Hi Chris, Thanks for writing your review and for following up on this with us. I think this is the way things are going to go. There are a growing number of MIDI controllers on the market with large turntable-esque platters that also include knobs/faders, which could make great replacements for analog equipment. These newer controllers are going to open up some new possibilities in the DJ realm (think Ableton Live). > As for the mixxx developers, I didn't intend to make such a negative > claim. I very much appreciate your honest opinion and I'd like to thank you for sharing it. Feedback from DJs (be it our users or otherwise) is what drives our development, and your criticism sheds some light on areas of Mixxx which need work (many of these fall under the category of usability issues, which are very important). As a direct follow-up to a few of your points, I'd like to mention that we had a student working on "session" saving and loading over the summer. This allows Mixxx's knobs/faders positions to be saved and loaded, which I believe addresses your concern about them not sticking across restarts. When exactly feature will make it into a release isn't certain, but most of the work is done. As well, I've written a vinyl control signal quality widget for the vinyl control preferences pane. This allows you to see whether or not Mixxx is correctly reading the timecode off your vinyl/CD, and what the input level is. This should help users troubleshoot problems with vinyl control, and hopefully mitigate bad experiences like yours. Thanks again, and feel free to share any additional thoughts and comments you might have. This sounds to be very correct. I was hoping to avoid the whole extra hardware thing, but yourself and Ron Stewart make an excellent case for the 'complete' switch to digital utilizing controllers rather than the typical analog hardware. As for the mixxx developers, I didn't intend to make such a negative claim. The comments that did make my post (however) qualified my position by suggesting xwax. My intent was demo/post on xwax as well, but time is never permitting. I do in fact commend the project's efforts and I'll be happy to qualify my impressions more carefully in the future. I especially understand that open source projects have enough to withstand without unneeded negative press. However, it's fair to present honest impressions in my opinion. As an aside, Mixxx IS on my permanent radar. Hi there. It sounds like the guy either doesn't understand or doesn't need/want the features Mixxx brings to the table. I think Xwax would be a better fit for his preferences. (I tried to post a comment to this effect in a response to his blog but it didn't show up.) Basically, if you just want the computer to play the music and you'll do all mixing and effects externally (hardware-centered approach,) Xwax is what you want. If you want to be able to do everything (mixing, effects, etc.) in the computer for maximum flexibility and lowest cost using (relatively) dumb hardware simply for (tactile) control, Mixxx is your answer. >From a guy who has been spinning and making wax since he was 17 years old, and who does not need headphones to beatmix instantly, (just a monitor and a quarter turn on a 1200 to get on beat) Mixxx is way cooler than what was discussed in the article... I have not really ever stood on my soapbox? BUT I can honestly say that I NEVER consider anything other than actually learning how to spin records on 1200's (not copycat TT's), (I could teach a class on the difference in the timing and touch/drag of a 1200 platter versus any other turntable) is truly DJing, at least in an actual nightclub / discotheque DJ environment. I remember when Gemini? and the others came to us in the mid 90's claiming CD DJ was next and I should leave my vinyl in the dust... but none of us jumped ship because the CD decks could not replicate the 1200. Then when I was a promoter at Showbox in Seattle for a big DJ night called 'Dedicated' we booked Richie Hawtin for our D&B room and we go to pick this guy up at the airport and we go downstairs to pick up his flight case and he didn't have one. He was telling us about mp3/laptop DJing with his what would be known as Final Scratch. Still not buying it or these sub-formats. I actually giggled at him, thinking no way...oops! (BTW mp3's were the big rage in the studios in 1993, but compared to our Sound Designer 2 files mp3 still sucked!) Again Richie opened in Miami April 2002 when I was touring with Outkast doing wardrobe for Andre 3000 and he still had this laptop pushing laptop DJing. I still thought no way will this format go boy was I wrong Why do I say this? and what's my point? well I have poopooed EVERY format and style of non DJ Djing for 20 years and I got to say that I love Mixxx. I have my crates but for the first time ever I find myself completely using Mixxx only when I want to spin my mp3/wav encoded records. One thing I overlooked all this time was how much I always hated lugging crates, mixers and 1200's to gigs. I never liked that about DJing, and now with Mixxx on Indamixx I can throw everything in my back pocket. With the touchscreen I can pitch correct real fast... (side note to younger DJ's - back in the day we had to carry big a** speakers and HEAVY crown amps to EVERY gig along with about 14 crates of records depending on the gig, just to make a buck) OK I know the Serato argument, but its still pricey and you still need 1200's and most likely a macbookpro don't cha? Besides, I can't think of another DJ app that has all the supported crossover formats that Mixxx does. Also, does anyone know if you can Icecast2 Mixxx directly to the net? as I currently beatmix live over the net with wifi on Indamixx by connecting Mixxx to IDJC in Qjack. To the Mixxx team... thank you... I am finally convinced, plus I love the community efforts. I will loyally evangelize Mixxx, so if there are any 'big talkers', 'tough guys', 'know it alls', or 'hard sells', just send them my way. I started remixing in house for Tommy Boy Records when I was 19 in 1989. I remixed for every major label and most indies, I started Wicked Mixx, when we jumped from Mixx-it, I started Factor 3 Records and Bulletproof Records. I signed Sean 'Mystro' Mather among others such as Charles 'The Mixologist' Roane between 1992-1994, both of those guys have sold over 20 million records combined, Charles won a Grammy last year for 'aint no other man', and currently is DJ Premiere's engineer, Charles also produced Groove Theory and JD's SoSo Def Bass Allstars CD. Sean produced Immature, All saints, gogo remix of Missy's 'I cant stand the rain', Gwen Stefani, Michael Jackson, & Salt and Pepa. Sean won a BMI for All Saints among others. I have been doing this so long that I was even one of the very first beta testers for Pro Tools hired by Chris Bach personally who is one of the guys who invented Pro Tools. (BTW every thing in here can be verified by Jeff Davies who got me these gigs and ironically is the same guy who brought Serato from New Zealand to Rane, who is still at Rane all these years later, talk about a loyal person, and super cool). So for someone who has made DJing a life choice.. when it comes to Mixxx I have zero hangups and no complaintsThink of it like this... what other DJ apps are out there that you can hack and tweak and put on another device and create another product without having to look out for the cops or lawyers? ps there is a REAL reason WHY we use double X or XX in stuff but you would have to be a bay area DJ in the 80's to even know... but hey I am positive some of y'all are still out there!!! keeping it real since 1969 (and it has cost me at times to do so!) thanks again Ronald Stewart www.indamixx.com pss in my next rant I will tell the story of how I got rid of my Euro-bootleggers by cutting them in on my record distribution while still making money!!! holla! rs On Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 9:49 PM, Albert Santoni <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hey guys,
