2022-02-02 Thread Rodrigo Casula via Meteorite-list
Hi guys!
Hope you are all well.
This meteor fell in my region, South East of Brazil, it was really bright
and I watched it live. The attached footage was captured by a surveillance
camera 15km from where I was at the time ( I was closer to were the meteor
"fell") . I know the direction it fell but how to calculate the distance?
Is that even possible?
By the footage would be possible to determine if some of it actually hit
the ground or was completely burnt?
I've been dreaming about finding one meteorite for ages and this is the
closest I will ever be I think!!
My WhatsApp Number +5527997794460.
I will very much appreciate any helpful information!!
Many thanks!!

I only trust MetSoc recognized laboratories and peer-reviewed papers.

I have an unconfirmed and undocumented 41.8 gram "Black Beauty" if
anybody is interested. It is yours for a heavily discounted price of
only $80,000.00. You only have to supply an 8.36 gram type specimen and
wait if you want to make it official or you can simply take the Moroccan
dealer's word for it.

Adam,
Since you keep suggesting that it was Greg's doing, and not yours...

"The Hupé Collection" self-paired a medium and a fine octahedrite.
Different bandwidths, different structures, different types of
inclusions. One was a fresh, sculpted, fusion-crusted iron. The
other was a round, weathered lump. The photos on ebay were enough to
tell they were different. "The Hupé Collection" said they were the
same.

https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=17885

https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=33524

These mistakes are surfacing on the POD, from well known collectors who
*trusted you.* With "Hupé Collection" labels that are *wrong.*

That is indefensible.

You never even reached out to Bernd and the other buyers to let them
know of the mistake, after you knew of it? Or did Bernd miss your
email?

In response, you're "accusing me" of...making 100% certain that my
samples were what they were, via SEM. Most of the material that I
didn't keep went to labs, and they were presumably grateful to get NWA
7034 at less than a third of what other sellers were charging.

None of my material was misrepresented. Not one milligram.

Pointing out that I *got it right* isn't exactly a good rebuttal.
Especially when you're okay with other scientists doing nothing more
than *eyeballing* your own stones to claim they're paired. I
literally did more to verify my NWA 7034 than you did to verify your
NWA 1110.

Oh, and the Nom. Com. essentially did away with type specimen
requirements for paired DCA meteorites some time ago.

Read the rules. Section 7.1 (g).

https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/docs/nc-guidelines.pdf

If you want to get a new piece of [anything paired] approved, all you
need is data. No type specimen is required.

You say that self-pairing is bad. I point out that you messed it up.
In response, you point out that I paired some material correctly, as
though it's somehow the same or worse. And you push "rules" that
no one follows -- and that don't even exist.

It's still -

An obvious fake!

The last I checked Kapoeta was a Howardite, not an Ordinary Chondrite.
The crust and matrix are wrong. The presence of numerous chondrules
excludes it. Oxidation halos around metal and the lack of basalt clasts
indicate, even to a complete novice, that this specimen is bogus. The
real Kapoeta was recovered within minutes of hitting the ground and real
examples are near pristine.

Here is the Meteoritcal Bulletin entry for Kapoeta:

https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?sea=Kapoeta=namescontains=50=ge==All=name=All=All===0=Normal%20table=12251

Remember, that one bad specimen can bring an entire collection into
question. It would interesting to see the complete chain of custody on
this piece.

The only meteorite class named for a meteorite hunter that recovered it
(right?), We could've been calling pallasites krasnojarskites for their
type specimen as is the overall scientific convention ...

Paul, fantastic job with MPOD as has been mentioned by other kind folks before

Mendy you are really reputable, a gentleman, and a great scientist, too. This
is an (uncommonly acquired) superbly prepared large full slice which must be
such a treat to see in person. Large grain size and stark contrast in the
matrix makes it a really interesting eucrite. Also high in titanium which for
me conjures images of a mining base and space-faring outpost to be built based
on Vesta one of these days Not to mention that the iron is so nickel free ...
like happened on Earth?! ;-)

I appreciate you, and all who make the effort, and bear the expense, to
classify these incredible stones and the opportunity to get MPOD thanks to kind
folks like Suzanne and Paul who make the time to brighten so many people's days.

Doug,

You are absolutely correct.

Steve Witt handled that second stone and I had not updated my records to
reflect that the classification had to be split for the two stones. Based on
visual observations, there was at the time a (small) concern that they may be
different. Final classification did prove that these were the same and thus
paired, even though 7989 is listed as a polymict eucrite and the 8588 as an
eucrite. So, my apologies to you.

To be very clear, this mixup is my fault and I will update Suzanne and other
clients as well. The website has already been updated as well to reflect the
updated information.

Thank you for the keen eye!

Best,

Mendy

Is this from stone #1 (510g), or stone #2 (1635g) which Steve Witt was involved
with?

Your website listed the 16.7g slice coming from the stone #2 and described:

"New Eucrite: NWA 7989 a beautiful multi-colored shock melt eucrite
(provisional) TKW = 2145g (510g stone 1, 1635g stone 2)

Stone 2: Slices for Sale at $27.50/g: (all slices expertly cut & prepared my
Marlin Cilz)"

Steve Witt held the 1635g stone according to the Meteoritical Bulletin,
classified as NWA 8588.

TKW of NWA 7989 is only 510g.
NWA 8588 TKW is 1635g.

The above TKWs according to the Meteoritical Bulletin. Accept my deep apology
if I have missed something.

is an (uncommonly acquired) superbly prepared large full slice which must be
such a treat to see in person.

Kindest wishes
Doug

Hi Sonny and all,

Yep, Little Debbie branded treats were a life preserver, even if less sugar and
fiber and more protein will be in the pack for next time! I really appreciate
your comments Sonny and bet you could relate to what was running through my
head there, probably more than me :-)

As I found mine, I learned you were in Texas at the latest strewnfield, rolling
the dice and busting your butt. I still expected you to show up with a
volunteer fire brigade to show up any minute!

Best luck,
Doug

I'd wish him a speedy recovery, but given the amount of time he's already been

Regarding size, shape, the few well defined regmaplypts and above all
the impressive impacts marks incuding the adherent soil - a marvellous
Bensour stone. Congratulations.

Hi,

I have always enjoyed the inspiration for Mr. Harry Wittlinger's copy;

the cover of "The History of Meteoritics and Key Meteorite Collection:

Thanks,

What a nice find! You do not see to many Franconia meteorites that size
any more. I think it might be tough for anyone to find that large of a
meteorite in the Franconia strewn field today.

That piece of Sylacauga would not be from the stone that hit Ms Hodges, rather
the stone in the Smithsonian museum which was found by man on a road nearby,
the second stone.
The famous woman-hitting stone is in a local museum in Alabama, un smashed and
uncut thankfully, with only a core sample removed.

The finnish and swedish text above the Luotolax oriented stone from
NHM, Helsinki reads:

In Savitipale one heard on December 13 1813 at 10 o'clock, a thunderlike
rumbling

and saw black clouds that moved fast. Numerous meteoritestones fell down
in the field and at the frozen lake. This peace found its place by the general-
governor F. Steinheil. The sample's weight is 258 grams. Notice the black-
shining fused crust!

Clear skies,

Thank you Regine, I am glad you like this meteorite.

As for the text, I am sorry, but if your French is bad, my scientific
background is limited. The way I understand it is that they are alike,
just like like Mt Tazerzait and Baszkowka are alike. Maybe pieces of
the same asteroid? Another form of pairing.

I am hoping that one of the meteoriticist on the List will jump in and
give us a much more complete explanation.

Amazing piece Paul, Zagami is a very underpriced Martian fall, as rare as it
gets.
I have some great pieces which will be on display at the Tucson show. Zagami is
becoming impossible to get ahold of, the main mass has been cut down as far as
Bob want's to go, so I highly doubt any more will be coming up anytime soon.
