Re: [meteorite-list] Testing meteoric gemstones
Distinguishing between terrestrial olivine and pallasite olivine probably isn't quick and easy. Electron microprobe would show the difference in the Fe/Mn which is diagnostic. I've never used one, but a handheld XRF might be able to do this too. If you don't mind vaporizing the stone with a laser -- the oxygen isotopes are diagnostic :) :) :) Carl * Carl B. [meteorite-list] Testing meteoric gemstones
Once again, I have found someone on ebay (surprise factor zero, Captain!) selling what I am convinced are fake pallasite cut gems. Unlike the last fake seller I confronted, this seller seems willing to entertain the idea he may have a fake or two, and wants to look into having them tested. Are there any quick and nasty tests an amateur or garden variety jeweler can do that will confirm whether the cut gemstone is a. an olivine and b. extraterrestrial? Alternately, can anyone suggest reputable testing places where he could have his stones evaluated (he's in Canada)? It would be annoying to spend a couple hundred dollars on testing, only to find you had a nice bit of faceted glass or garnet. Best! [meteorite-list] Testing to Diagnose Power Event in Mars Rover Curiosity
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=4499 Testing to Diagnose Power Event in Mars Rover Jet Propulsion Laboratory March 3, 2015 Mars Science Laboratory Mission Status Report NASA's Curiosity Mars rover is expected to remain stationary for several days of engineering analysis following an onboard fault-protection action on Feb. 27 that halted a process of transferring sample material between devices on the rover's robotic arm. Telemetry received from the rover indicated that a transient short circuit occurred and the vehicle followed its programmed response, stopping the arm activity underway at the time of the irregularity in the electric current. We are running tests on the vehicle in its present configuration before we move the arm or drive, said Curiosity Project Manager Jim Erickson, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. This gives us the best opportunity to determine where the short is. A transient short in some systems on the rover would have little effect on rover operations. In others, it could prompt the rover team to restrict use of a mechanism. When the fault occurred, the rover was conducting an early step in the transfer of rock powder collected by the drill on the arm to laboratory instruments inside the rover. With the drill bit pointed up and the drill's percussion mechanism turned on, the rock powder was descending from collection grooves in the bit assembly into a chamber in the mechanism that sieves and portions the sample powder. The sample powder is from a rock target called Telegraph Peak. The same transfer process was completed smoothly with samples from five previous drilling targets in 2013 and 2014. NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to assess ancient habitable environments and major changes in Martian environmental conditions. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, built the rover and manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. [meteorite-list] Testing Documentation - NWA 5799 Documentation
This is what I am able to get from the person that does my testing - It is the Documentation for NWA 5799 - A very nice, but ordinary LL4 http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/NWA5799p1.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/NWA5799p2.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/NWA5799p3.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/NWA5799p4.jpg While I know this is not the norm, I ask why not? Why can I get this, but none of the people with all these well known contacts cant? How hard would it be to provide some testing information to the person submitting the material? Why is this not mandatory? What is the cost of a few sheets of paper and a couple minutes to print it out? In my opinion, if it does not come with documentation like this, it is not as valuable as it could be. Sure it may not be spot on exact as to the sample sold, but its far better then any ID card. I know I have brought this up before, but from some comments about pairing and testing, this again seems a good time to bring it up again... To all dealers/Testers out there, why not offer more? Cost is nothing compared to added value the paperwork adds. Make copies and include it with the material... add the extra 30 cent it may cost to do if your profit margins are not good... In my opinion, this is real documentation, something I have never got from anyone I have ever bought from. The bottom line is, If I can get this, for an LL Chondrite, Why cant you guys get it? Why is this not the normal thing to do? Is it not better? It comes down to WHO is selling it in my opinion as to how much fuss is raised. How many of the NWA martians are out there with solid documentation as to actual scientific pairing? about 20% maybe, if that much? In my opinion an NWA martian is just as valuable as NWA pick your number. I have never purchased a meteorite with actual testing information, so by the opinion of some, its not official as not documentation came with it. I think more dealers need to get the people testing to provide them with actual paperwork to go with the material. For putting out 20% they should provide more. Even if its only from type sample testing, more documentation is better then an ID card on BC paper. I would think considerably, as most collectors desire documentation for their pieces, as any collector does. However, others may not care if they can get (a martian or lunar) for less money; but with higher risk. I would think that most dealers would want to get everything classified, as they could get more money. I can certainly understand that the nomads want to keep their locations secret, but the dealer should still get the finds classified, and find out if certain pieces were found together. I think over time, the unclassified stones will lose value, while the classified stones will increase in value. I think it's a shame that so many stones get unclassified, it's like have old paintings or works of are unsigned. I have been lead to believe by your list postingsover the past couple of years that you have been to Morocco only twice and that your main method of operation is to have large amounts shipped directly to you in Canada. You have claimed in the past that this keeps the costs down and I agree it should. How is it that you nowclaim to deal only with the nomads for your meteorites when everyone knows that the majority of meteorites coming out of Morocco originate in Algeria? Are you saying that you go to Algeria? Since you have only been to Morocco twice, how can you claim to know the activities of the other dealers who actually make the trip to Morocco frequently such as Fectay, Labenne, Carion, Farmer, etc. You are aware that the Moroccans will tell you what they think that you want to hear don't you. So if you are relying on what your contacts are telling you then you are probably being lied to. I do not think it is fair for you to try to elevate yourself over the other dealers bringing meteorites out of Morocco by using what is obviously false claims. I think that you have done a great service to collectors by having meteorites shipped to you and offering them at discount prices. AOL may not be (and arguably isn't) the best ISP out there, but at least I know that when I wake up each morning I'm not going to hear that my ISP just went belly-up. Want to take a poll of the list and see how many participants had to find anoher ISP because their's did within the last 12 months? I have my address out there on dozens of lists, and registerd on probably 100 other sites, and I can't even begin to think how I would go about notifying everyone of a change.
