Re: [Mono-list] Problems on FreeBSD with Beta 1

2004-05-21 Thread Scott Muc
Hey guys,

I've been documenting my progress and have made a pseudo article about
it. Here's the URL (sorry about the bad rendering in IE):

http://muc-central.com/articles/index.php?file=FreeBSD%20Mono

Looks like the same problems exist for both garbage collection
mechanisms. Does the included libgc also use pthreads?

Scott Muc

PS, please let me know if there are any inaccurate statements in that
article. I'll make changes to it right as soon as I can.

Re: [Mono-list] Mono Beta 1 on mandrake 9.2

2004-05-21 Thread Chris Turchin
Hi Tracy,

I was having similar problems after updating to beta1 and the new
mod_mono with mdk9.1 a while back (from cvs, not from the rpms,
however). It turned out to be mostly pebkac on my part: a combination
of:

a) permissions problems: since the new mod_mono starts the asp.net
process itself, it runs with the apache permissions - make sure the
apache user can read all the files that asp.net needs. for the asp.net
test directory, i think the makefile does that for you, but if you have
your own applications, this might play a role.

b) this line is no longer suppored in your httpd2.conf:
AddType application/x-asp-net .mono .aspx .ashx .asmx .ascx .asax
.config .cs .ascx

(probably why you are getting the browser message that you are getting)

hope that helps.

regards,
--chris

Yes. mod_mono tries to launch mod-mono-server and then waits for 3
seconds while trying to connect to the unix socket file. If it can't
connect after those 3 seconds, that message is output to the error_log
file.

May be you have a slow machine and should increase that time? (line 792

I can replicate this behavior, the same thing is happening here.
Something's not quite correct with the configure script. gc.h sits at
/usr/local/include and /usr/local/include/gc (I don't know why I do
have two copies). The configure script looks for Boehm GC at

[Mono-list] C# Patterns Web Site

2004-05-21 Thread Kevin Berry
Since C# is now popular on Linux ;-) it is a bit
irritating when you encounter a site like this...

http://www.dofactory.com/Patterns/PatternCommand.aspx

The Show Code link doesn't expand when used with
Mozilla. Obviously if you're using Linux it is a bit
of a problem to just go into IE and browse it. ;-)

I've submitted my comments via their contact page.
Could someone else also do the same. Maybe if enough
people complain they'll do something about this.

Thanks,
Kevin.

Well, Jim is the Microsoft representative to ECMA, and he told me the
same exact thing in person.

 i know novell is doing a research on the licensing/whatever issues with
 dotNet.

 imho it would be much better to respond to these threads with a single
 wait for the results of the legal review line,
 and not entering discussions, where the mono/novell people's only
 arguments are their beliefs and calculations about microsofts future
 moves.

This has been said before, that did not stop people from coming up with
new scenarios, and not reading what was said the last time.

 nobody have answer me ;( at time

 i ve reinstalled entire system, librairies... after a crash, and this i
 ve dont it 2 times.
 I think so that everything is fine, either libs ...

That might be a genuine bug in Mono. But:

* We do not know what platform the above is in.

* We might not have access to the platform you are

* You should probably try a supported distro first.

[Mono-list] Endian issue

2004-05-21 Thread Neale.Ferguson
Title: Endian issue

My S390 JIT is almost doing the right thing. Apart from some exception handling issues things look pretty good. However, when I run the compiler with the JIT the byte ordering is a problem. For example I produce:

000 4d5a  0600  0400

instead of

000 5a4d  0006  0004

S390 is big endian. I see there is a BitConverter class that works it out but does mcs use this or some other method?

[Mono-list] Mono Beta 1 on mandrake 9.2

2004-05-21 Thread Tracy Barlow

No taking that line out makes no difference.

Thanks people!

When I start writing my app (mbloggy) I was using Interfaces as plugins
(xmlrpc plugins), then I started reading info about SOAP and I'm in love
with it, the fact that SOAP supports any encoding makes me happy :-).

What I was looking for is to do the same that Plugins in Mono (M.
Icaza) says :-).

However, I'd like to ask something else: I want EVERY plugin be compiled
like I want, yeah, when I compile the plugin (the .dll) I'd like to
check the methods and validate the plugin, if the plugin is ok, compile
it and add some Assembly Info (AssemblyInfo, right?), where should I
look?, NUnit I think is to check compiled applications but I want to
'check' my code BEFORE being a .dll.

Thanks!

 Hi,

 I would use this approach:

 1) you must have a plug-in Interface defined, that each plug-in must
 implement
 2) when the application starts, use static System.IO.Directory.GetFiles()
 method to get the names of assemblies in the plug-in directory
 3) for each plug-in-assembly file call static
 System.Reflection.Assembly.LoadFrom() method to load the assembly into the
 current AppDomain, then call the method
 System.Reflection.Assembly.GetTypes() on the System.Reflection.Assembly
 instance that you've got from the previous LoadFrom() method
 4) for each Type that you get from previous GetType() method use the is
 operator to check if the particular type implements the plug-in interface,
 if it does, you have a type that implements your plug-in interface.
 5) call static Syste.Activator.CreateInstance() method with the type from
 previous step as parameter. Cast the result to the plug-in-interface type
 and store it for example in an array for later use.
 6) now you have an array of plug-in instances and can call the interface
 methods on them

 This is just an example, there are several other approaches which are more
 or less similar to this one... everything depends on the needs of your
 application.

 Quoting Pablo Fischer [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

  Hi!

  I would like to have some comments and suggestions about a issue.

  I am working in a Blog Client (mbloggy) that will work ONLY in SOAP (NO
  XMLRPC) for different CMS and Blogs (phpnuke, postnuke, jaws, etc, etc).
  To work with all these blogs I'm planning to use a 'plugin' system,
  based in assemblies, for example:

  If a developer wants the plugin for a CMS (like drupal), he can save his
  .dll plugin in ~./mbloggy/plugins and when mbloggy starts it will read
  default plugins (in /etc/mbloggy) and the user plugins. When mbloggy
  finds a new plugin it will be added to a 'drop down' (gtk#) so the user
  can use it.

  My problem?, yes, I don't know which is the best option:

  a) Use .dll assemblies as plugins. But, how to connect to each plugin
  from the front end?, exists a data type that can 'clone' another
  object?, so I can do something like this:

  Wrapper wrap = new Wrapper();
  wrap.Clone(assemblie.dll);
  wrap.Url = http://www.foo.bar.com/foo.aspx?wsdl;
  wrap.DeletePost(3);

  So I can use the 'methods' of assemblie.dll in the wrap object?.

  b) Or use just one .dll and let the developers to 'develop' just the
  WebService (server)?, So I can just work like this:

  Client c = new Client();
  c.Url = http://www.foo.bar.com/foo.aspx?wsdl;
  c.DeletePost(3);

  Which is the best option? and where can I find more information for the
  best option?.

  Thanks!
