Re: [meteorite-list] Ad Ebay sellers must see

2010-03-19 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Linton,

Yeah, we'll have to disagree on AstroMart. I wouldn't pee on the guy
that runs that place if he was on fire. I'd flush money down the
toliet before spending it there. I cannot begin to count the number
of times that guy has screwed over good people for minor technical
violations of the rules - which are enforced in an arbitrary manner.
For example, if Herb ran this List, 75% of the people on it would be
permanently banned - for posting more than one ad in a week or for
posting something that disagrees with Herb's politics or just because
Herb woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I can't say a single nice
thing about that guy. AstroMart was a great venue before Herb bought
it out turned it into his personal bully pulpit - to strongarm members
for donations while he poormouths how much money AM is losing, yet the
guy is multimillionaire. If he is reading this, I'd like to invite
him to come visit me so he can retrieve this can of Whoop Ass that he
forgot.

Don't be fooled by the lies, Herb still runs AM - he distanced himself
from it and made it an LLC so he and his main business (Anacortes)
will be insulated from the several lawsuits AM is facing from it's
former members. As for the peer group - suckups. One of them breaks
the rules constantly, but he stays on Herb's good side because he is a
rat and a yes man.

To any meteorite dealer reading this - feel free to go register at AM
and start posting ads. I'd bet my last dollar that Herb will run off
any meteorite dealer who shows up and tries to make a regular
presence. He'll either run them off through his flaky hostile
behavior, or he will run them off by strong-arming them for an unfair
and unrealistic amount of their sales.

And I apologize to Tony Soprano for comparing him to that dung beetle Herb.

Best regards,

MikeG

What if a seller sold an option to buy instead of the item itself? For
example, suppose you have a meteorite that you expect to go for $1,000. You
create a nice certificate, suitable for framing, that says the winner can buy
your meteorite at 10 times the price paid for the certificate. Then, you
auction the certificate. You would expect the certificate to sell for about
$100, which is what ebay would calculate their FVF on, so they get nine bucks.

Bid increments would run from 25 cents to a dollar, which equates to 2.50 and
10.00, respectively, when the option is exercised. Of course, the buyer would
get credit for the price of the certificate.

Best of all, ebay is counter-screwed.

Not really. List meteorites at both sites. They are not mutually

The impetus for using sites other than ebay has to come from dealers, not

Best

of all, there are zero fees. There is also a section for meteorites:

Though used mostly for space memorabilia, I believe an effort to move
meteorite folks over there could be done. The only problem I see is that
you
are going to miss a massive chunk of the exposure that eBay provides.

It's been tried before, most recently Eric W. tried it. (if memory

The problem is, many meteorite dealers are very competitive with each

dealers will avoid it - no matter who that dealer/owner is.

But I agree that a meteorite auction site (with traffic) would be great

 Best regards,

I have to agree with Greg here. I enjoy buying my meteorites at auction because
there are times when I can get some screaming good deals. Often well under
retail. This may not be the best thing for the dealers, because I understand
their need to make a profit to be able to bring me the material I crave. I do
buy much less often at retail, but I also feel that auctions reveal a little
more about the true market value of certain material.

I appreciate dealers who start their auctions at $0.99 because they are letting
the market dictate what the material is worth, not necessarily what they even
paid for it... I usually avoid anyone who starts their auctions at slightly
below retail.

That being said, when it comes right down to it, I'd much rather more of my
money going to the dealer than to ebay in the form of multiple fees.

I did a search for online auction sites and yes, ebay is by far the largest,
but they aren't the only one. It seems the second largest one is ebid.com, with
only about 14% of the listing as ebay. Currently ebay has 2367 listings
returned when you search meteorite while ebid only has 18...

A quick look at the fees on ebid makes it look like it might be more seller
friendly, but with the lower amount of traffic and bidders, the lower fees
might not equal to higher profits.

It might be interesting to see an experiment if some dealers started places
lots on another site and used their once a week ad to mention those listings
and see if this might become a viable option.

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad Ebay sellers must see

2010-03-17 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Eric, List,

Craigslist is a privately held company. eBay purchased
a block of shares in Craigslist from an individual share-
holder and got a seat on the Craigslist board. After eBay
launched their own free classified service to compete with
Craigslist, the Craigistas tossed them off the board by
issuing enough new shares to dilute eBay's 28-odd%
share to less than 25%, which does not qualify for a Board
seat. This is a time honored and perfectly legal technique
to squeeze one's mortal enemies out of the family. Ebay
decided to sue, and the two are now entangled in a life-or-death
legal struggle as Craigslist tries to jettison eBay:

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad Ebay sellers must see

2010-03-17 Thread Meteorites USA
The only reason Ebay ever bought a 25% share of the company (seat on the
board) was because they wanted an edge. Keep your enemies closer..

I hope Craigslist rips them a new one! Ooh, can I say that on here? ;)
Ebay is a greedy pig of a company, and it's OBVIOUS to anyone with half
a brain that their buying of 25% share of Craigslist was just a ploy to
try to gain control over Craigslist by getting inside their biggest
competition. Then when that didn't work they created their own competing
free classifieds site. Now they sue Craigslist for doing what any
smart business would do. I hope Craigslist whoops Ebay's collective
asses! Legally of course. Too bad they can't counter sue Ebay for being
greedy bastards.

Craigslist is the single largest threat to Ebay because you can't fight
freedom. Even Craigslist has to make money though, they do it by
charging for Job Real Estate listings. Pretty good business model if
you ask me. They don't allow national advertising though, which in my
mind is limiting to those who own home based businesses who would like
to expand and grow their Mom Pop business into something larger,
which in a way drives these same home businesses to look toward Ebay for
national advertising. Frankly in my opinion Ebay is stupid for not
seeing that. If they could have worked it out with Craigslist instead of
trying to bulldoze them, I think they could have made a great team. But
alas, they have competing philosophies. Craigslist is all about freedom,
and Ebay is about profit. I know somewhere there's a happy middle ground
where both could have prospered, but not now.

You go Craigslist! ;)

Eric

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad Ebay sellers must see

2010-03-17 Thread Greg Hupe

Walter,

I am definitely not trying to start a Pro-eBay war here. I simply did not
agree with GregC's specific comment. Everyone here knows everyone sets some
auction items with a higher start price than 99 cents, I am no different
(neither are you). No big deal...

As Richard pointed out, it is the Buyer/Bidder who gets the chance to set
their own price when something starts at 99 cents (or a penny!). Nothing
evil happening here! Just eBay and different ways people wish to offer
goods. Do you think I would put a $30,000.00 lunar slice on eBay at 99
cents? I may be crazy, but NOT that crazy!!

So, if anyone who wishes to set their own price, starting a 99 cents or 99
dollars, bid as you wish! Nobody is forcing your bid finger down on the
keyboard!!

Greg

2010-03-17 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi List,

Fleabay has been a hell for sellers and a heaven for buyers for a long
time now. I have stopped 99% of my selling on eBay because I can sell
the same items on my own website for zero fees. But, I still buy
stuff on eBay, including supplies like gemjars, bubble mailers,
shipping boxes, and shipping labels. I also pounce on the occasional
meteorite deal and have snagged a few of Adam's offerings in recent
weeks. I used to really like the eBay atmosphere back in 1999 when I
first started out there, but eBay has since done everything it can to
enforce a corporate-mindset on the membership, and now the sense of
community is gone. It's just another anonymous row of quasi-retail
storefronts and you can even identify the other shoppers standing next
to you while you are shopping. This is what happens when something
good is taken over by a bunch of suit-wearing, country-club
multimillionaires who don't give a damn about the product or the
service, just the amount of green streaming in. Unless the
shareholders mutiny, expect more the same from eBay in the future.

Having said that, I do have a single .99 cent auction up right now -
the first piece of NWA 6026 ever offered on fleabay. Feel free to bid
on it, or ignore it, or watch it -

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=290414451908

Some other eBay-like sites :

Bonanzle - better than eBay. No listing fees, small final value fee
only when an item sells. You get a free storefront plus live chat
bundled in. Downside - not quite as much traffic ebay, but still
pretty decent. I actually make a few regular sales there - and I have
staked my claim on it as the biggest meteorite dealer Bonanzle.
Until one of you folks set up shop over there and knock me off my
throne, I am the meteorite king of Bonanzle. LOL

Etsy - an arts-and-crafts version of eBay, dominated by artists and
mostly female sellers. You won't sell many meteorites there, but you
can sell some as crafting-supplies. I've sold some meteorite dust and
cuttings over there for artists to use in their works.

iOffer - auction site. I tried it, didn't like it.

Finally, when you folks are tired of getting strong-armed by eBay,
check out High-Wire ecommerce stores. It's where I host my store.
You pay a low monthly flat fee to have a store - no listing fees, no
final value fees, no percentages. You don't pay anything for sales -
sell a dollar or sell a million dollars and the fee is the same. I
love it. Caveat - you must be able to drive traffic to your store for
a service like this to replace eBay in your sales. I can drive
traffic to my site, so my sales are good. I cannot promise similar
results for everyone, but I don't miss eBay at all when it comes to
selling. If anyone reading this signs up for High-Wire (used to be
called Buy it Sell it), use my referral link to sign up because I'll
get a kickback! :)

on it, or ignore it, or watch it -

 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=290414451908

It seems that the solution to these high ebay fees is a no brainer. With so
many meteorite dealers on the met-list, all of you should get together and have
your auctions on a new site. An existing site or create your own. Possibly
create a Meteorite Dealers Association that runs it and keeps it free of
bogus sellers. I'm sure that a fee smaller than ebay's would pay for the site's
maintenance. The possibility's of such a site would be endless.

This auction site already exists and has been around for a long time. Best
of all, there are zero fees. There is also a section for meteorites:

www.Astro-Auction.com

Though used mostly for space memorabilia, I believe an effort to move
meteorite folks over there could be done. The only problem I see is that you
are going to miss a massive chunk of the exposure that eBay provides.

This auction site already exists and has been around for a long time. Best
of all, there are zero fees. There is also a section for meteorites:

 www.Astro-Auction.com

Though used mostly for space memorabilia, I believe an effort to move
meteorite folks over there could be done. The only problem I see is that
 you
are going to miss a massive chunk of the exposure that eBay provides.

 Hi Jim,

It's been tried before, most recently Eric W. tried it. (if memory
 serves me correctly)

The problem is, many meteorite dealers are very competitive with each
other, and I think if a dealer owns/runs the auction site, some other
dealers will avoid it - no matter who that dealer/owner is.

But I agree that a meteorite auction site (with traffic) would be great.

Hi Walter,

I agree 100% with you. At least 50% of the meteorite listings on ebay come from
the people on this forum. If they can put there differences and ego's aside
long enough to agree on an auction site, it would be to there benefit. The ebay
meteorite buyers would find the new auction site. It would only work if enough
sellers agree to a new site. News travels fast in the meteorite community.

Hi Mike,

For years I was the only meteorite seller at Astro Auction Kim Poor (the

I can't tell you how much Canyon Diablo I sold there.

I informed a few dealers Astro Auction a few years ago but they never took

Ironically Kim and Novaspace Galleries (the brick and morter store behind
Astro Auction) are located in of all places, Tucson.

Not too long ago I mentioned Cloudynights.com as an alternative to ebay.
Totally free of fees. The time it takes to list an item is 30 seconds to

Not really. List meteorites at both sites. They are not mutually

The impetus for using sites other than ebay has to come from dealers, not

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad Ebay sellers must see

2010-03-17 Thread Meteorites USA

Hi Walter, List,

No matter how much time and effort you put into building it, they will
NOT come to any site like they do to Ebay, unless...

Perhaps the best way is free, fast, secure, it has to have the base and
it needs to be easy. Ebay didn't just start from a website, there was
money behind it. The only way to make something happen without money is
to provide a motivation. I have created two websites one auction site
and one classifieds site. The auction site was not free, the classifieds
site was.

The classifieds site saw much more traffic and popularity, and there
were certain marketing and online advertising techniques I used to
promote the site that worked great and allowed it to be ranked in the
top 10 within a month or so. It grew VERY fast.

No offense, but the sites you mention are not new and there are tons of
free sites out there. People have been trying to compete with Ebay for a
long time. The only one who has had real success is Craigslist. They are
the single largest threat to Ebay's market share.

If you were to build a site that they will come to, then that site I
believe must be cheaper than Ebay, offer the same or comparable traffic
or in marketing terms reach, as Ebay does, and at the same time make
it EASY for people to post their items for sale. There's one thing I
know that will accomplish ALL of that. That's a free classifieds site,
with certain categories that can be charged for just like the Craigslist
model.

Take it from me, it's not about building it. It's about offering
something of value. All the sites you mentioned have not come anywhere
close to the reach that Ebay gives, to do that you need free and easy
value. Most people will have no problems paying even a small fee, but
you must make it fair or people will not participate.

The issue is not really price or even benefits. It's about how EASY
something is to do. If any site could offer the same reach as Ebay but
cheaper, it will most likely be a success.

Regards,
Eric

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad Ebay sellers must see

2010-03-17 Thread Meteorites USA

Hi Walter,

Understood, but I was simply being more general on purpose. Where do you
advertise. Not all meteorite people will flock to one particular site.
With the myriad of other sites out there, to get the reach that ebay
provides you'd have to list your items for sale on ALL of the remaining
top 10 auction sites to get the reach ebay would give you. Your sales
would suffer, and it would be a nightmare to keep organized.

My point is not that I'm saying build another ebay, I'm saying build
something better. That would be a phenomenal achievement, but it would
be worth the money to do in my opinion. Ebay is ripe for an
international competitor. I'm saying that because Craigslist, though
it is international, you're only allowed to advertise your items for
sale locally. Imagine if there were a site where local listings were
free, but only charged a small fee for regional, national, and
international advertising. I guess that skirts the philosophy of a
free site somewhat though, but not everyone needs to advertise
worldwide. You also have to deal with abusers who post illegal
offensive ads too. How do you manage that?

I know what you're saying, you want to use what's already there, but I
believe if what is there now could work then it would have worked
already. ;)

You asked me ...At a free site, could you lose money? ...

I don't think so, I have a model and have run the numbers and it should
work well, and it will even turn a respectable profit while still
offering FREE advertising to sellers. A win/win in my opinion.

Look, I'm not saying not to use what's there now, ebid.com and many
other auction sites are out there. I've never used Astro-Auctions but
they look cool for a specialized site. There's really a whole lot of
competition out there in the auction website market. Everyone wanted to
be the next Ebay until they actually started an auction site and saw how
much a of pain in the rear it is to run one. When you realize that, you
specialize or make it free. You would actually be able to run a
successful site AND keep it free by offering free LOCAL listings,
supplemented by advertising revenue i.e. small fees on certain
categories and regional, national, and international listings.

This is why Craigslist works so well. It's simple and free. KISS! This
is what makes Ebay scared!

My site www.spacifieds.com was a test that worked fairly well. It was a
trial run of sorts and garnered a lot of interest in a short time. It
became a top 10 website in it's category in less than 2 months, but even
at that people didn't use it much because the reach was nothing
comparable to ebay. Even ALL the top 10 auction websites combined don't
equal to the traffic ebay gets.

In my opinion this is a perfect time for there to be a competitor arrive
for ebay... Craigslist probably won't do it because of their philosophy.
But there is room for another big site, one that combines the best of
both worlds.

Regards,
Eric

There are no online sites the can provide the reach that Ebay does. Ebay
knows this, hence their overinflated fees and idiotic policies which are
driving away sellers.

No sellers + Nothing to buy = Less money for Ebay! Seems rather counter
intuitive to me. I say Ebay should raise their fees to 50% and get it
over with. At least then they'll go bankrupt faster and people will be
motivated to create an alternative.

Spacifieds.com is a free option. I created this site a while back and
its been on pause for a while.

http://www.spacifieds.com/

I know there's some other auction sites, but nothing like Ebay. Yahoo
shut it's auctions down a long time ago, and Amazon is mainly books and
stuff and their fees are expensive. I don't know of any alternative
that can really compete with Ebay except Craigslist and Ebay owns 25% of
that company too.

Oh well...

Eric

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad Ebay sellers must see

2010-03-16 Thread Greg Catterton
Ebay has great reach. I will be using my website more and trying (as I have
been, this fee raise has been known for months)
Its really bad, will cause the buyers to pay more due to sellers marking up
price to match the new cut ebay wants.

There are no online sites the can
provide the reach that Ebay does. Ebay knows this, hence
their overinflated fees and idiotic policies which are
 driving away sellers.

No sellers + Nothing to buy = Less money for Ebay! Seems
rather counter intuitive to me. I say Ebay should raise
their fees to 50% and get it over with. At least then
they'll go bankrupt faster and people will be motivated to
 create an alternative.

Spacifieds.com is a free option. I created this site a
while back and its been on pause for a while.

I know there's some other auction sites, but nothing like
Ebay. Yahoo shut it's auctions down a long time ago, and
Amazon is mainly books and stuff  and their fees are
expensive. I don't know of any alternative that can really
compete with Ebay except Craigslist and Ebay owns 25% of
 that company too.

 Oh well...

 Eric

What online auction sites are you dealers using or
 considering using?
