I eventually found the culprit after a 'du -h /dev' ..found a file '/dev/sd2' there with 937M! No idea how or what I had done to create it, but my guess is it was whilst learning how to properly mount devices. Anyway, I deleted it. All fine and back to normal. System working fine.
