Porting Espeak to Symbian coming in from the cold Author: Willem van der Walt Date: 21 August 2009 INTRODUCTION What I knew at this point: Some questions I had at this point: INSTALLING THE TOOL CHAIN UNDER UBUNTU DOING THE ACTUAL ESPEAK PORT TESTING THE ESPEAK PORT USING PYTHON FOR S60 SYMBIAN, STANDARD OUT AND OPEN-C CONCLUSION INTRODUCTION Espeak is a multi-lingual, open-source text to speech synthesizer. It was originally written for Acorn/RISC_OS computers starting in 1995 It has a small footprint regarding computing resources and is available on Linux, Solaris and Windows. Given the popularity and market penetration of mobile phones in South Africa, it makes a lot of sense to have a text to speech synthesizer potentially capable of doing text to speech conversion in our local languages available on this platform. With Symbian smart phones now being freely available on the cheapest contracts with the South African mobile phone service providers, these type of phones became the computer available to most South Africans of all income levels. Having built the Afrikaans espeak voice together with its author, I firmly felt that building our other languages should follow. A Symbian port of Espeak would make that effort so much more worth our while. The rest of this document goes into detail of the porting process which was successful in the end. I have tried to get someone to do the port, but did not find anyone interested enough. COMING IN FROM THE COLD After an attempt by a student to do the port did not materialize, I decided to give it a go myself. What I set out to do was to port the command-line version of espeak without the capability to produce audio directly, but rather just with the capability to produce an audio file containing the speech. The idea was to use Python under Symbian to then call the espeak executable to synthesize the text obtained through the python script, into a .wav file and play the .wav file using some native sound player from that same python script. What I knew at this point: list of 7 items 1. That a variant of C++, the language espeak is written in, was available on Symbian. 2. That Espeak already was ported to Linux, Windows and Dos from the original Riscos. 3. That the sound output in espeak is handled by a library called portaudio and that one can build espeak without this library, which would still allow the creation of a .wav file containing the synthesized speech. 4. That I have ported the reduced version as in the step above to an ARM-based Linux device. 5. That a stripped down, custom version of the Python language existed on Symbian through which one might be able to call a Symbian binary. 6. That I knew nothing else about Symbian and not much more about C++ or the implementation of Python under Symbian. 7. That, although I had a good idea of what these smart phones are capable of, I had no personal experience using one of them, not even as a user. list end Some questions I had at this point: list of 7 items 1. Would I be able to do the port just using the Linux command-line? Answer: Yes with the help of the wine emulator. 2. Which tools do I need to build a installable program for Symbian? Answer: The gnupok-package from http://www.martin.st/symbian/, a special version of gcc also available from that site, the correct SDK from Nokia, and since this is a port of a Linux program, the open-c/c++ plugin for this SDK also available from Nokia. The latter is a set of POSIX compatible C/C++ libraries for Symbian. according to me, it is very difficult to operate. Because I already used 1 touch screen mobile, name of that handset is nokia500. It is my brother's mobile. , as this app is free to download and use, there is no harm in a TalkBack user downloading and having a go at using it. Any other comments In order to improve the accessibility of this app, it is recommended that the layout is adapted to make it easier to navigate with a screen reader. Additionally, it is recommended that the playback controls are fixed and audio described programmes are made available. Conclusion The 4oD app for Android enables the user to browse and watch content as well as downloading programmes and keep them to watch for 30 days. When it comes to accessibility, the app is not easy to use with TalkBack at all. In order to improve the accessibility of the app, it is recommended that the layout of the app is changed to make it easier to move around with a screen reader, as well as including audio described content in the app. Additionally, the issues concerning locating buttons and using the playback controls need to be resolved. In comparison to the BBC iPlayer Android app, the 4oD app is less accessible when it comes to browsing through the content. At this moment in time, I would not recommend the app to other TalkBack users, but as the app is free, those who wish to have a go at using the app can as they are not losing anything.
