Update: the issue was solved by one of the developers. It looks like the
wrong partition was marked active on the USB stick, partition zero instead
of 3. It can be done manually with fdisk.
And yes, the non-EFI boot is affected only.

Yes, non-EFI handling is busted, probably in recent fdisk changes.
It is being looked into.
