the big dipper looks
like at that point in time of interest.

All the while I was thinking how likely with all the action going on,
that particles and fragments of foreign stars could make it here.

Kindest wishes
Doug

PS I'm not sure that Starry Night or any of the better sky map
softwares have useful, decent animations of the evolution over such
large times of stars or whatever groupings of them.

No apology necessary! I was just confused.

Yes, I know that some programs let you watch the evolution of
asterisms.
But nobody should be surprised if their particular star mapping program
has short enough time limits to not allow for this.

Abstract

This paper reviews the current archaeological and palaeo-environmental
evidence from the Younger Dryas period on the Northwest Coast of North
America.
Sea level histories are region-specific, ranging from 100 m lower to
150 m higher than modern at ca. 12,200 cal BP, the mid-point of the
Younger Dryas.
Palaeo-environmental evidence shows temperature decrease across the
study area, but in some regions this is accompanied by greater
precipitation and glacial advance whereas in other conditions were
drier.
Terrestrial vegetation reflects this variability, with northern areas
in particular showing evidence for expansion of herb and shrub tundra
and southern areas marked by increased mountain hemlock and other
species.
Marine, intertidal and terrestrial fauna indicate productive
ecosystems, with some sub-regional changes, such as extirpation of
deer and bison, perhaps associated with the Younger Dryas onset.
Stable isotope analysis of bear remains show these species, which are
a good ecological analogue for humans, exploited both marine and
terrestrial resources.
Despite patchy and dynamic marine and terrestrial environments, these
results suggest a challenging, yet viable environment for humans.
Archaeological evidence for Younger Dryas human occupation is
currently limited to six sites, of which four are associated with
karst caves.
The earliest of these are in Haida Gwaii, where bear hunting is dated
to at least 12,650 cal BP, during the heart of the Younger Dryas
interval.
Other sites in southeast Alaska and in the Fraser River lowlands date
to around 12,100 cal BP.
In Puget Sound, the presence of ca. 13,000 cal BP Clovis surface
collections, and the emerging data from the pre-Clovis Ayer Pond bison
butchery site, suggest pre-Younger Dryas occupation.
The Northwest Coast was open to population movement from both the
north and south in the poorly known interval before the Younger Dryas,
when conditions may have been more moderate and stable.
The sub-regional variation and the scale of environmental change in
the Younger Dryas, especially sea level fluctuation, makes discovery
of Pleistocene archaeological sites challenging.
The Younger Dryas may therefore be seen as something of a worst-case
scenario for both the human occupation and the archaeological
investigation of the Northwest Coast.

Abstract

Global climate change associated with the onset of the Younger Dryas
chronozone affected different regions of the northern hemisphere in
different ways.
In the Great Basin of western North America, the effect was positive
for human populations.
Relatively cool temperatures causing effectively wetter conditions
filled some pluvial basins with shallow but permanent lakes and other
basins with well-watered marshes or meadows.
Vegetation communities dominated by sagebrush and grasses promoted
healthy and diverse animal populations.
Ten archaeological sites from the region have been dated to the
Younger Dryas chronozone.
Evidence from these sites indicates that Paleoindians with skull
shapes and mitochondrial DNA similar to modern western North American
Indians occupied the region.

Never mind - the light bulb on my shoulders and brightened up. I said
we would find it written in stone and you said no Trojans were known.
You meant that there is no guarantee we'll find anything there without
bias, right, but my premise assumes that material is there.

Yup, but as missions go, I think it is just about the best risk out
there, and certainly among the cheapest. Besides, a mission there could
serve a dual purpose to evaluate the region for colonization, staging
or to otherwise utilize its unique attributes. After 3.5 billion years
I figure no matter how much the cometary brooms and things have whisked
it out, there is bound to be plenty of dirt behind the refrigerator.

Kindest wishes and thanks

Hi Richard,

I think I missed more than that - so what did you mean in the original
post? That a mission there would be a good idea to make new
discoveries? I still don't get it, then, and am very interested in what
you say.

Hi Richard,

Come on ol' friend, even 2500 years ago Anaxagoras deduced:

Under the stars are the Sun and Moon, and also certain bodies which
revolve

with them, but are invisible to us.

and we've observed enough meteorites to vindicate him!

The invisible he was talking about refers to them being too small to
have
enough light to reflect to be seen. What is the median threshold
resolution we

are talking about nowadays (in mass or diameter) at that distance?

Perhaps the points are not a pocket full of horses, but Chincoteague
Ponies,
some used, would be a coupe. Regardless, towing an asteroid back to
earth wasn't
what I had in mind at all. Look, we've even sent Stardust to play
tennis with
comets, in hope of getting some micron sized particles, while ignoring
the
voluminous information guaranteed to be on the shelves of these
libration

libraries, not in mass, but in rubble and dust, a page at a time and
conveniently located.

Best wishes
Doug

You want to go the the nearer Lagrangian Points in plain space between
the Earth
and Moon. That is where the most fascinating stuff is to be found,
written in

unaltered stone the genesis of the Moon and plenty more debris to keep
scientists and collectors busy and overworked for the nex 10,000 years!

[meteorite-list] 2 Newly Approved Falls : Kemer (Turkey) 2008 and Mason Gully (Aus) 2010

2011-05-11 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Listees and Fall Collectors,

For those keeping score at home, two newly approved falls have been
added to the Met Bulletin. I don't recall either of these fall events
generating much chatter, but here are they are nonethless, and adding
to last year's total of four (which is still awaiting approvals on
Breja and Kosice to make six.)

Kemer - http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=53654

Mason Gully - http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=53653

I have added them to my Recent Meteorite Falls page -
http://www.galactic-stone.com/pages/falls

Notes - Kemer fell in the same month as Daule, less than 3 weeks
apart. Kemer is the first witnessed fall of an L4 in the 21st
century.

Mason Gully fell exactly one day before Mifflin.

Best regards,

MikeG

Hello all,

Dave, In response to your comment.

If you own the property, you have no obligation to explain why you
don't want someone on your property and you sure don't have to justify
or validate any reason if you decide to provide more than a NO!
answer. ..I agree that conversation is useful, but can you also see that
pushing the envelope and pressing soneone for a reason and not to say
that you would actually do this, but potentially argue the validity of
the reason would surely sour any land owner...

-

I agree you should respect the landowners wishes, but should everyone
take the first NO for the final answer and walk away out of respect
for their decision and leave it at that? If that were the case half the
businesses in the world would fail. It's not just about respect, this is
a matter of conscience and if it matters to you so much then simply
don't ask the question. To others it isn't as BIG an issue to ask
questions of anyone regardless of stature. No disrespect intended. Just
my opinion.

Jason, in response to your comment.

..If you somehow managed to spend $10,000 on your trip, well - you
would only need to sell 150 grams of material at your price of $65/g to
cover your costs. You've asked some pretty 'off' questions, so here are
a few of my own - how much of your stock have you sold, and how much
money have you made?..

I would say you are a smart kid and I'm impressed with your enthusiasm.
However I disagree with your ideas on business. It's not just about
simply recovering costs. It's about making a living and growing the
business at the same time. And if I may be so bold and use the word
profit, which seems to be the bad word in this whole ethics debate. If
you ever had to live on your own and run a business at the same time,
and support a family, mortgage, car payments, groceries, and personal
bills you would understand the importance of being able to not only
cover your bills but your business expenses as well as grow your
company. To grow your business a good profit must be made.

In business to charge the highest price a market will bear is directly
related to supply and demand. If a product is plentiful that products
price is naturally lower than if the product in question were less
available. Even so, if the market will support $100/g for a particular
product that price is a fair market price. Don't you have an X-Box
360? You remember how high the cost was when they first came out? Around
$500+ if I remember right. Now you can buy them for around $200 a
decrease of 60%.

That's a fair market price and a good example of a market finding a
natural balance right? My point is when a product is first available
that products price regardless of what it is will be determined by
demand and what people are willing to pay to get it. How many parents
stood in line at the local Wal-Mart and Best Buy to purchase the first
release of the latest toy whether it be an X-Box, PS3, Plasma TV, or
Tickle Me Elmo.

It's reasonable to expect anyone to charge what they feel is a fair
price. It's again is about conscience and perceived fairness. Business
is about profit whether you agree or not. You grow a business by
reinvesting a portion of that profit back into a company, so you need to
have a larger profit to grow a smaller business. Larger companies
needn't have larger profits because they compensate the lower retail
price with buying power that results in lower wholesale costs to them.

Business ethics and meteorite hunting ethics go hand in hand when a
dealer is in the field. He must be respectful of the landowners yet pay
a fair market price. But don't forget he must be able to afford that
price as well. $10/g might be high for someone where $20/g might be a
good price for others.

If the supplier (landowner) believes he or she received a good price and
was treated fairly then that's good for business. If you paid a low
enough price for any given product to in turn sell at a higher price and
make a good profit isn't that good business? I wonder what the margins
were for the X-Box. Costs for businesses are higher at the opening bell.
At the end of the day the free market will find a balance based on
supply and demand.

I ask anyone to fairly and honestly answer this question. If you have
investments in the market (401K etc.) wouldn't you want those
investments to give you the highest return possible? You don't have to
be a businessperson to understand the concept of profit. When investing
in stocks, bonds, CDs, funds, your annual % yield is your profit. If you
have a problem with higher prices don't pay them and wait for the market
to stabilize. It always does.

As for the ethics of hunting on private land. Check local laws. And
never hunt on private land without permission. I

This reminds me of when I was in Park Forest, actually in Steger, IL, 6
years ago this week, where a local man had his rear window of his car knocked
out
by a meteorite. I asked him if he wanted to sell the meteorite, and he made
it plain to me that he would not sell it for ANY price.

Taking him at his word, I dropped the subject and I then asked him if he
might be interested in selling the shattered broken glass from the impact? To
which he said he very well might, and then asked what I would offer him for
it. I delayed in giving him an answer on the spot, and returned to talk with
him a couple of days later, possibly to close the deal for the glass.

When I got back with him, he informed me that he had just sold the meteorite
that day. When I asked for how much, it was something in the neighborhood
of $8 a gram, maybe $350 for the 40 ish gram stone.

Trying not to look too upset, I reminded the guy that he had told me that he
would not be willing to sell it for ANY price. He said Yea, but I had no
idea anyone would pay THAT much for it, I just couldn't say no he told me.

I was too sick to let him know I would have gladly paid him 4 times that
much, maybe even more.

But it was my lesson to learn that just because some people say no it
doesn't always mean no!

Sometimes they fib to start the negotiations at a better spot. Sometimes
they do in fact mean No as was the case with me and the Caldwell, Kansas
stone. Sometimes they just don't know what they are saying no to!

Should I have risked offending the man and had pressed him with a $1,000
offer for his rock? Or at least a $400 offer???

Steve,

You asked: So why do you still think that I think he OWES me an
explanation?

As I stated in my last post, it comes from comments like Often times,
people have very valid objections. Other times, they don't. or Sometimes
they will say they don't want you to hunt because 23 years ago, a fisherman
left a gate open and some cows got out. But usually that isn't a valid
reason for never letting anyone ever come on their land again. Another
comment you made regarding the issue of asking to search a property was:
Granted, people lie. Well, maybe they do, but the point is, so what? It's

their property and they don't need to explain past the answer... No.

When you say things like the above, in the context of trying to get
permission to search a property from a land owner, what is being implied is
that 1) the person owes you an explanation and 2) if the person does give
you a reason, that reason must somehow be validated as being reasonable by
you.

I apologize if I'm reading way too much into this, but I've run into a
similar situation and maybe that's why I'm sensitive to this. I've had
people wanting to buy property from me and they just won't take a simple NO!
for an answer. They too want to ask the question Why won't you sell it to
us. I'm sorry, but I don't owe them or anyone else an explanation. Even
if I did provide an explanation, what then? They try to tell me why I'm
wrong and should sell to them. That to me is being arrogant.

One last item. I did not, nor would I ever say or imply that you were rude
or that your conversations with land owners are contentious or anything like
that. From all accounts, you have a stellar (no pun intended) rep. I thank
you too for your courteous replies.

Dave

Dave,

You said:

I thank you for the detailed explanation, but I still have issue with your
idea that a land owner would owe you an explanation other than No when
asked to search their property.

When I clearly stated in my last post:

Does he have an obligation to tell me why he said no? Of course not. And
did I even imply that he was obligated to? But if you don't ask, often you
don't get an answer.

*

So why do you still think that I think he OWES me an explanation?

I don't think he owes me to let me hunt on his land, but I still ask.

He didn't owe me an explanation, but I still asked for one.

Besides, if someone owes you something, you demand, you don't ask.

I didn't demand anything, I just asked. I wasn't rude. He wasn't rude. He
didn't kick me off his driveway. He didn't even ask me to leave nor did he
end the conversation. We had a short, 3 minute talk, then I left when it
was
evident he didn't care if meteorites would be lost. Maybe if I offered him
$10,000 in exchange for hunting, he might have become interested. Then
again,
if he had a $500,000 crop out

I imagine meteorite hunting is exciting, especially when you are actually in

It was mentioned that there often is a good ole boys network that

Of course, I can understand someone not wanting people on their property.
And that is why it is always good to get permission to hunt, and if that

I had an Aha experience when I was driving with a fellow meteorite hunter
at West a couple of weeks ago as we drove up on a land owner and I stopped,
got out and introduced myself, and asked for permission to hunt on his ground.
The man said quite plainly No. So I asked him Why not? And he could
not (or would not) give me a reason. We talked a little more, when I asked
him if he was planning to look himself, and he said he was too busy to do it
himself. Again, I asked him why I couldn't look.

He did not say I don't want you spooking my cattle. Or I don't want the
liability if you get hurt. Or I don't want you making money off of
something that I would just as soon let rust away.

He didn't offer a good reason or even a bad reason for that matter.

When it was obvious I wasn't going to get permission, I excused myself and
went back to the car to go find another land owner down the road to ask. When
I got in the car, my friend asked me: You know why he doesn't want to let
you hunt don't you? I said No, why? He stated matter of factly: He
didn't want you to find his Marijuana Patch.

Aha!!!

Of course I don't know if that was the real case, but if it was, it made a
lot of sense, and it would explain why he couldn't give me a logical reason on
why he didn't want me on his ground. If he had a $500,000 cash crop growing
out there, only bad could come out of someone wondering around his land.

I am not saying that Sonny and Mike almost stumbled onto a secret garden in
Georgia, or that the judge and other law enforcement personnel might have
been partners in some Southern Mafia where they would want ALL meteorite
hunters to stay out of the ENTIRE county and away from their retirement fund.

I am just saying something seems a little fishy with this story. I am sure
we will never know the full story.

I would guess because it is pretty much taken for granted (here, at least) that
a road that isn't paved and doesn't have signs is a private driveway leading to

Dave,

Were they actually burglars, or were they just knocking on her door asking
to use the phone for their broken down car?

I am sure they were probably burglars. But my point is, just because a
newspaper says something, doesn't make it so. Almost EVERY meteorite story
ever
published has minor if not major flaws in them. And these are not typically
stories where a reporter's bias could be blamed for the bad journalism.
Almost ALL journalism is shotty today. I just don't believe anything in

just because it is in print.

Maybe Sonny and Mike are lucky to only have to pay $2,000. Maybe they were
unlucky to have to pay $2,000. Yes, they might have been shot. I like and

Thanks for the correction Dave. I think I have only seen the phrase Get
the hell out of Dodge in old western movies, usually relating to Dodge City,
Kansas. But arrogant law men are slightly different than judges sitting on a
bench with a stenographer recording every statement. Besides, is Hollywood's
perspective always the way it really happens in life?

Of course, IF Mike and Sonny had already made a plea agreement, or simply
plead guilty (whether they really were guilty or not) throwing themselves at
the mercy of the court, the judge I presume could puff up his chest and say
about anything he wanted.

And, I don't mean to imply that if either of them were arrested again, and
brought before the same judge, that he would not be more strict the second time
around. I don't doubt he would throw the book at them.

My preface was that this story seemed a bit fishy to me, that is all.

Do judges in Georgia run for public election? Re-elect Judge Daniel, he's
tough on space crime! might be a good campaign slogan.

Dave, with all due respect to you, I like to engage people in conversations.
Me doing so with that man had nothing to do with me being arrogant. If
someone has an objection, in sales one learns to flush out those objections.
If
you don't know the objections, then how do you overcome them? Often times,
people have very valid objections. Other times, they don't.

Unless a person comes out with their excuse, or if one asks, it is hard to

Yes, of course, with private property, people don't have to have a reason.
But usually they do have a reason. Unless it is brought out, it is often
hard to rationally talk with someone about a solution.

In West, I was hunting with a group when we got permission to hunt on a guys
land for a couple of days. At the end of the couple of days I asked if we
could keep hunting. The man said No, I told you that you could hunt for 2

him
as to why? A little later he expressed that his wife was nervous with
strangers on the property, and that she had gotten their pistol out and was
keeping it on the table to help with her nerves.

Bingo. The real reason. Not that he wanted to be a jerk and kick us off
after only 2 days, but he had a real reason. And a valid one I might point
out. I understood his situation. I told him that I wish we could hunt more,
but that I appreciated what time he gave us. And I left. No arrogance on
my
part at all. Maybe I could have tried to find a way to reassure him and his

Of course, I can understand someone not wanting people on their
property.
And that is why it is always good to get permission to hunt, and if
that

permission is in writing, all the better.

I had an Aha experience when I was driving with a fellow
meteorite hunter
at West a couple of weeks ago as we drove up on a land owner and I
stopped,
got out and introduced myself, and asked for permission to hunt on
his ground.
The man said quite plainly No. So I asked him Why not? And he
could
not (or would not) give me a reason. We talked a little more, when
I asked
him if he was planning to look himself, and he said he was too busy
to do it

himself. Again, I asked him why I couldn't look.

He did not say I don't want you spooking my cattle. Or I don't
want the

liability if you get hurt. Or I don't want you making money off of
something that I would just as soon let rust away.

He didn't offer a good reason or even a bad reason for that matter.

When it was obvious I wasn't going to get permission, I excused
myself and
went back to the car to go find another land owner down the road to
ask. When
I got in the car, my friend asked me: You know why he doesn't want
to let
you hunt don't you? I said No, why? He stated matter of
factly: He

didn't want you to find his Marijuana Patch.

Aha!!!

Of course I don't know if that was the real case, but if it was, it
made a
lot of sense, and it would explain why he couldn't give me a
logical reason on
why he didn't want me on his ground. If he had a $500,000 cash
crop growing
out there, only bad could come out of someone wondering around his
land.

I am not saying that Sonny and Mike almost stumbled onto a secret
garden in
Georgia, or that the judge and other law enforcement personnel
might have
been partners in some Southern Mafia where they would want ALL
meteorite
hunters to stay out of the ENTIRE county and away from their
retirement fund.

I am just saying something seems a little fishy with this story. I
am sure

we will never know the full story.

ok Darren, I have to minor my previous post

In NY state, when I see a mailbox in front of an unpaved road

USA being a rather new country, most of the roads go to a private
property, I have to admit,
not like in France, and many other countries, where unpaved roads are common
and rarely

private, unless advertised otherwise.
They are very ancient paths going thru fields, landscape, from one village
to the other,

reminiscent of old middle age roads, and most of the time unpaved.

I feel that Mike Miller and Sonny never seriously thought they were on
private property

I don't doubt that Mike and Sonny were on private land without permission,
they have admitted so.

Was there was grounds for an arrest buy an unbiased police men?

Sure.

It was for a court case to decide their guilt, had they wanted to plead Not
Guilty. As I understand, they decided to plead Guilty.

I assume they did this either because they were technically guilty as
charged, or because it was better for them to make such a plea than to take
their
chances and money to try to fight the charges. With the attitude of the judge
to go over the law and to order people out of his county, I think taking the
path of least resistance would have been very attractive to most anyone
found in the same situation.

To claim that such a judge was an objective third party in this case seems
to be a bit of a stretch.

And, not that we can believe the newspaper 100%, but it seemed that part of
the reason the judge was being so easy on them was because the land owner
wasn't wanting to push the issue. Which, coming from a gun toting, burglar
apprehending victim, that shows that maybe even she thought sending them to
jail was too extreme, even if such a jail sentence could have been within the
limits of the fullest extent of the law.

That is just my take.

I am sure they were probably burglars. But my point is, just because a
newspaper says something, doesn't make it so. Almost EVERY meteorite
story ever
published has minor if not major flaws in them. And these are not
typically

stories where a reporter's bias could be blamed for the bad journalism.
Almost ALL journalism is shotty today. I just don't believe anything in

just because it is in print.

Maybe Sonny and Mike are lucky to only have to pay $2,000. Maybe they
were

unlucky to have to pay $2,000. Yes, they might have been shot. I like and
respect Sonny and Mike too. I agree, without asking permission, they did
not

belong there.

The point I was making about the landowner and the burglers was to
illustrate that Sonny and Mike (or anyone in a similar position) doesn't
necessarily know the background or local history of the area and what
suspicions and fears may be present, hence, my follow-on about the
possibility of their getting shot. The bottom line is I think we all agree
that getting permission first in the only way to go.

Thanks for the correction Dave. I think I have only seen the phrase Get

a
bench with a stenographer recording every statement. Besides, is
Hollywood's

perspective always the way it really happens in life?

Of course, IF Mike and Sonny had already made a plea agreement, or simply
plead guilty (whether they really were guilty or not) throwing themselves
at

the mercy of the court, the judge I presume could puff up his chest and say
about anything he wanted.

And, I don't mean to imply that if either of them were arrested again, and
brought before the same judge, that he would not be more strict the second
time

around. I don't doubt he would throw the book at them.

My preface was that this story seemed a bit fishy to me, that is all.

Do judges in Georgia run for public election? Re-elect Judge Daniel, he's
tough on space crime! might be a good campaign slogan.

I've worked with the law enforcement community for 12 years and while the
vast majority are there to serve the public interest, there are those

of the public. In my previous post, I guess I was surprised by the fact that
you appeard to find it unusual for such a comment to be made by a judge.

[meteorite-list] 2 new Nevada meteorites / Cold finds/ Statistics

2008-05-10 Thread wahlperry

Hi,

I recently found two more new Nevada meteorites! Have you ever wondered
how many hours and field work it takes to find a new meteorite? On the
2 new finds I have recorded the time spent in field, driving time and
research time. My own thoughts, buy them on ebay or from a dealer! Just
teasing! There is nothing better than walking up on a new cold find,
versus a find in a known area that may be paired to other finds. The
first new meteorite only took seven days to find, 8 hour days on the
average not counting drive time or over night camping in the area.
Something to mention also, 10 - 12 trips to different areas or old
strewn fields to break up the monotony. Ok , 56 hours not bad for a new
find! Not counting driving time and research time ! One more thing to
mention...(The Bush factor ,fuel prices!). Total time for the first
find around 100 hours . Where there is one meteorite there should be
more. It also depends on how much time you wish to spend in an area
before you move on. I will try to spend a few hours looking for more
pieces with a detector but the true amount of time it takes could be
several days to weeks . My second new find only took 35 minutes to find
once I started walking . Drive time was a killer on this one, many
hours driving to find this one. While driving to another hunting area I
noticed this area from a distance that looked good . You have to
understand all areas look good until you get out there. There are a few
problems including fences, basalt's, closed areas, private land and
roads that look hard packed until you drive on them and your vehicle
sinks to the frame! Talking about barbed wire fences, a friend and I
were hunting out of state when we noticed a dry lake bed that looked
good. We had to climb over a barbed wire fence next to a train track.
After hunting the lake with no luck we decided to head back to the
rental car. We looked for a gate but could not find one,and decided to
climb over the fence. My hunting partner said this was not a good idea
but decided to climb over the fence with a little coaxing. At that
moment a train turned the corner and started blowing it's whistle when
it saw us. I asked my hunting partner if he needed help to get over the
fence and he said no. By this time the train was getting louder and
closer. I decided to get off the tracks. I don't know what was louder
the train whistle or my friends pants tearing on the fence! You had to
be there!

On my second new find, actual hunting time was 35 minutes before
locating the meteorite. I spent 7 additional hours looking for more in
the area plus my driving time. You have to wonder why we do this hobby?
I enjoy the adventure and you never know what the next meteorite might
be! I have posted a few pictures on my web page on the new Nevada
meteorites.

Re: [meteorite-list] 2 new Nevada meteorites / Cold finds/ Statistics

2008-05-10 Thread Moni Waiblinger

Good afternoon all!

Nice finds Sonny!
What a beautiful 'space rock' the 172grams one is!
Gorgeous!

I admit, is is a long haul to find meteorites.
And like you mentioned all the problems one can run into.
The time before last I ripped the inside wall of my tire and had to replace a
tire.
So besides all the costs of gasoline, driving time and sunburn, I had to buy a
new tire.
Luckily I did find a 22gram meteorite and so it was worth all the costs,
but...one to get of ebay would have been cheaper.

The image of the badger is great!
Nevada has quite of few of them.
I remember when I went with Bob V. we encountered several running across the
dirt roads.
Never saw on in California.
And never saw one coming up the ground!
Pretty neat.
That is another plus isn't it, the wild life!

Really exciting times!
Thanks for sharing and good hunting!

With best regards,
Moni

[meteorite-list] 2-23-07 Update on Walter

2007-02-23 Thread Walter Branch
Good evening,
I saw Walter this afternoon. This past week has been rough. Rebekah has
had a virus which kept her out of school 2 1/2 days. Walter had been
tolerating food through the NG tube into his stomach until Tuesday when he
sprang a couple of leaks. They ran dye through the stomach but couldn't
find where the leaks were until late this afternoon. It seems he has an
obstruction in the small intestines. The surgeons will make a decision and
plan of action tomorrow. Walter has been being weaned off the ventilator
and when I left him at 7:00 p.m. he had been off the ventilator and on a
trach collar for 9 hours. ( The trach collar is like someone having an
oxygen tank and the tubing under their nose but his is going into his
throat). His infection is responding to antibiotics but it will be weeks
before it resolves. All in all it was a better Friday than I have had in 4
weeks, but we will have to see what the next few days bring in relation to
the blockage. Please keep us in your prayers. We have loved getting the
cards and emails.

Re: [meteorite-list] #2 Study: Earthlike planets may be common

2006-09-10 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Hi,

The same scientist that published this month the study,
which says that close Jupiters allow terrestrial planets
with lots of water, also published in May, 2006 a study that
says what seems at first to be saying the exact opposite:
http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0605136

This study eliminates terrestrial water-rich worlds only
when the Jupiters orbit between 1.6 AU and 3.5 AU. So
that eliminates such systems (which is most of the extra-
solar planetary systems we've already discovered) as good
candidates for Earth-like water-rich worlds. The two studies
together indicate you can have water-rich Earth-like worlds
with close Jupiters or with far Jupiters, but not with
in-between Jupiters.

   I quote from the abstract:
We present results of 460 N-body simulations of
terrestrial accretion from a disk of Moon- to Mars-sized
planetary embryos. We systematically vary the orbital
semimajor axis of a Jupiter-mass giant planet between
1.6 and 6 AU, and eccentricity between 0 and 0.4.
We find that for Sun-like stars, giant planets inside
roughly 2.5 AU inhibit the growth of 0.3 Earth-mass
planets in the habitable zone. If planets accrete water
from volatile-rich embryos past 2-2.5 AU, then
water-rich habitable planets can only form in systems
with giant planets beyond 3.5 AU. Giant planets with
significant orbital eccentricities inhibit both accretion
and water delivery. The majority of the current sample
of extra-solar giant planets appears unlikely to form
habitable planets.

However nice it is to pin these things down, do we
really need a big computer to tell us if Jupiter orbited the
Sun at, say, the distance of Ceres, our planet Earth simply
wouldn't be here? Didn't we know that already?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Earthlike planets covered with deep oceans that
could

harbor life may be found in as many as a third of solar systems discovered
outside of our own, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.

These solar systems feature gas giants known as Hot Jupiters, which orbit
extremely close to their parent stars -- even closer than Mercury to our
sun,

University of Colorado researcher Sean Raymond said.

The close-orbiting gassy planets may help encourage the formations of
smaller,

rocky, Earthlike planets, they reported in the journal Science.

We now think there is a new class of ocean-covered, and possibly habitable,
planets in solar systems unlike our own, Raymond said in a statement.

The team from Colorado, Penn State University and NASA's Goddard Space
Flight

Center Maryland ran computer simulations of various types of solar systems
forming.

The gas giants may help rocky planets form close to the suns, and may help
pull

in icy bodies that deliver water to the young planets, they found.

These gas giants cause quite a ruckus, Raymond said.

Water is key to life as humans define it.

I think there are definitely habitable planets out there, Raymond said.
But
any life on these planets could be very different from ours. There are a lot
of
evolutionary steps in between the formation of such planets in other systems
and

the presence of life forms looking back at us.

As many as 40 percent of the 200 or so known planets around other stars are
Hot

Jupiters, the researchers said.

[meteorite-list] 2 New Desert Irons - WITH Pictures links

2005-09-09 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members,

I would like to share pictures of two new Sahara Desert irons I brought back
from my last trip. One may be paired to NWA 854 Ziz and weighs 2016 grams
(picture 'desertIron1.jpg'). It is very fresh, flow lines and crust are
visible, along with a bluish hue to the entire specimen.

See here: http://www.lunarrock.com/irons/desertIron1.jpg

The other one, which I was told came from Algeria or Mauritania, is quite
sculptural and stands up by itself. This one has been in the desert longer
but is a great display piece. I do not know what type of iron meteorite this
is and do not plan to cut or even polish a window for a look. This one
weighs 5045 grams (picture 'desertIron2.jpg').

See here: http://www.lunarrock.com/irons/desertIron2.jpg

I will not be cutting either one. Enjoy the pics. Sorry about the first
lost, I accidentally attached the photos instead of providing links.

Best regards,

Greg Hupe

[meteorite-list] 2 grams of Shergotty

2003-04-03 Thread pkmorgan
Matteo and Gregory,
I have a deal for you both.

How about something like this:
Matteo, you wire me $2000 (I'll just hold the piece since it will be going
to Gregory anyway)

Gregory will then wire you $2000 (again, no shipping charge necessary)

Gregory, I will send you $1000 (see no shipping once again).

Looks like I end up with a $1000 dollars out of the deal so maybe Gregory
should just send that to me and save us all some time ;-)

Regards to all,
Phil

Would you be able to buy 200 grams for $600? If

 at $1,000/gram. SERIOUSLY.

 If I have

It's pretty easy to say that you'd sell it for
 $1,000/gram, Matteo, when you
don't have any. By the way, I'LL sell it for $500
 per gram

500/gr. for a historical SNC? And for a Nakhla what
 price you ask?

 but I
 don't have any either. ;-)

[meteorite-list] 2 meteorites I am really looking for

2002-12-23 Thread STEVE ARNOLD
CANYON CITY and HONOLULU meteorites! Does anyone, anywhere know if there are any available? I am purchasing a few very rare piece's this week, but these 2 just allude me. There is nothing on anyone's sites to be found or had. It would be nice if someone out of the ordinary would just come out of the woodwork who just might have some. Oh well, Merry Christmas to all of you, and have a great New year. This is it from this end for this year. I"ll be available off list, But I'm off work till the 6 th.
