Hello Dana, I just gave the sad news to Moni.  We are very saddened, but also
very heartened that we got to know this very gentleperson.  I introduced Moni
to Larry a decade ago at Majuba Hill when she joined Larry and me on a hunt at
the Placers. John Wolfe introduced me to Larry back in the very early days of
Franconia. The three of us have hunted together at many localities in AZ CA and
NV.  Being a part of that generation, this loss hits close to home and is very
personal to me.The Tucson Show will always be missing a very special part now
that Larry's smiling face is no longer there.
With condolences to his family, Bob and Moni

Hello all.I want to wish everyone the
world over a truly Merry Cristmas. Our
holidays were saddened today.I got news that my wife's
 older brother died
suddenly in his sleep. He had been ill for sometime but
 nothing like was
 expected.We are still in shock.He was 61 years old.Again I
 do not want to burden
anyone down, but as they say,we are family.Happy holidays
 all.

[meteorite-list] sad news about Richard Willey

2010-09-02 Thread Larry Twink Monrad
I just heard from Shirley Wetmore, retired curatorial assistant at
University of Arizona Flandreau Planetarium Mineral Museum that on August
28th Richard Willey died of natural causes in Dallas,Texas.

He of course is the author of the book
The Tucson Meteorites:
Their history from frontier Arizona to the Smithsonian

and he spent years searching for the source of the Tucson
Ring along with others.

I am so glad I have a copy of his book.

[meteorite-list] Sad news.. Robert Hutchison has died.

2007-01-30 Thread mark ford

Rob Elliott has asked me to forward this sad news to the list….

Sad news indeed.

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [britishandirishmeteoritesociety] Sad news

I've just received a very sad email from my friends at the Open University:

Hi Rob, I am emailing with some very sad news…. Bob Hutchison died on Friday
morning. We are all very shocked as we new he was ill but he was one of those
people that seemed to be going forever. He was even writing a paper on
chondrule formation while he was in hospital over Christmas. He came back home
again, even spoke with Monica about coming in to the OU to work on Hambleton
some more but unfortunately he deteriorated and had to go back into hospital
and never recovered
Many of you will know Robert Hutchison as a past meteorite curator at the NHM,
joint author of the 4th edition Catalogue of Meteorites, a top meteoriticist,
and highly respected meteorite guru of our time.
I first met Bob many years ago, during my earliest visit to the Natural History
Museum, London, circa 1997. Monica Grady showed me around and introduced me to
many people in various rooms labs along the long corridors. Names and faces
started to blur after so many introductions, but while shaking hands with an
older meteoriticist sitting at the microscope, my ears picked up when Monica
introduced him as Robert Hutchison. I immediately exclaimed something like
Wow! Robert Hutchison!! and excitedly shook his hand again. I felt a bit
foolish about it afterwards, but
I got to know Bob over the following years, and despite taking up huge amounts
of his time (actually, his retirement time) with thousands of meteorite
questions, Bob was always pleased to help with detailed explanations, and
thoroughly passionate about his subject, for which I'm very grateful.
He'll be sadly missed.

Sad news indeed.

ROBERT HUTCHISON (2004) Meteorites: A Petrologic, Chemical, and
Isotopic Synthesis (Cambridge Planetary Science Series, pp. 506):

Meteorite research is fundamental to our understanding of the origin and early
history
of the Solar System. Some meteorites were produced by melting on asteroids, a
few are
from the Moon and others are Martian. Their study yields a chronology of the
first 100
million years of Solar System history, and provides evidence that our Sun went
through
a highly radiative, T Tauri stage. This book considers the mechanism and timing
of core
formation and basaltic volcanisin on asteroids, and the effects of heating
water-rich
bodies. Results from meteorite research are placed in a galactic setting, and a
theory is
proposed for the origin of the planets of our Solar System. This advanced yet
succinct
introduction provides a classification of meteorites, and discusses their ages
and origin.

It will be valuable to graduate students and scientists in astrophysics, space
research,
cosmochemistry, geochemistry, isotope geology, and Earth and planetary
sciences. Robert
Hutchison is a retired research scientist and curator of meteorites at the
Natural His-
tory Museum, London. He gained his Ph.D. in igneous petrology from Glasgow
University,
and has held positions at Keele University, the Nigerian Geological Survey, and
Leeds
University. His main research interest is in the origin and early history of
the Solar
System, based on clues from ancient inclusions in chondrite meteorites. He has
written
or co-authored several previous books, including the Catalogue of Meteorites
(4th edition,
British Museum of Natural History, 1985), and Meteorites: The Key to our
Existence
(Natural History Museum, 1992). Hutchison has served on the committees of
several
learned societies and is a Fellow of the Meteoritical Society.

In 2000 he was awarded a Gold Medal by the Royal Astronomical Society for his
contribution
to meteorite research, and in 2002, * * Asteroid 5308 Hutchison * * was named
in his honor.
