Apart from checking username and password again, perhaps your phone's
keyboard automatically inserts some extra spaces at the end of words?

At the risk of stating the obvious, but have you checked if the sync server is
still running on your desktop version and that the address, port, username and
password match? Also, make sure there are no firewalls or routers that block
that specific port.
