Re: [meteorite-list] LONG Posts that give us Arthritis to Scroll though
Hi Doug, Yes, I get the combined version of posts that goes out after so many have accumulated or when Art sends them and sometimes this is several in a day. That is why I mentioned scrolling through all of them and just in general the time and energy and I threw battery life in there just for the heck of it. I'm not that worried about it, but I was thinking of others that have phones that the battery lasts a couple of hours. Still, the old practice of quoting what's relevant is sometimes lost and far more efficient for everyone I think, when possible, so at least I'll try to keep that in mind when participating in some of the whopper threads - also because the archives are probably getting near critical mass and may fragment into an alphabet soup nova. I don't understand the comment about the scrolling and batteries, though. At least on my phone, I can skip or delete messages once I am satisfied I've read as far as I want, without having to go to the end, I never get to the accumulated meteorite-list tags at the bottom and it's never a big deal (though I imagine if you get the daily compendium format it would be a major problem). Other consciencious gestures could include always putting new content at the top of the thread. One of my favorite people always puts their comments at the end and that usually throws me for a loop just as driving on the opposite sice of the road from convention. [meteorite-list] LONG Posts that give us Arthritis to Scroll though
Hello all of you wonderful Meteorite Collectors and those lucky enough to be in Tucson this year, Just a quick request that many have been talking about lately. How about just a Fresh email Post without all the long trailing info of many old posts. Since many of us old timers and new folks read our Email on our phones and are short on time, battery life and Increasingly Bad Vision and those of us who are getting arthritis and want to avoid Carpo-Tunnel, can I please request when everyone sends a post that they leave out all the lengthy portions of many, many OLD previous email posts. It's very time consuming on us all and on our phone batteries and on our wrists and hands, back and shoulders and bodies in general all over to scroll through all the previous posts that many are including in their posts to the list. I'm seeing posts going back over 4 days or more that we don't need to read or scroll through regarding many things, especially the recent etching posts. Most of us understand etching, but when you have a post that includes the past 3-7 email posts no one is reading all the old posts since we've already read it and those that haven't seen them will catch up or can go into the archives to find them. Please, just a friendly request for a Fresh Post and perhaps one short connected previous email post, not the entire thread. This will make everyone much happier and cut down on time and battery life and our bodies. Thanks! ;-) __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] LONG Posts that give us Arthritis to Scroll though
Me too. We all are probably guilty of not reading every email/post that comes out, so it does give you a chance to look back quickly about whats going on with out having togo back to the archive which a BIG PIA!! As an unrepentant luddite, I have never read an email on a phone. Actually, the only things I have ever done on a phone are : talk and very rarely send text messages. The extra hassle (for mobile browsers) caused by multiple quoted emails at the end of a List post never occurred to me. I'll try to remember that from now on. One more thing, I highly recommend this free software if it workes in your mobile device to streamline the timely review of messages - - for skipping, - the choice to delete or not, - the ability to never have to check individual email accounts. http://www.poppeeper.com/ It most certainly will make you feel like a 15 year old keyboardest again with no carpal-tunnel in touch ... List- What bothers me more than the long posts are opening emails that people make a personal reply comment like I like it! or That's a good picture etc, etc. and they COPY THE ENTIRE LIST. Just reply to the SENDER ONLY and not copy everyone on the list. Geesh- we could cut opening emails down by a third some days... Reply all. That is what the list is for so everyone can see your reply. That is like carrying on a private conversation in a group of people after someone else started it. You should always reply all unless someone ask for anonymity. Stuart McDaniel Lawndale, NC Secr., Cleve. Co. Stuart wrote: You should always reply all unless someone ask for anonymity. Mike wrote: bothers ... I like it! or That's a good picture etc, etc. and they COPY THE ENTIRE LIST. Hi Stuart, Hi Mike and Hi Listers, [tip] To bridge the difference of opinion, one could pay a 'tip' when being moved to make a post that adds no comment or is off-topic. [end tip] I don't think it's for any of us* to say what the list is for even though I'm sure everyone knows beyond a reasonable doubt what it's for (with no two opinions alike) ;-) ;-) I apologize for not marking this topic OT, but it seems netiquette in generally uses more bandwith than the things we actually are offended by... but it really is off-topic. I think Scrooge Mike ;-) was referring to Me too posts as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force Internet Standards Organization's Netiquette guidelines § 3.1.3 3.1.3 NetNews Guidelines NetNews is a globally distributed system which allows people to communicate on topics of specific interest. It is divided into hierarchies, with the major divisions being: sci - science related discussions ... - Read all of a discussion in progress (we call this a thread) before posting replies. Avoid posting Me Too messages, where content is limited to agreement with previous posts. Content of a follow-up post should exceed quoted content. - Send mail when an answer to a question is for one person only. Remember that News has global distribution and the whole world probably is NOT interested in a personal response. However, don't hesitate to post when something will be of general interest to the Newsgroup participants. After recently disappointing myself unfortunately from some things I typed recently reflected by a crappy sleep deprived vegetative state, I read over the whole Netiquette guidelines, and felt it was time well used, kind of like purging with some Ave Maria's. I'm sure a lot of thought went into putting them together and it felt like a call to the director/principal's office, Anyone wishing to compare their opinions to this standard can find the standard at: http://tools.ietf.org/pdf/rfc1855.pdf Kindest wishes Doug *except the listowner, of course __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
