[meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine

2014-09-25 Thread Moni Waiblinger via Meteorite-list

HI All,

yes sad news!

I for one will miss the magazine very much and treasure the ones I have!

Robert Beauford wrote this to me when I asked him about the magazine:

Yes. Derek and Hazel (the publishers) have made the decision to cease
publication after the final issue of 2014. While the magazine has a
very loyal core of supporters and has been well cared for by advertisers
 and subscriber over the
years, the overall number of subscribers has fallen steadily for the
last decade. I believe that this simply reflects the fact that people
are turning more and more to the internet for their education, news, and
entertainment. Its been both an honor and a pleasure to support the
authors and the magazine as an editor, and I am grateful to everyone
involved, but upon consideration of the numbers, I support Derek and
Hazel completely in their decision. Its been great, but it is time to
lay it down. History has moved on.

So sad!

Just received my Fall issue of METEORITE magazine and found that the
next issue will be the last. I looked forward to each issue and am
greatly disappointed that it will no longer be published. As the
cover indicates, this is The Ultimate Guide to Meteorites. It will

Thanks to Derek Sears and his staff for many years of great reading
and valuable information on everything meteoritic.

This action will leave a big hole in the hobby.

2012-07-14 Thread Michael Blood
Hi Kevin and all,

I am certain I am not the only list member hopeful that the current
Editor of METEORITE MAGAZINE will choose to publish your 'The Rise of the
Raj and the Fall of Shergotty - Conclusion as edited by Joel, the magazine
Founder in the Nov. issue. We all recall fondly the outstanding work you did
On Nakhla (for which you received a HARVEY AWARD). As I recall, that
Article was one of the longest in the magazine's history - but I was riveted
Throughout, as I am sure were the entire readership.

The debates on the list that followed between you and Ron Baalke
Were, in my opinion, some of the best reading the LIST has ever had
To offer (relative LIST newbie's would be well advised to read your
Article and go into the LIST archives in this regard) The point being
That your article was nothing short of brilliant and profoundly impactful.
How a second article on Shergotty could be passed on is beyond my ken.

It would be a shame to see it have to be published on the net, as
that would devalue METEORITE MAGAZINE in a number of ways
And cause significant difficulty for future researchers.

However, if it comes to that I would be happy to run it as a link from my
site and I would encourage you to utilize as many sites as possible - not
just one, because as meteorite history goes it will be SIGNIFICANT, even
if it is only half as good as your Nakhla article, which has to rank in my
mind as perhaps the most significant article in the history of the magazine
- and that is saying a lot.

Best regards, Michael

PS: Might it be useful for list member to submit a petition requesting your
Concluding Article appear in the November issue of METEORITE MAGAZINE?
Perhaps if the majority of the readership were actively requesting the
article there would be less apprehension that people would be offended or
that it is too long.

And all this concern is from the generous friends I've made since I
started messing with meteorites one day after calling Bob Haag to
purchase any Zagami he might have left' in 1995. I am in awe this
night. Thank you.

The transparent nature of Robert Beauford's comment above surely
doesn't need any further comment from me, except to 'edit' his message
to correctly reflect that the word is 'damming' is spelled damning,
and while acting as Derek's involuntary 'Editor of the Board' I tried
to help him re-write his own editorial for the next August issue which
had several glaring errors that demeaned the quality of a scientific
journal.

There are no future Hemingway's working for Meteorite these days.

I've never had contact with Robert Beauford and now wonder why Derek
assigned him to respond. Where are you Derek? And why did you Robert
say 'you' wrote me about anything? Can you copy me on those emails,
Robert?

I guess 'someone' worries my 'imaginary letter' might be true but is
'too busy' to respond personally.

Robert, if you are in charge of the magazine, I hope you will
reconsider the 'expense' of publishing this concluding feature on the
fall of Shergotty. While everything in the August issue is
'important', maybe something unknown for the last 147 years regarding
the circumstances of the fall of THE Mars meteorite representing 98%
of every Mars meteorite ever recovered is worthy of the additional
expense. Shall I take up a collection?

I don't like to publicly add adjectives in front of people's names,
'liar' is an adjective, but I will make a public exception tonight. I
challenge Robert to forward here ANY email he has written me
especially one where he suggested that the feature would be considered
for the November issue.

Failing that and all the rest, I will leave m-list members to make
their own decision on the character of those now publishing Meteorite.
Fill in the adjective you feel is appropriate. Sad works for me.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite magazine - from the co-editor

2011-12-08 Thread Robert Beauford
Matthew and All,
Please allow me to clarify a couple of misunderstandings that cropped up in the
responses to this morning's discussion on the meteorite list-serve before
addressing your specific subject of communication.
-- Meteorite magazine and Meteorite Hunting and Collecting Magazine are not the
same thing. --
Meteorite magazine, which can be found on the web at
http://www.meteoritemag.org/  is not and has never been in any way associated
with Meteorite Hunting and Collecting Magazine (MHCM), which can be found on
the web at http://www.mhcmagazine.com/    I do not know the status of the MHCM
publication.  We are not associated with the promised refunds that were
mentioned or with any other obligations or commitments having to do with that
publication.  I personally subscribed to it when it started, but have never met
the people involved and have only read one issue.  Beyond that, I know nothing,
but truly wish them the best.
Meteorite magazine, through which I currently serve the community as co-editor,
has been around for 17 years, is published quarterly, and has no unfulfilled
financial or publication obligations beyond any short term screw-ups of the
sort that apparently happened with Matthew's subscription attempt about a week
ago.
It is my great pleasure to serve the meteorite community through this
publication, and I do so only because I value the publication, the subject, and
what I feel the work contributes to each of you.  From start to finish, I
consider each issue a team effort between the authors, the subscribers, the
advertisers, and the publication/editorial team.  Without each part of this
team, the magazine wouldn't happen.  Handling editorial and publication related
tasks, which includes subscriptions as well as great deal more, requires the
devotion of a tremendous amount of time to this publication.  Since the work is
almost completely volunteer, we also spend a great deal of time supporting
ourselves in order to make the time, energy and money that we put into this
service possible, as well as persuing our own research interests.  As a result,
a few days may occasionally pass between communications.  I think that most of
our authors and subscribers
would vouch that we do a pretty good job of keeping on top of things and making
it clear, through both our communications and actions, that we care.
Matthew, I am terribly sorry for the mix-up in regards your subscription, and I
understand your frustration.  I have absolutely no doubt that we will be able
to take care of it.  We are a 3-part team.  I primarily handle author
communications and editorial.  Derek Sears handles layout, printer
communications, and editorial.  Hazel Sears handles subscriptions, billing, and
advertising.  I have already forwarded your concern to her, and I'm sure she
will be able to take care of it with no problem.  You can always
reach Hazel with any problems of this sort at met...@meteoritemag.org    You

2011-12-08 Thread eric
Hi List, I'd like to also clarify. Robert is correct. Meteorite
Magazine and Meteorite Hunting and Collecting Magazine are not
associated in any way. So as to not further confuse. They are TWO
SEPARATE PUBLICATIONS.

MHC Magazine was created and run entirely by me, from home, and there
were no employees or team to handle all the work that goes into
creating and publishing a magazine. It was 100% me, and I accept full
responsibility for promises made to subscribers and advertisers, and
intend to make good on my promise of refunds for issues that were
unable to be delivered.

I placed a notice on the website back in September regarding the
status of my magazine:
http://www.mhcmagazine.com/blog/mhc-magazine-on-pause/ and explained
that it would take some time, but ALL subscribers and advertisers
would receive a full refund minus any magazine issues/advertising
they've already received.

MHC magazine was created by me out of a passion and love for
meteorites, and to share such with the meteorite world and those
interested in meteorites and astronomy related to space rocks.

As I've said publicly before, I regret that I bit off more than I
could chew, and as such MHC magazine has placed us in a dire financial
position. The magazine is on pause, indefinitely.

To everyone who supported me and my publication, I thank you from the
bottom of my heart, and I sincerely apologize for not being able to
deliver as promised. Know that it was not intentional. Sorry guys. I
tried. I will make it right with everyone!

Sorry to mail this in public but I'm not getting a timely response
otherwise. Please would somebody from meteorite magazine respond to the
mail I sent you on 29th November (and resent at the weekend) as a matter of
urgency.

A couple of weeks ago I decide to renew my subscription using the online
payment form on the met mag website. After filling in the form it claimed
transaction failed and suggested I use another card. I did this twice
more with different cards and got the same response each time. It has
transpired that each transaction was actually successful and I have paid
$47 three times. I mailed asking that any two of the three transactions
were refunded. The statements have now started arriving and I'm currently
$94 out of pocket. I expect a response within 24 hours or I will pursue it
with the card issuers.

Best regards,

Matt Smith.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite magazine August issue article welcome.

2011-06-02 Thread Robert Beauford
We would like to invite and welcome article submissions for the August and
November issues of Meteorite magazine.  August articles should be in before the
end of the first week in July if at all possible.  We need November articles
before October 1st.  I'd like to express my sincere thanks to all of our
supporters.  Without our subscribers, writers, and advertisers, the magazine
wouldn't be possible.  As always, editorial and article correspondance may be
addressed to meted...@uark.edu and subscription and advertising questions and
orders may be addressed to met...@uark.edu

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine Renewals and May Article Submissions

2011-01-29 Thread Robert Beauford
Dear Friends,
We have sent out subscription renewals, but have had a couple of notes from
people commenting that they have not been received. If you have not received
your Meteorite Magazine subscription renewal notice, please let us know (off
list). The contact point for this is Hazel at met...@uark.edu

On that note, I'd like to publicly thank Hazel Sears for all of the work that
she is doing in accounting, subscriptions, and billing. Please feel free to
express your appreciation to her as well. I think that she has been, by far,
the hardest working member of the team during this transition, and the least
recognized for her work.

If you would like to handle your subscription renewal directly, without needing
to send a check, the online subscription renewal site that Hazel has been
working on is now up and functioning, and can be found at:
http://meteoritemag.uark.edu/orders/orderform.asp

Regarding the May issue:
Please consider getting magazine article submissions in early. We are going to
try to get ahead of our deadlines on the May issue. Article submissions may be
sent to me at meted...@uark.edu or to Derek at dse...@uark.edu

Thank you all, ever so much, for your support of the magazine.
Sincerely,
Robert Beauford, co-editor, Meteorite Magazine

On another note, if you have new feature or article ideas that you would like

I hope no one is confusing the two publications... One is Meteorite
which is published by the fine folks at the University of Arkansas,
while the other publication is Meteorite! Hunting and collecting
published by Eric Wichman. Like others, I have only received the
Premiere Issue, July 2010, of that and nothing since. But I have never
had any trouble with the Razorback,s publication, them's Arkansasiers.

Hi Everyone:

Part of the reason Nancy and I finally resigned as Editors of Meteorite
was the lack of transparency with respect to things like subscriptions and
how they were handled (Maria Haas, Nancy, and I tried to resolve this when
we worked on the August issue, just before things happened that led to our
resignation). I do not know how this might change now that everything is
being done at the University of Arkansas where the magazine is actually
published.

If you only received the first issue, it is because you did not pay for
2010. Subscribers get the February issue and a notice to renew (not sure
how this is done) and if they do not hear from you, I think that they just
let your subscription expire (at least that is how I think it worked).
Not the way I would like to see it handled and maybe with new people in
Arkansas, things will improve.

Frustrated ex-editor.

 Hi Everyone:

Part of the reason Nancy and I finally resigned as Editors
 of Meteorite
was the lack of transparency with respect to things like
 subscriptions and
how they were handled (Maria Haas, Nancy, and I tried to
 resolve this when
we worked on the August issue, just before things happened
 that led to our
resignation). I do not know how this might change now that
 everything is
being done at the University of Arkansas where the magazine
 is actually
 published.

If you only received the first issue, it is because you did
 not pay for
2010. Subscribers get the February issue and a notice to
 renew (not sure
how this is done) and if they do not hear from you, I think
 that they just
let your subscription expire (at least that is how I think
 it worked).
Not the way I would like to see it handled and maybe with
 new people in
 Arkansas, things will improve.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine

2010-12-14 Thread Meteorites USA
Thomas, You are correct, one issue of MHC has been shipped. If anyone is
referring to MHC, we're running late on printing issue #2 (which is LIVE
on the site now) and, we're finishing up the #3 digital edition now.
Once complete we go to print and everyone will receive their magazines
mailed out direct from our printer. Larry is right about delivery
times... Please allow a 2-3 weeks for delivery from the printer
excluding the holiday. Email me directly if you have any questions, or
use our contact form: http://www.mhcmagazine.com/contact/

Thanks for the patience guys...

Eric

2010-12-13 Thread lebofsky
Hi Dennis:

Don't panic!

Have you ever heard of the US mail? Also this there is a holiday coming
up. When I was editor, there were a few times when I actually knew when an
issue left the printers. My impression is that foreign airmail got their
copies within a week and US subscribers could be as long as two weeks
after it was sent out by the printers, so expect it to be a Christmas
present, would be my guess, based on the email that was sent out.

Hello Larry and List,

I am sorry to hear you and Nancy are leaving Meteorite Magazine. You both,
along with Jessica Park, did a very professional job for this long
established publication, your talents will be missed! I wish you all happy
success in whatever direction your lives take you. It will take a strong
team of dedicated individuals to fill your shoes, I'm am sure they are out
there and already discussing possibilities! ;-)

Dear Friends:

By now, all of you who subscribe to Meteorite magazine should have gotten
your August issue. We hope that you like the changes. With Jessica Park
leaving as Production Manager, we were asked to take over the production
of the August issue and look into ways to increase circulation. We wanted
this to be the first step in bringing Meteorite into the twenty-first
century. We think that we succeeded. Please let us know what you think of
the new style; we worked hard on this.

Nancy and I could not have done it alone. Carol Nelson was our
professional graphic designer and we had advice from Geoff Notkin and
Maria Haas. We especially want to thank Maria for all of the work she did.
She was invaluable in helping in the layout and in the proofing of the
final product, not an easy task. She also took on the task of getting
nearly 20 new subscribers and advertisers. No magazine can survive without
a source of loyal readers and advertisers. Thank you, Maria.
That said, Nancy and I must now say good-bye to Meteorite magazine. We are
doing this for both personal and professional reasons. With several key
personnel and policy changes at the publishing end, we felt that it was
time for us to move on. We will miss the interaction with our readers, but
look forward to maintaining the friendships we have formed over the last
five years.

Anyone wanting to submit articles to for publication should do so through
met...@uark.edu. At the moment, we do not know who will be taking over as
Editor or Production Manager.

We thank all of you for your support of Meteorite magazine.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite magazine

2010-09-12 Thread martin goff
Larry and Nancy,

Thats sad news indeed that you and Nancy are leaving the helm of
Meteorite magazine The magazine has gone from strength to strength
under your control and both you and also Joel Schiff before you have
left a legacy that hopefully will carry on in the same vein. Your work
has been much appreciated by me and as a relative newcomer to
meteorites meteorite magazine was my first port of call after
acquiring my first specimen in 2007. Without meteorite magazine i
would have missed out on lots of valuable information not available
elsewhere. I like the breadth and depth of the different articles and
feel it achieves this very fine balance perfectly bearing in mind the
vast difference in knowledge between professional meteorite academics
and beginning collectors and everyone in between that the readership
comprises of. This mix of articles comes in no small part from the
Editors and i want to thankyou for what you have achieved with the
magazine and wish you both well in whatever new projects you are
moving on to. I also wish to thankyou for the assistance you provided
me with my recent Wold Cottage article that you very kindly published.

All the best for the future

Hi Geoff, all,

Thanks for that Goeff, and greetings to you too.

Just a thought that lazy, disorganized people like myself have not got around
to subscribing to Meteorite magazine (and I know I should and want to) because
the method of subscribing is not the most user friendly. If someone could set
up an online method or host a paypal method I'm sure the subscriptions would
rise dramatically.

My thanks too go to all those who have made this meteorite year
great...especially those who made my Ensisheim trip the best yet.
First of all Bernd for initiating my link up with Peter Davidson,
Zelimir for organizing all that and the generous help he gave us to get there,
and Peter himself for the great company out there, on the journey and the tour
round the stored collection at the museum in Edinburgh.

Greetings to those others out at Ensisheim, Marc, Seigfreid, Karin, Peter,
Svend, Anne and many more too numerous to mention...great times.

Also greetings to Rob Elliot for putting up with my visit to his collection at
home and hospitality just a week before most of it was auctioned...now that and
the auction were exceptional events for me in 2009.

See you all in Tucson most likely,

and a happy new year,

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine

2009-12-15 Thread lebofsky
Hello Everyone:

Just to let you know that it looks like we will have the February issue of
Meteorite magazine sent out by the printers in time for the Tucson Gem and
Mineral Show! Since US snail mail is so slow, I am not sure if those
copies will arrive prior to the show, but I should have extra copies with
me during the show.

The articles in the issue will be:

The Remarkable Meteorite Fall on Lolland, Part 2, by Thomas Grau
Return to Buzzard Coulee, by Ralph Croning and Naomi Davis
A Star (Chaser) is Born, by Ruben Garcia
Discovery of a Meteorite Impact in Southeast Morocco by Abderrahmane Ibhi,
Hassane Nachit, and El Hassan Abia
Holbrook-One More Little Adventure, by Fred Mason
The ASU Meteorite Collection, by Al Mitterling
Beginner's Luck, by Lisa Marie Morrison
The Rob Elliott Meteorite Auction, by Angus Self
Sharing the Enthusiasm, by Matt Smith
Star Slough and Pwdre Ser, by David Andrew White and Angel Nieves-Rivera

Now, down to business: We are already thinking about the May issue of
Meteorite. Our deadline is February 21, so if you are interested in
submitting an article, we need to have it by then.

Please let me know if you are planning on writing an article or wondering
if what you are thinking of writing would be of interest to us and our
readers. We can also talk about this at the Gem and Mineral Show, but that
is fairly close to the deadline!

We hope to hear from you soon.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine - Another great issue

2009-11-30 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi List,

I highly recommend that any collector who does not subscribe to
Meteorite Magazine, should immediately go subscribe - now! Stop
reading this message, open a new browser tab, and go to :

http://meteoritemag.uark.edu/

If you are missing out on this publication, then you are missing out
the best source of meteorite-related information for the layman.

This month's issue is a perfect example of why every collector should
read this magazine :

1) the heartfelt letter from Dorothy Norton and the shared experiences
of his many friends and admirers. This demonstrates the sense of
community in the meteorite world. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes
about Richard playing pranks on the unflappable Dr. Leonard.

2) the article about Gujba that sheds some light on this unusual
meteorite and the misconceptions about it. This demonstrates the
pursuit of science that many in the collecting world support - not
just collecting space rocks, but learning about them as well.

3) the excellent article by Anita Westlake on how to talk to the
public about meteorites. This should be required reading for those
who are considering their first steps into the world of meteorite
outreach.

4) The articles about tektites which clearly depict the various forms
these objects take and why they assume these forms. Ever wonder where
those odd little C shaped tektite pieces come from? They were
spalled off of larger masses still in a fluid state. This information
is available from other sources on the web and in print, but Meteorite
Magazine always finds a way to present an old topic with a new twist
or lesson. I've read dozens of papers and articles about tektites,
and I walked away from this month's issue with a few new insights I
didn't have before.

5) Thomas Grau's account of the Danish fall on Lolland is illustrative
of the confusion and hard work that immediately follows a promising
fireball report.

6) Thanks to Richard Kowalski - I got a peek inside the Apollo 11,
40th anniversary shindig at the University of Arizona. I wish I could
have been there, but this article is the next best thing. :)

7) Did I forget Roger and John's excellent chondrule photos in the
Centerpiece section? If a collector hasn't looked at a meteorite
sample under a microscope, then that collector is missing out on a
whole new world of enjoying space rocks.

8) I loved the photo of the frustrated searcher hugging a big rock, in
the article about the Ukrainian bolide. This is another example of
the hard work surrounding the hunt for meteorites.

The whims of the meteorite collector's market may not be predictable,
but one thing in the world of meteorites is for certain - that every
Meteorite subscriber will receive 4 quarterly issues packed with the
very best that meteorites have to offer. This is my second year as a
subscriber and I look forward to what year 3 holds! :)

Best regards and happy huntings,

MikeG

MikeG

I absolutely agree: it is another great issue for all the reasons that MikeG has
kindly summarized. My copy is on my printer right beside me and I can see
the smiling, friendly face of O.R. Norton. He is gone, but, nevertheless, he is
here, right here, right there where *you* are, where *we* are!

Right now I am working on a NWA project that I am not (yet) authorized to
talk about but it is something that will blow your socks off, ... this you can
believe! While trying to grasp all the things I saw, I turned to the latest
issue
of Met.Mag. with Richard's photo on the cover and he smiled at me and said:

No worries, you're doing just fine. You can handle this adequately!

Don't believe it?
Look at the photo!
Feel it!

 Norton's life

 Dear Friends:

As most of you are aware, O. Richard Norton was a supporter of and
involved with Meteorite magazine from the very beginning, He wrote his
first article, “Meteorites—Chips off the Old Asteroid Block,” in the
 first
issue of Meteorite! in 1995. He also wrote “Centerpiece” for ten
 years.
 We will all miss him.

Because of this, we would like to celebrate the life Richard Norton by
dedicating the November issue of Meteorite magazine to him. Many of you
have written to the Meteorite and IMCA lists expressing your feelings and,
in some cases, giving your personal experiences with Richard or with one
of the many books he has written.

We would like to include a series of anecdotes about your personal
experiences with Richard (or one of his many books) that can be published
in the November issue. As much as possible, we would like to do this as a
historical sequence with pictures, to show who he has influenced in the
meteorite community, in what way, and when. How far back does his
influence go? Ron Hartman and Richard were at UCLA together and Nancy took
an astronomy class and a photography class from him in 1974 and 1975 when
he was the Director of the Grace H. Flandrau Planetarium here in Tucson.

Please try to limit your text to one or two images and about a hundred
 words!

[meteorite-list] Meteorite magazine, call for papers

2008-10-20 Thread lebofsky
Hello Everyone:

We hope that you are enjoying the August issue of Meteorite. We have just
finished with the proofs of the November issue. We have listed below the
articles that will be in that issue.

Now, guess what?

Yes, it is that time again! It is time to start thinking about writing an
article for the February issue of Meteorite. The next deadline is November
30 (though earlier is always better). It is the start of our fourth year
as editors! Hard to believe.

There are still a number of you who put off submitting articles, so I
will be getting back to you very soon. Articles can be anywhere from
about 1,000 words up to 2,500 words (or a little longer) with 4 or 5
pictures. A good picture might even make it to the cover! We also welcome
book reviews and letters to the editors.

Please consider writing an article. If you are not sure, contact us! We
hope to hear from you soon.

Articles in the November issue of Meteorite:

Centerpiece: Barred Olivine Chondrules: The Pearls of Meteorites

A Featured Review of “Field Guide to Meteors and Meteorites,” by Norton and
  Chitwood

Svend Buhl, et al.: Account of a Meteorite Fall Near Bassikounou,
 Mauritania, Pt. II

Sonny Clary: A New Meteorite Discovery in Chicago Valley, California

Greg Redfern: America is Heading Back to the Moon

Zelimir Gabelica, et al.: Ensisheim-Meteorite 2008: From Russia, With Love

Arthur Ehlmann: Monnig Meteorite Gallery Five-Year Anniversary

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine/ New California Meteorites for sale

2007-03-17 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi All,
If you subscribe to Meteorite Magazine you already
know that current issue contains a story about some
nice finds my son and I made in California.

http://www.mr-meteorite.com/californiafindspart1.htm

The meteorites we found are currently undergoing
classification(it could take 6-12 months for
classification)and I'll post the results right here as
soon as I have them. I'm sure it is an ordinary
chondrite but that's all I know right now.

Several list members have asked if I'll be selling any
of the over 400 fragments that we picked up.
Truthfully, most of the fragments, and all of the
small individuals are already gone.

Out of the nearly 8 kilos found I have only 2 kilos
left to sell or trade. If you collect California
meteorites or would like to have a meteorite in your
collection with an insitu picture here's your chance.

Each meteorite I have listed will come with an 8x10
insitu picture. Click here for pictures and prices.
http://www.mr-meteorite.com/californiafinds4sale.htm

I will consider trade but not for the ones I've listed
here. My son Ruben Jr. needs to raise money for a new
metal Detector.

If you'd like to make a trade then I'll have to take
some pictures and email you off list. Remember all I
have left for trades are small 5-80 gram fragments.

Thanks,

Ruben Garcia

Hi all,
Thank you everyone for the all the interest in my
California meteorites. A few have been sold but some
remain. I want to correct something that I said. I
previously stated that the classification could take
6-12 months. I should have said 1 to 2 years, because
that is more realistic. During this time the exact
location will remain a secret. Only when the
classification is through will I post results.

Good Evening List,

If you are as fortunate as I am to have had personal and meteoritical
dealings with Robert, it should come as no surprise as to the quality
and readability of his excellent article on Allende hunting in the
current issue of Meteorite.

WHAT did come as a surprise, and further attests to his modesty, is
the NUMBER of specimens that he has found - 2,000! Further, his donation
of a large portion of these finds to a public institution - his local
planetarium - shows how fortunate our community is to have a human being
of his caliber amongst us.

Sorry your run of expedition finds (3 for 4 now) was broken Robert but
I am grateful you and Jerry returned safely.

I look forward to reading about your next adventure/find.

All the best,

Greg

[meteorite-list] meteorite Magazine CBIC

2006-08-29 Thread Gerald Flaherty
Greg Redfern's Article on CBIC is truley spellbinding. Stort, to the point
of being tantalizing, Greg's enthusiasim carries the reader through the
tremors of the blast, to the hopes the research projects for humankind into
the future.
Superior in every way, one can only hope that every Meteorite Collector will
be moved to better appreciate the treasures he possesses.

Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite Magazine CBIC

2006-08-29 Thread Robert Woolard
Gerald and List,

  I heartily second Gerald's comments on Greg's
excellent article. Greg's passion for the CBIC and
impacts in general is quite evident. But even more
importantly is his drive to help educate our kids on
the significance of such events. I know that Greg
spends a lot of his time volunteering in this sort of
matter, and I for one greatly appreciate his efforts.
Thanks for all your hard work, Greg, and for giving us
such a great story to read! It certainly gave me a
whole new perspective on the awesome forces that
created the CBIC.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite magazine: Call for Papers

2006-04-14 Thread Larry Lebofsky
Hi All:

Many of you have finally gotten the February issue of Meteorite. The rest
should be getting them soon (we have no control of the postal system). For
those of you who wrote articles for the February issue, your extra copies
should also be on their way. Thanks to all of you who let us know that your
copies have arrived and for your comments on the magazine. They are greatly
appreciated. If you have any subscription questions please send your emails to:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The May issue has been edited and is now being typeset. In the May issue, we
have a new feature: Pictures of all of our authors! We hope you like this. We
may also try something new for the August issue.

Now, the reason for this email!

Nancy and I are looking for contributors for the August issue of Meteorite.
The deadline for submission is May 19, only 5 weeks away. For those of you who
have never written for Meteorite before, we are always seeking new authors. We
are especially looking for young authors who may never have written for a
magazine before. This includes students who want the experience of writing a
scientific paper (for a more general audience) before writing for a
professional journal, or young and/or new meteorite hunters who want to tell
everyone about their experiences out in the field.

For old authors, yes, the deadline is much earlier than when Joel was
editor. Unfortunately, we do not have Joel's 11 years of experience behind us.
We want to keep up the quality of Meteorite and it takes us a little longer to
do this.

Authors get 5 free copies of the issue that their article appears in.

Papers can be sent to either of the addresses below. If you want to know if
what you want to publish is appropriate, just email us with your idea(s).
We will get back to you quickly. Check out our website
(http://meteoritemag.uark.edu). We should have more detailed Instructions for
Authors posted soon. We have only a few requests:

1. Articles should, be 2,000 to 3,000 words (or shorter).

2. Include pictures and captions. If you want to send a few extra, that is
fine, we sometimes need to fill up small spaces.

3. If you have references, PLEASE make them as complete as possible (saves me
a lot of searching time)

4. Include a full postal address and email address so that we can publish the
email address
and send you your extra copies (not everyone is a subscriber)

5. Send us a photo of yourself and a short description of what you do in your
real life. We want readers to see who you are.

We do have a small backlog of papers, but articles submitted by the deadline
(May 19) will come out in the August or November issue. Please note that we do
sometimes reject papers for a number of reasons.

Any question? Any suggestions? Please contact us.

We look forward to serving you as editors and hope that you continue to enjoy
Meteorite.

Larry and Nancy Lebofsky
