Try to recreate the formats in the miktex console -- probably user
mode.

Yes -- the problem is with the newest 'graphics' package. After (1) backing up
my MikTeX directories (which you should *always* do before any update), I (2)
installed all the updates, *except* 'graphics. All worked fine. But, if you then
