OpenBSD 6.7 - uncommon behavior
Hello guys. Today, I've installed OpenBSD 6.7 on Windows 10 pro ( Hyper-V ) which I already has 6.6 running very well. So, the planning was: Migrate my conf's, turn off my 6.6 and make use of 6.7. 1 - By default hyper-v add's one processor. In the end of my fresh install it doesn't work ( tried two times ) ( My NTFS has 1M alignment ) - doesn't work = not boot 2 - I've recreated the VM and add two processors. It booted and I have installed some packages: pkg_add vim pkg_add tor pkg_add curl and pkg_add openvpn shutdown ( disks were synced ) Add additional network card and then Power ON again. ( with a lot of errors on filesystem ) My /etc/group file just get blank. Regards,

In general: man pages are reference material (meant for people who are already familiar with unix or with the man page's topic, often not meant to be read cover to cover, definitely doesn't hold your hand) and in contrast, a considerable amount of the documentation (though certainly not all!) in /usr/src is tutorial material (meant for learning something for the first time, easily read cover to cover, holds your hand) usable by newbs. Examples supporting this comparison: man 1 ed versus the Brian W. Kernighan "A Tutorial Introduction to the UNIX Text Editor" man 1 yacc versus the Stephen C. Johnson Yacc "Yacc: Yet Another Compiler-Compiler" man 1 vi versus vi.beginner (though indeed, vi.1 has the Fast Startup section, vi.1 is an exception rather than the norm) Just looking at a list of BSD USD (UNIX User's Supplementary Documents) documents or Unix v7 supplementary documents (The UNIX Programmer's Manual volume 2) can provide more examples. Some of them don't particularly have a man page they match up to, by being broader and more newb-oriented in theme. The only point against this, though a BIG and important one, is that the datedness of the tutorial materials does make them less usable for newbs. I agree much of the stuff is outdated and less usable than it used to be. I also think having it with a disclaimer is better than not having it at all. Ideally... I myself should put in effort into checking some of them and fixing and updating them. Also: I do like OpenBSD's man pages and FAQ! Don't let anything I've said above convince you otherwise. The lack of decent front-end is really achilles tendon of Collectd. Even the website https://collectd.org/wiki/index.php/List_of_front-ends is grossly outdated. The net/librenms port https://openports.pl/path/net/librenms is your best bet. LibreNMS is SNMP-based network monitoring system written in PHP and requires MySQL database. It is a fork of Observium. https://www.observium.org/ While Observium/LibreNMS primary focus is on monitoring SNMP capable devices both can can integrate with Collectd to show graphs drawn from Collectd modules in the web interface. https://docs.observium.org/collectd/ I use Observium running of Ubuntu 16.04 to monitor a smallish infrastructure consisting of about 100 devices. I monitor through SNMP pretty much everything you can think of: batteries on UPSs, electric consumption of GPU computing nodes via switched PDUs monitoring, managed switches, servers, named it. In addition to SNMP polling, I also run Collectd on all my production servers (about 70 Open/Free BSD infrastructure and Red Hat computing nodes) and push RRDs to the centralized Observium server. Observium automatically build incredibly pretty and informative graphs from RRDs. You don't need to build your own dashboards like with Grafana (IIRC facette requires to build your own dashboards and it is not even very good). On Red Hat where Collectd IPMI plugin actually works you also get those nice IPMI graphs. I tried to run LibreNMS of OpenBSD kernel on bare metal. It was just too sluggish and web interface was not really usable comparing to Observium on Ubuntu. I never really bothered to troubleshoot the problem. It could be that LibreNMS at that time was just not polished enough (they were much more agressive in adding features than Observium free community edition). It could be the file system performance. I tried using both SSD and spinning drives but no big difference. I tried memcached and few other things. If you search through misc archive with keyword LibreNMS you will see bunch of my posts and developers/users who were trying to help. Observium is officially(per alpha male Adam Armstrong) is designed to run only designed to run on Ubuntu or Debian and my experience confirms that. My Observiu/Ubuntu runs as DomU on Alpine Linux Xen Dom0 instance. I do use raw SSD block devices as a storage. Network interface is 1 Gigabit and even though I have 10 Gigabit card and 10 Gigabit network I didn't bother to upgrade. Before I wrap up this long email I would like to bring to your attention another option. Instead of directly drawing Collectd RRDs you can use carbon or gmond plugin https://collectd.org/wiki/index.php/Plugin:Carbon https://collectd.org/wiki/index.php/Plugin:gmond to feed collectd into Graphite or Ganglia. I vaguely remember playing with Graphite plugin but I lost enthusiasm after realizing that I will have to build by custom dashboards. Jason Dixon who wrote a book on Monitoring with Graphite should be luring around here so he might be able to pitch a bit. I never tried running Ganglia on OpenBSD as it is not in official ports tree. Just as a final note, if you are doing this to monitor few devices in your home lab you are way above your head. While all I said is trivial I would have never done it if somebody was not paying for it. There are far simpler ways to accomplish above on a small home network. Best, Predrag

It's been fixed in 6.7 release! This was indeed a problem on my alix and soekris machines for a while. And I could also reproduce it in a 6.7-beta low memory VM as you did. I attempted to debug ld.lld for a while but eventually gave up (debugging the linker is quite painful). I did not come to any conclusion but did notice that ld.lld uses mmap to write ELF data to the output file. That file always ended up being corrupt under low memory conditions. The old ld.bfd linker uses stdio and worked OK. With 6.7 kernel relinking with little amounts of memory suddenly started working again. To make sure I'm not dreaming I bisected the commit which fixed it. Turns out this problem was fixed by beck@ in the commit below. I can even relink kernels on i386 in 64MB of RAM now. Didn't test lower than that. Case closed. When reading KARL notes i tough that it only incompatible with kernel changed with config -e or kernel configuration file, which i did not modified. What about kernel relinking at boot time? Kernel changes was working after reboot, before applying syspatch. So it seems at boot time relinking script took right base kernel to relink. How can i fix it? syspacth -r doesnt help. > You can not syspatch a system with a custom kernel. You need to do apply the patches yourself. syspatch only works for non-modified kernels. as i understand, kernel relinking currently used object file and installs new kernel. what i do not understand is how could it 'rollback' kernel changes done during compilation, if it using current object files which arre built during compilation. Hi everyone! I noticed facette became broken in 6.7. Do you guys use any neat tool to graph collectd RRDs? Preferrably in ports or at most something git-pullable but with no outside deps (relative to base or ports). Thanks for the input! Dani

I could reproduce the issue (all steps are done exactly as in openbsd.org faq). I changed RT_TABLEID_MAX, recompiled the kernel, booted from it, and change didnt work on userland. Then i rebuilt userland, rebooted, all works now. Now if i apply some patch from errata, there is kernel re-linking done, and just after that kernel change doesnt work. Is it expected behavior? Neither is a copyright mark an any sense of the law, and using it does not do anything else than informing the reader that you claim the rights - you already have the rights even if you don't write anything. If you can only use ASCII, the "most proper" way would be to spell out "Copyright", but that is also just for information. As you can see, your example is using both forms.
