I believe I encountered the bug referenced here the other day on amd64, checking-out xenocara:

Some of the fonts in XF4 cause any 64-bit client to allocate too much memory on the server side and fail, it hasn't been debugged/fixed yet." After reading that, I realized that the snapshot I was running had opencvs installed. Trying the exact same command (against a local repository) with opencvs worked perfectly and I had xenocara built in no time. Thanks to the OpenCVS committers for saving the day.
