Hi Listoids,
Can anyone offer me good advice on how to cut a window in a meteorite
without a lapidary saw? Can a regular table saw be modified for this use?
If not, is there anything other than a lap saw that will do a good job?
Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary,
You can always polish a window instead of cutting one. That is, unless you
would like a small end cut to go with the larger stone as well.
Have fun!

FARMINGTON - Strange lights with no obvious cause were spotted all over
northern Franklin County Tuesday night,
They were seeing, basically, a string of seven
or eight lights low in the sky, that were fixed,
All these reports were from different locations
at the same time. Maybe it was a meteorite.

I used to live at Mt. Abrahm. This is not the first time strange lights
have been seen there. I myself have seen lights hanging low on the
horizon there many times. Nobody ever has an explanation. I wonder if
its not surreptitious Air Force manuevers. At least that's always been my
theory.

Sounds like I ought to do some triangulations and head out - though we are
under a major snowstorm right now that would cover any recent falls.
Still, might be woorth the try.

Those are the only two fireballs I've seen. I believe the green color is
caused by copper content in a bolide.?... Maybe I'm off-base with that

No, the color is caused by oxygen in the atmosphere. Most low velocity
fireballs are seen as green. Faster fireballs are brighter, and the
white blackbody radiation often swamps the fainter green, although
green may still be seen in the trail.
Anyway, nothing odd in your seeing two green

Unlikely but not impossible ... because:

Many fireballs have a green hue and that is from
atmospheric oxygen as determined through spectral
analysis of meteors.
Copper abundance in meteorites is rare. I used to
think the green was probably from nickel.

Hi Elton,
Peter Brown (Univ. of Western Ontario) has typically forwarded these
DoD fireball detection reports. Here is a link to past reports:
http://aquarid.physics.uwo.ca/~pbrown/usaf.html
The most recent one was for Park Forest on March 27, 2003. Prior
to that was over Siberia on September
Peter Brown maintains a list at
http://aquarid.physics.uwo.ca/%7Epbrown/usaf.html . I've obtained some
information that isn't in his list, so I think a lot depends on who you
talk to. But overall, very little data is released.

Gary,
If you don't mind cut loss you can cut your meteorites with an inexpensive
masonry blade. The blade could be used on a table saw or a circular saw. You
can secure the rock to a piece of lumber or put it in a vise, if using a
circular saw. Just be very very careful!
