Unable to download bsd-jdk15-patches-9.tar to build jdk-1.5 on OpenBSD4.6-current as of 23 Nov. 2009

2009-11-29 Thread Donald Cooley
Hi,
I am trying to build jdk 1.5 on OpenBSD. I have tried to download
bsd-jdk15-patches-9.tar.bz2 from
http://www.eyesbeyond.com/freebsddom/java/jdk15.html per
the make instructions. The site reports a '500 error'.
I have searched for the patch elsewhere on the Internet
and I am unable to find it. I am hoping that someone can send
me the patch bsd-jdk15-patches-9.tar.bz2 or tell me where else I can
download it.

Regards,
Donald Cooley

You didn't run trace, why not? You don't want the bug fixed, do you.

I am sorry, there may be something special about my so to say remote
java-based consoles but after they went to the ddb prompt system didnt
respond to the keyboard anymore.

Now i tried harder, i experimented with another, quite oldish computer i
have better access to which is used at home and has some services on it,
it is i386 with 4.6 patched until 003 and 003 included. During this
experiment the other side of the pfsync+ipsec end was unpatched 4.6
amd64 running under vmware (but i think you dont want to hear about that
end much).

The sequence of events seems to be the same, dmesg starting with trace
and ps output follows here

 Hi all,

I am wondering if I could make the console display CJK character sets.
From what I've searched, wscons doesn't support Unicode at least in NetBSD,
though I wonder if it is a similar case in OpenBSD.

As the console on most architectures supported by OpenBSD uses the textmode
of the hardware, only the capabilities of texmode ara available.

One of the restrictions of hardware textmode is the number of characters
you can display at one time on the console which is normally limited to 256
(or 512 on some hardware although I doubt OpenBSD supports this)

In short. No you can't.

The documents I process involve major eastern Asian characters, some of
which appear in one document. I know I could handle it well enough with
proper locale setting, fonts, and X. But I frankly don't like X and
prefer non-X applications, as most of my work done in CLI or TUI, exactly,
emacs-nox11. I guess this could not be circumvented by simple setting
 Lang, LC_CTYPE or alike.

If you want to use those charater sets you need a bit-map addressable
screen and the apropriate fonts to display those glyphs.

X offers those features.
If you just start an 'xterm -u8' you get your program prompt from where
you can run your CLI/TUI applications just as you would on your
console but with the possibility of more glyphs at the same time.

There is nothing in X that requires you to run bloated graphical
applications or an over the top graphical environment.

squid + squidclamav + squidGuard[Zombie].

2009-11-29 Thread Alessandro Baggi

Hi all.
I've a problem with squid + squidclamav + squidGuard. squidGuard process
become a Zombie Process. This problem comes with OpenBSD 4.5 and 4.6.

Then, squid without other redirector...works fine. If I set url_rewrite
program /usr/local/bin/squidGuard, squid works fine.
And now the problem. If I try to use squid, squidclamav and squidGuard
together, all squidguard processes die. Then I set url_rewrite program
/usr/local/bin/squidclamav and in squidclamav.conf I set squidguard
/usr/local/bin/squidGuard.

With this configuration, squid works, squidclamav works but squidguard dies.

Re: Unicode implementation in console?

2009-11-29 Thread Hou, Ruoyu
The problem I found with X is however irrelevant with those resource-hogging eye
candies, but X itself. In most occasions I choose not to install X in order to
free up say one or two hundred megabytes, just like some genuine server
administrators whose intentions differ from mine. In real world I must admit
that I still use some applications that can't live without X.

Some problems lie beyond X. For example, when I mount an msdos file system, CJK
characters in file names would all be unrecognizable. This is not a bug, but
obviously a pain in ass. In Linux and recent version of FreeBSD this could be
solve by assigning proper charset to mount command and of course, access in
xterm or alike. However, I didn't find similar solution in OpenBSD's
mount_msdos/ntfs function (please correct me if I'm wrong). This would be a
trouble when I need to do some cross-platform job.

Actually. in old msdos age, we use some CJK platform to display and input those
ideographs. That's why I guess maybe a not-so=complicated patch work would do
the same thing to my own need. A Google search hits zhcon, a CJK-capable virtual
console developed for Linux and then ported to FreeBSD. It is kind of a loadable
CJK platform with built-in input method. I will test if it can be ported to my
OpenBSD machine.

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

There is nothing in X that requires you to run bloated graphical
applications or an over the top graphical environment.

problem?
I've had the same problem, except I also get in the logs /bsd: file:

Try sysctl kern.nfiles or pstat -T to see how many open file descriptors
you have. With either redirector, but not both, I end up with a sane
amount (300-400 in my installation) but 3-4k with both, and setting
kern.maxfiles to 32768 or some really high number seems only to slightly
delay this.

Just to be clear, 'sudo su' works for newly added users who are in the
wheel group, but su by itself does not. Apologies for the confusion.

 Brad

That's funny, because I followed your directions and I can't
reproduce. I'm running 4.6 GENERIC -release. You did relogin after
changing the passwords and groups right?

Yes, when I type su as user test, I get Sorry outputted to the
console and I see BAD SU test to root on /dev/ttyC0 in
/var/log/authlog. I'm doing this locally on a laptop.

When I type sudo su as user test, I get a root shell. In /etc/sudoers
I have the %wheel line for no password uncommented.

It's official. I'm an idiot. Was using the user passwd with su.
Forgive me. su works fine.

Hello

I have some strange behavior with su in openbsd 4.6,
I have two users root and test, test user is in wheel group with
usermod -G
wheel test, when i try to be root with su -
I have the sorry message and in the /var/log/authlog I have :
BAD SU test to root on /dev/ttyp0

I'm sure about the root password, cat from /etc/group show me that
test user
is in wheel group.
If I remove the test user and recreate it whith adduser and specify
to add
test user in the wheel group I have the same behavior
If I try to get root privilege with su root - I have the same result.

What I do wrong or missing.

Hmm. Try the obvious first: what does groups say about your test user?

Also, the new group does not apply to an already logged in user. Use
id(1) to see if you are who you seem to be.

I do some more test, if I use the test user directly on the main console
everythink is ok
I can connect with test user and I can do an su - and be root

If I do the same think from a linux term after ssh t...@bazard I can
connect with user test but I cannot be gain root privilege with an su -

If I run id from linux term after an ssh t...@bazard I have this :
$ id
uid=1000(test) gid=1000(test) groups=1000(test), 0(wheel)
$
If I run id directly from main console I have the same thing :
$ id
uid=1000(test) gid=1000(test) groups=1000(test), 0(wheel)
$

Then I must say I _really_ think you have an issue typing the password,
as in different keyboard layout or so.

I'm really Sorry, You right, I'm stupid.
I have a fr keyboard and I'm under vmware, I don't no why my Fr keyboard
in vmware console cannot use the Alt Gr key.

Really Sorry
Phil

Opera on bsd.mp kernel

2009-11-29 Thread Predrag Punosevac
Dear All,

This is not really a question but an observation that I made which
might be useful to others so I would like to share with you.

On several occasions people have noticed that Opera is freezing on
bsd.mp kernel. Some people were quick to blame OpenBSD multi-treading
code and memory management. I claim that is not the case.

I was just able to run Opera 9.64 on 4.5 i-386 stable using bsd.mp
kernel for many hours without any problems.

The trick to do the following. When you start Opera for the first time
by default you will be redirected to Opera web-site and the browser
will freeze within 10-20 second. Kill it manually by listing associated
processes. Then restart the Opera and this time the browser will ask you
before starting if you want to start from the last time, home page, or
blank page. Chose to start with the blank page. Go immediately to
preferences and open advance preferences. Go to History. I have turned
off memory cache and use only disk cache which I chose to empty on
exit. Then I went to content and the only thing I am enabling is
animated images and Java Script. I also accept cookies only from sites
I visit and delete them when I exit Opera. I also mask appearance as
Firefox. I personally have disabled Wan password manager.

With those couple choices I was able to run Opera couple hours without
a hitch. I did NOT use http proxy!!! I have not tried to use its email
client or IRC client so you will have to play with it and see if it
works. I have no interest in Opera e-mail client am I am a happy user of
Hairloom mailx. I almost never use IRC but when I use it is usually sic
IRC client.

Best,
Predrag Punosevac

P.S. Hopefully people will be now able to use Opera on multicore
machines which run i386. Note also that Opera 10.10 in current has
build in spell checker so it is a complete solution for people who
are disillusioned with Firefox.

Thanks a lot. I've honestly always had issues with Opera on OpenBSD, but I
expected it was just due to problems in Linux emulation.
