Go for the smart cane. You can detach the cane and only use the sonar device. In addition, you could use the vOICe for Android to alert you of objects and also once you learn how to interpret the soundscapes determine what that object is. However, the clarity of images is subject to the level of light which may make things difficult in environments with less light. There is also the after-sight model 1 at http://www.after-sight.com which combines an open source implementation of the vOICe with an ultrasound distance sensor.
