OpenBSD on Dell m4800 -- Anybody tried it?
I am considering the purchase of a Dell Precision M4800 laptop with the intention of installing OpenBSD on it. Has anyone here ran OBSD on one of these? I will configure it with an AMD FirePro M5100. Google has fail to find anyone who has tried this. Thanks Ray

Hi Ray, I haven't used a Dell Precision M4800 with OBSD yet, but I found that under PCBSD it should work. Given OBSD has very good laptop support I believe everything should be detected. I have included a link to the PCBSD site where I found the your laptop listed. http://wiki.pcbsd.org/index.php/Hardware Cheers, Shaun On Tue, Apr 14, 2015 at 6:17 PM, Raymond Lillard r...@prosysmeg.com wrote: I am considering the purchase of a Dell Precision M4800 laptop with the intention of installing OpenBSD on it. Seconded. Try to find a way to test it! My nephew gave me his Dell M4500 when he got a new job. It was a couple of years old, but with an i7 processor and overall decent specs I looked forward to try OpenBSD on it and hopefully letting it replace my old ThinkPad T500. However, I couldn't barely get the installer working (the keyboard started repeating every keypress) and the dmesg was full of references to unsupported hardware. It might have been a bad snapshot or something, but I gave up after a couple of tries and decided to let it become my new Windows-machine reserved for family and friends dropping by. I would like to believe that, but OEMs are constantly changing hardware. Since everyone runs Windows, all they have to do is make sure the new frotzel works, and ship it. Over time, the parts that don't work will likely get drivers, but if you need a laptop that just runs right now, I would find a way to test it. --STeve Andre' On 04/15/15 14:28, Shaun Reiger wrote: Hi Ray, I haven't used a Dell Precision M4800 with OBSD yet, but I found that under PCBSD it should work.
