Makes me remember the “Weeds” episode of Creepshow, also known as “The Lonesome
Death of Jordy Verrell”. If you have not seen it, check out what happens when
Jordy touches the meteorite!

Re: [meteorite-list] Toxic Giant Hogweed Spreading - Warning to Meteorite Collectors

2018-07-03 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list
Graham's so right, it's hard to miss due to its size.

Common hog weed which is rather 'uncommon' here in Michigan gets to a maximum
of 6 feet tall, it truly is stunning with it's big tabletop size flowers and
huge leaves. Giant hog weed, invasive here in the states, is huge! By mid
summer the plants are 6 - 12 feet tall and are easily identified. I can't speak
accurately for the rest of the country but here in Mich the Giant variety is
extremely rare. I have 5 trucks on the road all summer long, out ridding the
good people of our state of their poison ivy and other noxious and/or invasive
plants. In all the years doing this we've only seen giant hog weed once.

So if you find yourself out looking for a piece of the Hamburg meteorite don't
worry too much about hog weed, but be very aware of the ubiquitous poison ivy!

Just learn to recognize it...which is pretty easy because of it's size...it is
a notifiable plant here in the UK but never thought of it as any more of a
problem than loads of other poisonous plants and fungi I see near here...learn
to live with nature I sayand teach your kids to do the same, just as I was

Re: [meteorite-list] Toxic Giant Hogweed Spreading - Warning to Meteorite Collectors

2018-07-03 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Giant Hogweed is definitely no joke.

I saw a child once in an ER who had lost sight in his left eye after getting
the sap on his face. Also it’s very hard to get rid of if it’s growing on your
property. An expensive clean out, like many invasive species.

A good one to watch out for when out hunting.
