Please don't move that old meteorite

The state of California Tuesday sued to block the acquisition of the "Old Woman meteorite" by the Smithsonian Institute, in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Claiming the three-ton meteorite, discovered last year in California's Old Woman Mountains, is a natural resource under state law, Atty. Gen. Evelle Younger's office asked the court for injunctions barring its removal from the state.
Deputy Atty. Gen. Daniel Selmi is expected to seek a temporary restraining order today against Giles W. Meade, director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.
The meteorite has been on display at the museum for several weeks since a military helicopter plucked it out of the ground 170 miles east of Los Angeles.
It is scheduled for removal from the museum and transported to Washington, D.C. on Thursday.
