[Mono-dev] Branching for Mono 2.6.0 on September 24th...

2009-09-17 Thread Thomas Wiest
Hey Guys,
This is to notify you that we will be branching for Mono 2.6.0 on
Thursday, September 24th (a week from today). The first Preview will be
built on Monday, September 28th.

So, before then, please:
* Check in anything that you want to go into Mono 2.6.0
* Refrain from checking in anything that is considered unstable until
after we branch
* Fix any unit tests that are failing (I've included a list of the
current failures on trunk).

Thanks!
Thomas

Any comments on my recent post to the moonlight list, or should I also

Re: [Mono-dev] Chiron.exe on mono 2.4.2.1 crashes with System.TypeLoadException

2009-07-21 Thread Thomas Wiest
Hey Jimmy,
I was just able to run Chiron.exe in the Mono 2.4.2.1 vmware image.

Here are the steps I took:
1. Download the mono 2.4.2.1 vmware image from:
http://www.go-mono.com/mono-downloads/download.html

2. Download the ironruby 0.6.0 zip file inside the VM

http://ironruby.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=29640#DownloadId=73806

3. unzip the zip file

4. cd silverlight/bin

5. run mono Chrion.exe

6. Here's part of the output I got:
rup...@linux:~/Desktop/delme/silverlight/bin mono Chiron.exe
Microsoft(R) Silverlight(TM) Development Utility. Version 1.0.0.0
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Usage: Chiron [options]

Options:
[...]

So, now I'm wondering if the problem is something wrong with your VMware
image.

For instance;
* are you out of disk space maybe?
check with df -h. The main filesystem is /dev/sda1. Check the
available space.

* You might have run out of inodes (this is a problem old Mono VMs had,
but was fixed in the 2.4.2.1 vmware image).
check with df -i. Again check /dev/sda1. Check the IUse%

* You might have run out of ram in the VM.
check with free -m

If you download a clean VMware image and follow the steps above, I'm
confident that Chiron.exe will run for you too.

 All,

I'm working out some kinks with DLR running on Mono and Moonlight, and
I found that Chiron.exe no longer runs against Mono. It works against

Any thoughts? You can just grab the latest IronRuby release, and

Re: [Mono-dev] Debugger Unit tests

2009-06-24 Thread Thomas Wiest
Hey Jonas,
You can see how our build bot runs the tests by looking at the output.

http://mono.ximian.com/monobuild/builds/HEAD/sles-10-i586/mono-debugger/136758/logs/test.log

That includes the commands as well as the output.

From that output, it looks like the command is:
./runtests -noshadow -labels
-exclude:NotWorking,Attach,Native,Threads,AppDomain,GUI || ok=false; \
$ok

Hope this helps,
Thomas

Special attention is given to regressions, so if you can tell us a version of
Mono where the bug worked and you add [Regression] to the beginning of the

[Mono-dev] Announcing Mono 2.4 Preview RC 1...

2009-02-24 Thread Thomas Wiest
Hey Everyone,

We've just released Mono 2.4 RC 1 today!

Please help us out by giving it a try with your applications.

As always, you can get the preview/RC releases here:
http://mono.ximian.com/monobuild/preview/download-preview/

Please report any bugs that you may find using our Bugs page, AND reply to this
thread with the bug numbers so we can track them:
http://www.mono-project.com/Bugs

You can see the bugs we're tracking for Mono 2.4 here:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/buglist.cgi?query_format=advancedclassification=Monotarget_milestone=2.4.xorder=bugs.bug_status%2Cbugs.bug_severity

The earlier you file the bugs and reply to this message, the more likely your
bugs will get fixed.

Special attention is given to regressions, so if you can tell us a version of
Mono where the bug worked and you add [Regression] to the beginning of the
summary of the bug, then it is much more likely your bug will get fixed.

Please help the Mono team to make 2.4 the best ever.

Thanks!

[Mono-dev] 2 Mono releases a year...

2008-12-08 Thread Thomas Wiest
Hey Guys,
The build and test team is struggling to keep up with all of our
obligations (and our task lists just keep growing). The only way I can
see being able to get ahead is to reduce the number of Mono releases we
do a year. Right now we've been trying to do 4 releases a year (it looks
like it's going to be closer to 3 in the short term).

I propose that we start doing only 2 Mono releases a year. This will
allow the build and test team a lot more time in between releases to
keep up with the tasks we've been asked to do.

So, the question is, if we start doing 2 releases a year, what are the
negative affects of this?

Since the major distros and gnome only have 2 releases a year also, I
would think the impact would be fairly minimal. Am I wrong?

Please help us out by giving it a try with your applications.

Please report any bugs that you may find using our Bugs page, AND reply

You can see the bugs we're tracking for Mono 2.2 here:

The earlier you file the bugs and reply to this message, the more likely

[Mono-dev] Build / Release team meeting with Miguel notes...

2008-11-10 Thread Thomas Wiest
Hey Guys,
We had a Build / Release team meeting with Miguel today, and he
asked me to send out the notes.

Meeting Notes:

* We don't want to stop the build bots during releases.
 - For Mono 2.0, we changed our releases to being built in the
openSUSE build service, so this fixed the majority of the reasons we
were stopping the build bots. For the last week, Andrew has been working
on the last few issues, and is now confident that for Mono 2.2, we won't
need to stop the build bots.

* Create a lane for building Olive
   - This has already been done, it's just that the web page isn't
clear. The Olive builds are on the bottom of the page under the no-arch
builds.

* We need to start building IronPython ourselves as the community
edition isn't being updated on a regular basis.

* Make the Mono windows installer a smaller download
   - Split gtk# out into it's own component
   - Strip out the static libraries (the .a's)
   - Change the gtk# installer to install to both the MS and Mono GACs

* Change the Mono windows installer over to Wix so that it is an MSI

* Make the Mono OSX installer a smaller download
   - Make 2 packages
  1. Mono runtime / gtk#
  2. SDK (all of the static libs, MonoDevelop and everything else
not in the Mono runtime)

* Publish ia64 builds for SLES

* Fix the Mono daily builds

[Mono-dev] Slow Bugzilla Logins...

2008-04-01 Thread Thomas Wiest
Hey Guys,
Awhile ago I complained (again) to the bugzilla / ichain teams about
the slowness of logging into Bugzilla. They said that they needed a
WireShark log of a slow login session in order to trouble shoot what was
going on. Unfortunately since it's sporadic, I haven't been able to
capture one yet. If any of you happen to capture one, I'll be more than
happy to forward it on to them.

In the mean time, they gave me a suggestion that has seemed to help.
They suggested that I turn off TLS 1.0 support in FireFox. In FireFox on
Linux you can do this by going to Edit / Preferences / Advanced /
Encryption and unchecking the checkbox Use TLS 1.0. Since I made this
change, I haven't seen any long pauses while logging into Novell Bugzilla.

I've added this to our Novell Bugzilla FAQ page here:

I don't really know of a graceful way to downgrade mono (you can always
force RPM to downgrade using --force, but again, that's not very
graceful and could cause problems).

For testing different versions of Mono, we use VMs. When I need to
downgrade a VM's mono I use smart ( http://en.opensuse.org/Smart ) and
remove mono-core (it removes everything, including banshee, tomboy,
f-spot, so be careful). Then I install the mono version I need. If you
install smart, make sure to install the smart-gui package as well. You
can then start the smart gui with smart --gui.

It's best not to downgrade the Mono on your main linux machine. Instead,
consider using the Mono VMWare image or the Mono LiveCD from our
download page ( http://mono-project.com/Downloads ). That way your main
Linux machine continues to work well.

Hope this helps,

We usually don't formulate the release notes until shortly before we
relase, so you'll have to wait until the release for the specifics. I
can tell you that we jumped from 1.2.6 to 1.9 in preparation for our
next release which will be Mono 2.0. See the road map for more details
of what that entails ( http://mono-project.com/Roadmap#Mono_2.0 ).

Great! We look forward to your bug reports.

Also, regressions are our top priority, so once you get a reproducible

see if it works there, your bug will get fixed much quicker (assuming it
does, of course).

Special attention is given to regressions, so if you can tell us a

[Mono-dev] 1.2.6 Preview 2 status...

2007-11-19 Thread Thomas Wiest
Hey Guys,
We just finished our test runs on 1.2.6p2. Here's the list of bugs
that we'd like to look at fixing for Mono 1.2.6p3.

[Unsure of the culprit]
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342507
[Packaging] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=323555
[Packaging] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342572
[gmcs] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342584
[Runtime] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=341112
[HttpWebRequest] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342533
[Sys.Core] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342890
[Winforms] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342504
[Winforms] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342568
[Winforms] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342122
[Winforms] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342123

342507 is quite weird. It does not happen on 1.2.5.1, and I don't
remember it happening on 1.2.6p1 either (however, I may have installed
the c/c++ pattern for another reason). It is clearly not a MonoDevelop
bug, but since I have no idea what's causing it, I haven't moved it yet.

Could someone please take a look at it?

Thanks,
Thomas

Do I really have to create a novell login just to
 look at the test runs?

Actually, it looks like right now only Novell employees have access to
Testopia. There's a bug filed to open Testopia up to external people.

I talked with the guy who's overseeing this, and he said that they hope
to have all of their security audits and whatnot done in the next few
months.

I've been trying to avoid having to create an account,
and I can understand requiring it for submitting new
bugs, but for looking at existing public bugs and
testrun results, that simply doesn't make any sense
and seem to me to deter new contributors.

Actually, all of the non-security related Mono bugs can be seen without
having to login. Mono bugs are completely open to the public by default.
When filing a new bug, you actually have to manually change the bug to
internal.

I agree that the results should be readily available, this
test setup has just been started, so allow for some teething
 problems:)

Exactly! :)

Once the current release work is completed I'd also like the
testopia features to be available to contributors, so that
testing for architectures and systems we don't have access to (or we
don't have testing bandwith for) can be done by contributors
and collected in the same place as the test runs we do in house.

The Mono QA team would like this very much. We understand just how much
the OSS community helps us out, and we'd love for Testopia to be a
coordination point for this work.

I have to agree. If we are talking about a on size fits all Mono
distribution, no version number can be too descriptive.

Exactly, so maybe we eliminate the confusion entirely and use a version
number that has nothing to do with .Net.

It seems to me that the whole problem that we are having is that we keep
trying to imply our status with our version number, and people keep
inferring wrong (as with Miguel's example of the guy asking when asp.net
2.0 would be done). Why don't we stop trying to imply our status through
our version number?

If we had a completely different numbering scheme, this wouldn't happen.
For instance, we could do something like Ubuntu where we take the
Year.Month.0 of the release. So, 1.2.6 would most likely be 7.11.0.

7.11.0 doesn't make any sense to a .Net person. Therefore they will have
to go read the release notes and other documentation to find out exactly
what is in this version. Bug fix only releases could be 7.11.1, .2, etc.

The other nice thing about this is since Miguel started working on Mono
in 2000, it would be a close approximation of how many years have been
put into the release (and how mature the project is). If the version is
going to imply anything, it should imply the maturity. :)

Even if we decided to have individual version for each component, we
should still have a version number that encompasses the whole.

Just my thoughts,
Thomas
