Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Auction Days Numbered?

2011-10-02 Thread cdtucson
Eric,
EBay has been sued many times. Luckily they keep winning. Even so they have had
to make numerous changes.
Supposedly the USA sales account for about 46 percent (4 billion dollars) of
their total sales so, by limiting some of the off-shore visibility they may be
cutting their own throat. On the other hand people who depend on off-shore
sales could lose a possible 54 percent of their revenue. Ouch!
According to the link below they are actively trying to stop the fraud but, it
takes people like us to hit the report button in order to stop the auctions.
They told me that three day auctions are very hard to catch in time though.
Consequently some stuff does fall through the cracks.
For these reasons I think eBay will continue to try and continue as many sales
as possible without becoming too much the Man.

Ebay cares about that, but if any of these things increase their risk,

Ebay turned off international site visibility on most of my auctions too as I

other than weights and prices, but ebay chose to change some kind of policy
without warning, which thereby resulted in the action they took. I spent

By trial and error, I removed lines of text from my descriptions until I no

like Big Kahuna Meteorites, scale cubes, my shipping information or country
names in my text descriptions, and when they found them would send me this

now retain international site visibility, but have had to cull most of my text

Hi Gang,

I know I sound like a broken record with this, but if ANY of you want
to free yourselves of eBay restrictions and fees, contact me off-list.
I will gladly point you to an eCommerce hosting solution that is
turn key - just put your inventory in, tweak the look, and away you
go. The fees are a small fraction of eBay and there are no
restrictions.

There is a myth about eBay's traffic or reach, but it is a myth.
The majority of eBay's millions of members could care less about
meteorites, so why take them into account when deciding which venue to
offer your wares?

My sales actually increased when I stopped selling on eBay.

There are more than enough buyers to go around for all of us and I
don't mind helping a fellow dealer improve their bottom line. It's
time to stop looking at each other as competition and start
cooperating with each other to everyone's benefit.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Auction Days Numbered?

2011-09-30 Thread JoshuaTreeMuseum
I haven't noticed any changes in eBay policy toward international meteorite
sales. The people that are being hasseled were probably reported by someone.
It only takes one snitch telling on you for whatever reason to get an
auction shut down. I had a stalagmite auction closed recently because of a
person morally opposed to the selling of speleothems. They lied and said I
stole the formations from US gov't land, when I clearly stated they were
from a Chinese dealer at the Tucson Show. After I explained the situation to
eBay, they let me relist the item, but there was no refund for fees.

The tattle-tale was nutty, emailing me to say I was stealing and selling
national treasures. I sort of provoked him by saying since he was such a
moralist, he must have returned his stolen property to the nearest Native
American tribe.

Again, I have not seen any changes at all in eBay policy, except for the
email address prohibition.

Well: at risk for looking for a conspiracy where it doesn't exist, this
phrase eBay told you caught my attention:

However, we had to remove International Site Visibility from your
listing. Of course, we won't be charging you the fee for it.

Specifically the fee comment, as if a fee had any logical place
whatsover in that comment! Considering that eBay policy of charging
for extra pictures, second line titles and whatever else, it's a small
wonder they haven't charged for additional country visibility.

That small wonder may be due to fear eBay will lose its established
unmatchable wide visibility worldwide network which is the de facto
monopoly it has if it touches who can and can't see your sales page.
But, it isn't too different in concept from the additional cost for
listing in more categories, so I am suspicious.

Suspicious that ... all these rules that eBay has never been concerned
about before and with such difficulty when you need them, are just a
huge smokescreen to somehow introduce the idea of paying for additional
country visibility. They probably got the idea from exorbitant
international excess baggage each time they go from SFO to their
European branches. It wouldn't be without justification, though to
charge for additional countries since eBay has additional overhead
costs for each of those sites that are now in question for listings.

Kindest wishes
Doug

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Auction Days Numbered?

2011-09-30 Thread Ed Deckert

Greg,

Ebay is protecting itself. Scale Cube is considered an ethnic slur in the
nation of Cubonia! (It borders to the left of Elbonia.)

I still don't understand their objection to scale cube...

Ebay has been charging additional fees for international site visibility for
over a year now, but have been getting very picky about what one states in
an item description - this started happening less than two weeks ago.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Auction Days Numbered?

2011-09-30 Thread MexicoDoug

Any corrections?:

Clearly a lot more going on in eBay with the international viewing of
auction than many of us were aware. I searched a bit and information
is all cock-eyed, but this seems to be the gist of it:

* If you list on eBay.com, you have no problem and anyone browsing
eBay.com can find your stuff as always, internationally, there are no
fees. Ebay has not charged any international visibility fees for this
- before or now.

* Some countries have their own sites, a more tailored interface for
citizens. Some listings mysteriously from the ebay.com site appear
there at no fee, usually when the endemic offering is small, while
others don't. So if you want to appear in the ebay.de or the ebay.it,
ebay.ct, the ebay.pt site, etc., you have the option in the .com site
of paying a fee per additional market to guarantee you will appear - if
you really think it is worth it to appear there in the first place,
remembering people searching ebay.com will see you and you are just
trying to go the extra painful mile (km?) to put you name to some
country.

* Each of those national market sites has a database of blacklisted
words designed to protect the site; however, a lot gets lost in machine
auditing and listings are getting the international visibility boot,
which no human can understand and address by trial and error. So what
is happening lately defies explanation and has been called a bug by
some as eBay tries to rework the problems in its new can of stinking
sardines it opened and remerge things to some hybrid of what they were
and the present situation. It seems to be a hot potato at the moment
that will improve by necessity.

* Some countries, especially in the UK which has a dual
European/American commercial base, have been paying an additional fee
to be visible in other countries, for longer than others depending
where eBay stuck its fingers first.

* eBay seems to haveopened a stinking can of sardines with
international visibility and is trying to migrate back to a more
universal platform, free, especially with the US, Canada and Australia
in one block, possibly also the UK included. The way they are
controlling what appears where is by making sure you have indicated
automatically the shipping cost to whereverland.

* People contacting eBay customer service have been very frustrated and
not gotten many concrete reasons, more often than not misleading advice
is received.

* The alternative on eBay is just to use the ebay.com site and hope
your customers worldwide do to. This is a prettydecent for in
meteorites. If not, you can create a second seller ID on your favorite
international site and isolate your international feedback, which can
be a good idea considering the issues that crop up with customs and
shipping that are beyond your control which can cause buyers'
frustration.

Kindest wishes
Doug
