pf+FTP external interface only

2010-11-04 Thread onteria
I'm currently working on locking down one of my machines with pf.
Right now it has a default deny policy and FTP is causing issues. I did
a search on how to around FTP oddities using ftp-proxy, but from what I
understand this requires an internal interface to work, which this
system doesn't have since it's behind a netgear router.

Is there something like ftp-proxy for external interface only setups
that uses anchors to rewrite rules on the fly?

Another option I thought of is making a wrapper script around ftp or
whatever the command line client was that would take in the hostname as
the first argument, and the rest of the arguments would be passed to
whatever the client was. The first call to the script would use pfctl to
add the server to a table, which would then have a lenient ruleset for
any FTP server in that table. Once the command is done running, pfctl
would remove that server from the table. I'm wondering if this would be
a good idea.

PS: Yes, I plan to setup an OpenBSD router at some point so this
doesn't become an issue. Unfortunately I'm saving up for something at
the moment, so even a cheap router off Ebay is out of the question right
now :)

Re: Printing with HP laserjet p1606dn and LPD, hpijis: unable to set device=

2010-11-04 Thread Abel Abraham Camarillo Ojeda
Oh, Yep, I forget to attach that "other" logfile, when I start dbus as:

# dbus --system;

Only the Dbus line goes away:

prnt/hpijs/hpijs.cpp 268: unable to set device=HP LaserJet 1018, err=48
prnt/hpijs/hpijs.cpp 289: unable to set device=HP LaserJet 1018, err=48
Unable to open the initial device, quitting.
prnt/hpijs/hpijs.cpp 694: unable to read client data err=-2

Installer adding user - doesn't allow periods in user name

2010-11-04 Thread Richard Toohey
Hi, guys.

This thread[1] (sync adduser with installer) reminded me of a question that I
had:

If I use adduser, I can create a user "firstname.lastname"; if I try that via
the installer,
it doesn't like it - "firstname.lastname is not a useable loginname."

If I look in (4.7) /usr/src/distrib/miniroot/install.sub ...

user_setup() {
local _q="Setup a user? (enter a lower-case loginname, or 'no')"
[--cut--]
[a-z]*([a-z0-9_]))
(( ${#resp} <= 31 )) && break ;;
esac
echo "$resp is not a useable loginname."
done

So it's looking for a-z 0-9 and underscore (IF I am reading the code
correctly)
- but doesn't allow period?

man adduser says:

RESTRICTIONS
 username
It is recommended that login names contain only lowercase
charac-
ters and digits. They may also contain uppercase characters,
non-leading hyphens, periods, underscores, and a trailing `$'.
Login names may not be longer than 31 characters. If you need a
longer login name for e-mail addresses, you can define an alias
 in /etc/mail/aliases.

Entirely as a learning exercise - is there a technical reason, or something
that is inadvisable about using the period in the user name?

Thanks.
