A backup is 1GB (forum SQL database, forum files, wiki files). We use
Google Cloud "coldline" storage which is $0.007/gb/month. (pretty cheap)

Doing incremental daily backups and weekly full backups is a nice tradeoff.

Thanks for the pointer to duplicity Sebastien :).

Frankly, I don't feel the forum data really warrants the space required for
daily or hourly backups... It's not exactly e-commerce data or info of
high personal valuable, I think of it as being slightly higher value that
IRC data, so for the space vs value I think weekly backups are more than
adequate.

up through 12/7.

Thanks for pointing me to /var/lib/mysql-upgrade Sebastian. The "DATADIR"
symlink in there is clearly cruft left over from a mysql-5.7 package. It
confused mariadb-server's postinst script:

The "# this should never even happen, but just in case..." section ended up
running for us. Neither Garth nor I noticed that in addition to

folder was moved there as well. Whew!

/var/lib/mysql-5.7 is the old database from when we were using mysql
(before the MariaDB upgrade) on Nov 10th. That's what Garth reverted us to
before I restored Dec 3rd from backup.
