KVM Switching and CPU and Fan Speed

2015-03-08 Thread Steven

I've got a set up between two towers where I use a KVM (KVMS?)
switch between them. The one running OpenBSD (snaphots and recent as
of this morning) seems step up it's CPU speed when I'm switched out
to the other computer. I'm wondering if I'm the only one seeing this.

If I am on an empty desktop or the desktop only contains a xterm
(whether it's running something it or not) the CPU steps up to max
MHz but the fan speed remains relatively low. If I have a graphical
application running however, the CPU not only runs at maximum, but
the CPU fan tries its best to spin loose from the cooler.

I'm running Spectrwm as my desktop. The KVM switch is a
USB/VGA/Audio IOGear using keyboard sequences to switch between
connected computers.

I get the following errors when running hp-doctor. Is there a package
for "python-devel"? I couldn't find anything that looked right, so I
added py-openbsd and python-tools. However, neither made a difference.

Very-small fully-functional systems?

2015-03-08 Thread Adam Thompson
I'm looking for a very (physically) small (embedded) platform that can
run OpenBSD properly, including at least:

USB 2.0,
ethernet,
MIDI (presumably via USB),
OK-to-good-quality analog audio out (can be USB),
some kind of decent storage (i.e. not USB!),
and enough CPU horsepower to run a soundfont-based softsynth like
timitidy or fluidsynth (so ~500MHz+).

All preferably for no more than ~C$100 per board.

Locally, I can get RasPis, BeagleBone Blacks, and MinnowBoards cheaply.
The RasPi isn't supported at all, the BeagleBone Black doesn't have USB
yet, and the MinnowBoards don't have ethernet yet.

Looking at the OpenBSD platform list, I see these options
Wandboard, SABRE Lite, Nitrogen6X, Pandaboard (armv7): all too
expensive, although the wandboard comes close on price (~C$110 to $125 +
S&H).

SH-4 (landisk): not fast enough
RB600A (socppc): not available anymore.

That leaves i386 and amd64 platforms.
There are a few Intel J1800 boards available for RAM), but I have no idea how well they run OpenBSD, and most of them
seem to have UEFI boot only.

If you know of a small, cheap, fanless, x86-compatible board available
in Canada *that runs OpenBSD reasonably well*, please let me know.
Otherwise I'll probably have to give the Wandboard a shot despite the
slightly-too-high price.

(In case it's not blazingly obvious, I want to try creating a
replacement for a hardware MIDI synthesizer, but that can choose between
soundfonts.)

Thanks,
-Adam

Sorry bout that lets try again.

I've usually had a lot of success with hplip, but I got a new printer
that should be supported and I can't seem to get it to work. It
installs fine both from the command line and from the cups web
interface. I have ulpt disabled. Below are logs, etc..

Thanks for the info. I reckon it would be quite an undertaking to sync
audio devices over (different) network connections -- especially on wifi,
as in my case --, I just wondered if changing the buffer size would make
a difference.

Anyhow that isn't really important (and if it were, I'd get wireless
speakers or something like that), I'm more than happy as it is. Thanks
for the great work, Alexandre.

Thanks for your feedback. Actually, I re-installed the latest snapshot
in a qemu environment and added only cups (and its dependencies), just
to double check, and I can confirm that the permissions are correct.

I don't really know what went wrong... Anyhow, now it's ok.

Sorry for the noise.

We don't have the necessary code to synchronize two audio devices.
Changing the buffer size wont fix the drifting

mpd.conf on the server:

audio_output {
type"pipe"
name"room"
command "aucat -f snd@192.168.17.170,0/0 -i -"
}
audio_output {
type"pipe"
name"x201"
command "aucat -f snd@192.168.17.168,0/0 -i -"
}
audio_output_format "48000:16:2"

rc.conf.local on the output boxes:

sndio_flags="-U 0 -L -"

Bonus feature: turn both of them on and the slight lack of sync between
outputs turns into reverb which makes your house seem 10x larger (then
turn one of them off because they will keep drifting apart and it
becomes really annoying). Maybe different buffer sizes will fix this,
but I never bothered to check.

Cheers
Zé
