Re: [meteorite-list] China Now Hosts The World's Largest Gem and Mineral Show
Exactly Peter, There are political motives behind the show in Changsha/chenzhou. It is government owned. The local governments are trying to get an airport built at Chenzhou. They wanted those hundreds of thousands of visitors to spur demand for an airport and development. The hundreds of thousands of visitors were all local peasants. None of them knew a thing about what they were looking at, much less have interest in spending a single yuan. Certainly there were buyers there and a lot of money was made, but none of that had anything to do with the visitor numbers. I think 1000 people would have been far better. There is also no way to gauge Tucson attendance. The only number they use is the ticket sales at the main show at the convention center. When that is open I'm ready closed. There are hundreds of venues all over the city. The song "Don't cry for me Argentina" comes to mind. We do quite well thank you very much Adam:) Michael Farmer Sent from my iPad > On Jan 25, 2016, at 2:19 AM, Peter Davidson via Meteorite-list >wrote: > > Dear List members > > I would be very wary of the figures quoted here. Re: [meteorite-list] China Now Hosts The World's Largest Gem and Mineral Show
Dear List members I would be very wary of the figures quoted here. As someone on the list has already mentioned, the shows at Changsha (now gone forever), Chenzhou and elsewhere are largely attended by locals and students bussed in by the Chinese government to artificially boost numbers. A number of prominent mineral dealers that I know, who have the knowledge and experience of mineral shows World-wide, are all very scathing about the Chinese shows. It may well be that once these shows have been running for a number of years (like Tucson and Munich) then thinks will settle down and trust between seller and buyer may eventually be built up. My recent experiences of trying to get the Chinese to organise an international mineralogy conference have proved to be one of the most frustrating periods of my professional life. China may have made many great strides in some fields, but are hide-bound by politics. The result of all this is that the conference will probably not go ahead. Poor organisation and political interference/favouritism are among the main culprits. I am a relative Tucson newbie (this will be my fifth visit), and the city can be a difficult place to reach from Scotland, but it is still (along with Munich) the place to go to catch up with old friends, meet new ones and most importantly see some great specimens! I would not be too worried about attendance figures. The main show, where I have my small display, is still pretty busy on all the days that it is open and the hotels and smaller shows around the city still seem to attract a lot of people. Long may it continue. Hope to see a few of you there. Re: [meteorite-list] China Now Hosts The World's Largest Gem and Mineral Show
Hi All, Tucson is the greatest gem and mineral show in the world. There are so many reasons why. The problem is non disclosure of an imitation or "fake", not selling one. Only when something is sold to deceive does it become a problem. Meteorites have been sold as rare falls when they are not. Sapphires have been sold as "Kashmir" when they are not. Pure deception. Lab grown emeralds make beautiful jewelry. Lab grown crystals can be astonishing. Making a reproduction meteorite or dinosaur as a cast is an accepted and valued practice. Making green glass in your kitchen and selling it as a tektite is deception. None are the real deal from nature and some are made in dishonest greed. The other is sold to show wonder and amazement. Know the product Know your source Examine closely Ask questions Buy wisely If one doesn't know what they are looking at, they can be tricked. It's happened to the best. Re: [meteorite-list] China Now Hosts The World's Largest Gem and Mineral Show
Numbers can be deceiving. One must ask what the percentage of vendors (merchants) hosting booths or showrooms at both China and Tucson events offer meteorites and impact related artifacts, and of them, what percentage are authentic? Tucson may lose the distinction of being the largest gem and mineral show in the world, but for the interests and purposes of those subscribed to this list, it will never lose the honor of being the BEST show on earth for the meteorite obsessed! gary > On Jan 23, 2016, at 8:07 AM, Raremeteorites via Meteorite-list >wrote: > > Dear List Members, > > I was shocked to hear that the Tucson Gem and Mineral show is no longer the > world's largest. Re: [meteorite-list] China Now Hosts The World's Largest Gem and Mineral Show
Hi Anne and all, I can remember it being larger in the early 1990's compared to the shows after 2002. I'd multiply finding a parking spot by 3 back then to now. My opinion and memory isn't always right but it was larger then. Most people back then made reservations a year ahead of time in order to stay. I found a motel about 40 miles away that I stayed in for several years straight. One could use the amount of income that takes place during the show to come up with some sort of attendance taking place. Also the city got greedy some time back and was thinking of putting a tax on the shows. There was talk of moving it to Vegas then. The city rethought it's taxing the shows after they were threatened with the show moving. Some of the gem shows did move so some loss of income and people. I prefer Tucson as it is a nice location and hope the show doesn't ever move. Best! --AL Mitterling Mitterling Meteorites Quoting Anne Black: Frankly Al, I have been going to the Tucson show since the year 2000, and it seems to be just as busy, crowded now as it was then. I hear the same complaints about parking. I would love to know how whomever came up with this number managed to count people. There are shows all over the city, and entrance is free, people wander in and out of hotels, tents,. There are no tickets to buy, no one counting people come in anywhere. So how did whomever get to that number? Curious minds Anne M. Re: [meteorite-list] China Now Hosts The World's Largest Gem and Mineral Show
I was an exhibitor at all these shows in China. In Chenzhou last year the government ordered all Business to close down and all people had paid holidays and free admission to the show. Attendance was mandatory. When the government in China orders you to attend, you attend. One out of every 10-15000 of those people may have bought something. China shows have 1% the buyers Tucson has. Nice try, but why people that don't even attend either show feel the need to talk is beyond me. Hi Adam and List, Biggest? Maybe. Best? No. From what I have heard about Chinese rock shows - many of the specimens are bogus. Fake Moldavite. Fake fossils. Fake meteorites. I realize this problem is not restricted to Chinese shows, but China has made an art-form out of specimen forgery. I'd have to drag a team of experts with me and have them test any piece I was thinking about buying. Re: [meteorite-list] China Now Hosts The World's Largest Gem and Mineral Show
Doesn't surprise me at all. Counterfeit medications placed on the American market and baby food filled with sawdust are a few examples that come to mine. I had a Chinese made hydrologic floor jack disintegrate while I was under a car and spray what smelt like rancid fish-oil all over my coveralls. I think they recycled expired fish oil by finding another use for it. Luckily, the safety stands held up. I had a friend throw a beer bottle into a brand-new Chinese made cooler and it punched a hole through the inner layer exposing shredded Chinese newspapers used for insulation. This all sounds funny but my mother-in-law almost died due to counterfeit medications placed on the American market. Needless to say, I only purchase heavy duty products manufactured by firms in reputable countries. It is amazing what greed can do to product quality and authenticity. I will keep on eye for casting marks on iron meteorites. Never buy electronics that say, "Genuine Chrome Plated Plastic Knobs" or furniture made from "Genuine Pleather." Re: [meteorite-list] China Now Hosts The World's Largest Gem and Mineral Show
Greetings all, Wondering what the attendance of the Tucson show was in the 1990's. If I had to guess I'd say 200,000 or more. I can remember it being so much larger than past years I have been able to attend. I remember trying to find parking spots for a half hour or more. You learn to walk to places rather than drive down the road a bit or you would hunt for another parking spot for quite a while. 9-11 changed all of that. --AL Mitterling Mitterling Meteorites Quoting Raremeteorites via Meteorite-list: Dear List Members, I was shocked to hear that the Tucson Gem and Mineral show is no longer the world's largest.
