Re: [meteorite-list] Columbia Basin tektites?

2004-05-23 Thread Norman Lehrman
Marc all,

I have been corresponding with the eBay seller
offering this material. He's an honest guy who was
sold the material by a rockhound in good faith.
Typical story. Local geologist looked at them and said
they were tektites, etc, etc.

There is currently no reason to think thay are real.
The seller has offered to send some to me for exam,
and is willing to pull the auctions if they're not
tektites. (However, there's no way for the timing to
work on this offer).

For the moment, it is best (and probably--at 99.%
level, correct---) to assume that this is not what is
claimed.

I see that someone is offering newly discovered
 Columbia basin
tektites on ebay right now. Has anyone heard of
 these? I haven't
heard anything about them until now and my
 skepticism meter is pegged.

 Cheers,

Dear Mr. Fries,
I have seen the photos and would be very cautious in labeling this material as tektite related. Please also note the geology of the area??!!! I am a researcher of tektites and impact related materials as well as meteorites. If may help in the future with real tektites please let me know. Sincerely, Dirk Ross...Tokyo

Given that these alleged tektites look like
water-rolled pieces of basaltic scoria and the
Columbia Plateau is composed of basaltic volcanic
rocks, I would be extremely skeptical of these
so-called tektites. I would certainly request a
written money back guarantee of their authenticity
and documented authentication in writing of their
identity before even considering their purchase.
