Looks like it may be a highly weathered "Desert Rose" - hunk of white,
translucent cryptocrystalline quartz common to the deserts of the SoWest.

Re: [meteorite-list] Possible Tektite

2013-10-31 Thread Jim Wooddell

Hi Phil,

Just a thought...did you do any tests to determine what this is?
Hardness? Specific Gravity? The common consciences of the picture is
quartz, so the hardness should be close to 7 mohs and the specific
gravity about

2.65.

A streak plate has a hardness of about 7. So if you took a coffee cup,
turn it over to expose the unglazed ring that it sits on, and try to
scratch the specimen, it should feel like it sliding across the surface,
no scratch or very very little scratch.

If it's something other that quartz, you likely would get a good scratch.

Just saying!

Cheers!

Jim

Definitely not a tektite. 100% terrestrial. As soon as I looked at the

Phil

They look very like some glass slag that was brought into me for
identification. A lot of industrial waste like this was used as hard-core
during the railway building years of the 19th Century and can therefore turn up
anywhere in the country where a railway line or a road was built. This piece
certainly did not have any connection with local glassmaking.

[meteorite-list] Possible Tektite

2013-10-29 Thread Joshua Tree Earth & Space Museum
Someone brought this into the museum for an ID. It looks sort of like a
tektite. It doesn't really look like any slag glass that I've seen. No find
location was given. Any tektite experts have an opinion?
