Life is a program that simulates cells/organisms multiplying and dying.
The patterns generated are interesting and can be esthetically pleasing.
It was popular in the early 1980s.  Output is ASCII, no fancy 3D graphics
card needed.  

There is, of course, a version of life in emacs.  Try: M-x life
