If you really think this is a concern you can just run a ROM of the
open-source Android operating system (such as Cyanogen) without the
proprietary Google applications on top, and then you have nothing to
worry about.

Ah, but you did you understand what nm was telling you?

$ nm /usr/local/lib/libiconv.so.6.0 | grep aliases2
d5c0 t aliases2_lookup
$

>From the nm(1) manpage:

Each symbol name is preceded by its value (a blank field if the symbol is
undefined) and one of the following letters:

If the symbol is local (non-external), the type letter is in lower case.
 The output is sorted alphabetically.

So, aliases2_lookup is local to libiconv.so and can't be accessed
externally. To put it another way, the program is peeking where it
shouldn't. Bad Programmer, no cookie! Go yell at the that project...

Very interesting tip, we tried it, but it doesn't make a difference.

(Our kernel has always been far below 16 MB, apparently too small to
ever hit those two limits.)

--
However, it set us on the path to the eventual solution.

It did seem a good idea to try & compare 'flashrd'. Outcome: the
MULTIPROCESSOR variant of 'flashrd' did work normally.

Followed by countless frustrating hours banging head against wall:
comparing & matching 'option' files, transplanting ramdisk images back
and forth. No experiment worked, almost drove us to desperation.

--
Eventually found the cause: it has nothing to do with 'option's or with
the ramdisk image.

The 'src/distrib/i386/common/Makefile.inc' script adds
COPTS+= -mtune=i486
to the kernel make/gcc command. (since OpenBSD 4.8)

Rather miffed by this discovery! The OpenBSD project does not
allow/support use of non-default gcc arch options. Not even when
compiling userland apps*, let alone when compiling the kernel.

Reasonable policy; as long as you stick to it! Don't make a
nigh-on-unnoticable deviation in such a canonical place as distrib/i386!

= =
*) "No support for non-default gcc arch options": we don't know whether
that's actually properly documented anywhere, but we learned that when
reporting that 'ntohs16()' miscompiled under -march=i686, back in
OpenBSD 3.8 days:

Sure, you can do that. We just won't re-enable it in the tree.

We will re-enable it when someone modifies it to be a bcopy-based network
driver.

from the manpage:

"BUGS
The BCM4401 hardware can not do DMA to addresses above 1GB. Since the
bce driver makes no effort to circumvent this problem, it is likely that
the device will not work properly on machines with more than 1GB of
 system memory."

Am I right by thinking it would be save to enable it if you have less than 1G?

Hi Guys,

OBSD 4.8 was unable to set up my Broadcom BCM4401B1. What is interesting is
that when I tried with OBSD 4.7 the bce set up the interface with no
problem.

USB CD not working in 4.8

2010-11-20 Thread Rene Maroufi
Hi,

I have a USB DVD-Burner, but OpenBSD 4.8 (Release) can't use the drive.
OpenBSD attach the uk driver instead the cd driver with the drive.
dmesg:

TS8XDVDR(0x13fd), rev 1.66, iSerialNumber 30314435363738394B4C

With Linux the drive is working as /dev/sr0 device. Can I hardwire the
device to the cd driver with a custom Kernel? Or is this a bug?

Cheers
Reni

Re: VLAN Tagging problem Intel D945GCLF / Realtek 8101E - UPDATE

2010-11-20 Thread Simon Slaytor

Just thought I'd post a quick update.

I've installed a dual port Intel Pro 100S server nic in the sole PCI
slot of the D945GCLF and moved the connection over from the on-board
8101e based Nic.

Using the same VLAN configuration and the same Switch configuration as
before everything now _works_ without issue.

Given this I can say 100% that when using an 8101e based card with RE(4)
under 4.7 AMD64 vlan tagging is broken.

New DMESG below.

No. There is a hierarchy for specific types of interfaces (like
vlans and such), but not for the raw basic types. That is just
alphabetic.

However you can insert ! commands into any of the files at any time,
to do additional tasks that you want.

Interface init order on boot

2010-11-20 Thread Duncan Patton a Campbell
Howdy List?

Does anyone know if its possible to affect the order
of interface initialization on boot? I have a
situation where I'd like a local (static) ether interface
to be established before a dhcp request is made
in order to do an nsupdate on the local channel
when the dhcp is established.

Thanks,

Dhu

This is one of the reasons it's often simpler to use pxeboot(8) so you
can install straight on the machine; the installer asks you if you'd like
the console to be on the serial port, and sets everything up for you.

No /usr/bin/cvs is GNU CVS:

/usr/bin/cvs -v

It means the sources are still there, but aren't build with the whole
system. You have to build it yourself with something like:

cd /usr/src/bin/cvs
make
sudo make install

Here is the commit mentionning the removal from the build:

http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/src/usr.bin/Makefile#rev1.114

Since then the commits on OpenCVS and OpenRCS have been pretty active
again, but not yet putted back in the build:

http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/src/usr.bin/cvs/

The default CVS shipped with OpenBSD it's still GNU CVS. So I wouldn't
use OpenCVS unless I wanted to test it and/or improve it.

I guess it was replaced sometime in between August-October after

it, I think it was on t...@. We might get that OpenCVS announcement
