Re: [meteorite-list] AD What is wrong with sharing...

2006-12-23 Thread MexicoDoug
Hello Listees,

So far I have NEVER placed a meteorite advertisement on the list in my few
years here. I don't think depending on income from selling is the right
reason to entitle one to either more ads, or more say, any more than I think
one who never offers ads should count more. (Not directed at Mark, it is a
recurring theme I too often get after reading these to ad or not to ad
posts). Keep It Simple, Sherlock, Greg, John, I agree is a nice concept to
apply to ads.

I dare believe that the list is NOT really a commercial forum. Among other
functions, I think of it just as a nice place to meet to discuss meteorites
as well as to discretely exchange or find solace in picking up a few
specimens for whatever magnetism meteorites possess for each of us.

Please permit me to register my opinion that whichever rules and conventions
covering ads stick, that all meteorites and all enthusiasts are equally
welcomed where meteorite ads are concerned. Whether someone wants to offer
the locality of Gold Basin from back-state or Utopia Basin a world away, we
really should keep this simple, fair, and above all, fun for each and every
list member regardless of their budget and experience (Thanks for the
K.I.S.S. reminder, Greg, may I confirm that business schools don't have a
monopoly over that acronym, and that true rocket scientists actually
invented it).

If I should be respectful of the rules and reasonable with conventions, and
some day wish to part with, p. ej., an NWA 869 individual, what's the
problem? It's incredible treasure trove of features is easily could be more
interesting than much of the rare material and more special localities,
why wouldn't everyone respect this? In fact, there is no argument that one
voucher can be more meteorite than another authentic specimen, and the
unsupported my meteorite is better than your meteorite claims are
generally frowned upon...

Let me recklessly equate the list to a chummy bowling league. The gal or
guy who bowls the 87 may be having more fun than those from the over 225
contingent, yet they can all feed each others passion and mutual enjoyment
without thinking to taint the lanes with any exclusive, elitist, or snobby
policies. At heart I think (and hope) that is what all of you dealers
really want, not to mention it is likely good business practice. This isn't
the Sales' Olympics - it's just the friendly meteorite list, right? That's
where everyone interested in meteorites has a great time being part of the
enthusiasm we all share.

My two centavos have long run out, and I don't have any more change
left...maybe I'll contemplate an ad by 2009 to stuff my pockets with a
couple of Zaragoza's ...

Holiday wishes,
Doug

 Greg,
I agree with you whole-heartedly about all of the unproductive, off topic
posts, including my jabs at Ssteve Arnold. There's nothing I can do about
everyone elses behavior but I can change my own. Maybe I'll make a New
Years Resolution to lay off Chicago Ssteve in the coming year. Having said
that, and I said maybe, I have to let you know that most of my
well-intended resolutions usually bite the dust before January 15th.

Safe and Happy Holiday to All. If any of you are traveling or have family
or friends traveling, be prepared for delays. I have a daughter and
son-in-law stuck in the SLC airport. Their flight was supposed to be
early this morning but has been moved back to Sunday afternoon due to the
Denver Airport being shut down. Boy...what a mess!

 Best,

 John

 Hi John and List,

I can appreciate and understand how you feel. I also appreciate your
comment ...Greg - you aren't one of the offenders that annoy me. This
makes me feel better about my once a week AD, but I always try to have
something new each week to include. I will actually be leaning more
towards the Weekly Special opposed to the Weekly Regular ADs in 2007.
I have been very fortunate in the last few years in obtaining rare
meteorites that have been classified so I can start to offer them soon.
It
is more fun to offer new material than the same weekly items like you
said.

On the flip side, as you are insulted by blatant repetitive sales ADs, I
am equally insulted those who constantly trash each other, apologize
endlessly, rant on in cartoon-like lyrics and otherwise waste my time
where I have to delete, delete, delete emails unrelated to meteorites,
but I happily delete, delete, delete...

I appreciate your thoughts and those of other's and try to learn by them.
If constructive criticism is taken appropriately, one can better
themselves and all can be the better for it.

Have a great rest of the year everyone

If all product advertisements began with AD in the subject line,
members could filter them into a separate email folder.

I personally don't worry about such publicity as I accepted it would
happen when I joined the list. Of course, my interest in meteorites is
different (I have never knowingly touched a meteorite nor have any
intention to buy one).

Merry Xmas,

Chris

Greg,
I believe that most list members are like me and enjoy seeing ADs for new
material and new sales. However, I also believe that we (list members) get
tired of seeing the same specimens offered several times a week when the
seller posts reminders like my auctions are ending in two days, my
auctions are ending in one day, my auctions are ending in two
hoursetc. Everyone on this list (with the exception of one person) is
smart enough to make note of some items for sale, if they are interested in
purchasing them, without the repetitive reminds. Personally, I find them
insulting. I hate pushy sales people. I hate the perfume sales girls at
the mall who insists on me trying one of her products for my wife. I hate
the going out of business - this is your LAST chance at these fantastic
items at rock-bottom prices approach. And I really hate the guy who tries
to insult me into buying his products. Obviously you're not smart enough
to recognize a fantastic opportunity when you see on tactic.

I find these tactics insulting at the mall, on the phone, on the TV and on
the Internet. I'm tired of people trying to cram their products down my
throat and trying to get their hands in my wallet. If I want to buy
something, I'm smart enough to find who has it for sale and I'm smart
enough to decide what I'm willing to pay for it. I don't need to be
reminded several times. But, if anyone has some new material or is
offering a truly discounted sale ( 30% to 50% is good...10% is insulting) ,
I'm really happy to take a look. If I get sent more than one
opportunity for the same sale items, I usually send ALL the offers to my
trash bin and make a note to avoid that seller again.

Bottom line is that I don't like people who waste my time and treat me like
I'm not smart enough to navigate through life without their unsolicited
help. This isn't an attack on you Greg - you aren't one of the offenders
that annoy me.

Happy Holidays to Alland Merry Christmas to those who celebrate the event,

John Gwilliam

Hello AD lovers, haters and otherwise,

What is the big deal with AD postings? Some of you jump on some phantom
bandwagon in hate of Ad-posters and the love wagon for those who never sell

bad thing. The more new meteorites discovered and offered for science and
sale alike the better I say!
