1. When I start mkgmap without --gmapsupp I get an IMG file, that is a single
layer in a map.

The problem in Feb was fixed, there is currently a problem in the latest
svn version with similar symptoms that is not fixed.

One more thing that has been reported on the forum, is the issue that labels
for hamlets in Mapsource are bigger than villages.
If I look on http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/editor.cgi it shows that garmin
type 0x1100 (used for hamlets) is shown as City name(Point, big) whereas type
0x0b

Correct. The 800 can use multiple maps with different filenames. If you
alter the family-id and corresponding entry in the typ file these maps
can be selected/deselected
