The USB controller died on me (had to remove the PCI card to boot the machine)
so the earlier problems were probably related to that.

Only problem is, it's really hard to figure out if the RAID controllers are
compatible (e.g. Perc 3 vs. OpenBSD Perc 5); can anyone share any
recommendations?
Avoid the Adaptec ones which are conveniently also marketed as PERC.
Anything = PERC4 should be AMI/LSI based and works.
The PERC3 DC/DCL/SC should work too. Again make sure you don't end up
with something adaptec (they do have different designations but my
memory fails me).
