2004-06-17 Thread KiOrKY
sorry miguel, its ever an honnour for me to echange with you, you can find more about
spread project on http://www.spread.org (logical, isnt it ? or google, the first link
i think)

its a big project according to its supported by darpa and nsa !
im not very impresive in this subject but as i have understood, something of com+n
can be remmappesd with spread !

one other thing is the ability of a module to do postgrsql replication !

another point, i dont knowx if u have this this next message about corporate usage of
mono, this can encourage you to follow this way ! :
--
in fact, my job (in adminsitrative enterprise) is to study mono's potential too. in
france, there politics events which push free logs up (one of the arguments is the
prize). Im enjoying testing mono because free logs are not so democratic in enterprise
environnmement... and so , to have salary im obliged to use m$ technologies ... that
there which mono come, if mono is able to do the same as m$ .Net, in my opinion many
enterprises will improve free logs! Further the more, mono will profit about *NIX
environnement.
One exemple is the case of this university which use novell shares!one other is mine
with postgresql which is faster!
My jo consisted in study the existant (of my enterprise) and try it on mono, testing
the community feedback and the migraztion's difficulty. The result is positive,
because for my perfs results, .Net is behind mono! (is there something wrong, my
results are too good !) These perfs tests consisted on running apllication on windows
and copy these application on linux and then run them!
so the good point, exploitation easy (nearly just to copy the exe and config file),
learning easy, System, System.Data ok, webservices ok, asp.Net ok (there re too many
goo points!)...
d
i ve two bad points . One is going to be fix: Winform
the worrying other : COM+ ... (especially transactions)

sorry i speach english like a spanish cow ...
best regards

[Mono-list] compiling for mono

I have a 3rd party

way to compile the component for use within my Mono applications? (obviously
this pre-supposes getting the source code from the vendor, but they have already

Anyone tried
something like this before? I am out of my depth here so any tips would be
greatly appreciated!

You might also want to look at JOTM:

 http://jotm.objectweb.org/

Of course none of this matters unless someone actually writes some code
to interface to these things. And it doesn't help in implementing
System.Messaging as that requires an interface to MSMQ or something that
functions in the same way ..

The Spread license is very similar to the Apache 1.1 license, which can
be summarized as BSD + advertising clause, so it isn't GPL compatible.

This probably isn't an issue, as the Mono class libraries are MIT/X11,
and thus could safely use the Spread code, though it would make
distribution and advertising very annoying and would prevent
System.Messaging from being Free software

 Or we could use the D-BUS (of Project Utopia?

D-BUS is dual-licensed under the Academic Free License and GPL 2, so it
avoids any advertising issues. (This is from dbus-0.21.tar.gz.)

However, last I knew D-BUS only works locally, and not across hosts,
which makes it of limited use for a general System.Messaging
architecture. Furthermore, it's limited to Unix systems (IIRC), which
would limit portability to Windows.

You always get the changes when changing the page, directives-driven
caching is limited to the output and dependent on the source page, and
can be made dependent on other conditions

 I can reset the mono service, and it will allways refresh, but you don't
 always have to do this.

You never should have to reset the service, just touch a dependency,
like Web.Config, then XSP will restart the ASP.NET application affected
(and no other).

  From a hosting-company point of view, it would be important not to have
 to restart server to get a ASPX page to refresh,
 anyone know what the scoop is here?

As I said the only chance caching would make a page not to refresh is if
you explicitly (by code) cache a page or parts of it without any
dependencies and without a timeout. That is just bad application design
not something inherent to ASP.NET caching, so bill your client the time
your team will need to debug the client app and correct it's caching
policies.

Without having tested it or beeing an expert, I would say yes. As Miguel
describes in his blog:
http://primates.ximian.com/~miguel/archive/2004/Mar-18.html

The example program references the gtk-sharp.jar which is first exposed
to java and then it is used when running the example through ikvm.

As a side note. What webmail are you using? It doesn't work very well

Hi,
I try to install mono-0.96(Beta 3)! I use Mandrake 10.0! I didn't use
linux before, but I want to see .NET code runnig on linux... Is there
a way haw can I see if I install glib properly as well as pkgconfig???
I'm from Slovakia so sorry for my english and please don't give me
advice like use redcarpet and download it from net, my notebook is not
connected to internet, thanks!!!
First I build glib-2.0.6:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
make
make install
then pkgconfig-0.15.0:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
make
make install
finnaly I try to buld mono but I get this error:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
Package glib-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `glib-2.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable

configure: error: Library requirements (glib-2.0 = 1.3.11) not met;
consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your
libraries are in
a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.
Just do that... I mean:
  echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH
will show you the list of paths where pkgconfig will look for libraries.
If /usr/local/pkgconfig doesn't appear in the list, do
  export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=$PKG_CONFIG_PATH:/usr/local/pkgconfig
and try again.
(syntax and/or paths may be wrong, I'm at work now and I don't have a Linux
box to check)

Sorry I misunderstood, I meant to say: find the location of glib-2.0.pc and
the rest of the files and add those paths to PKG_CONFIG_PATH. (man find).
If you can't find those files, you will need to install the corresponding
-devel
packages.

Thanks a lot!

The cost of it is the load of typemappings as well as initial connection setup,
like authentication, encoding that you won't have when using cache.

This can be heavy if you have a lot of open close statements in your code.

The drawback can be problems like yours where you can't get some consistent
behavior dependent on connection close, as the connection won't be closed until
you terminate your application. (Connection close after some timeout will be
implemented yet.)

I think that as long as you don't depends on connection close you should stay
with connection pooling.

Uhm, could you provide me a simple test case?

[Mono-list] mod_mono demo configuration Question

2004-06-17 Thread amerigo5 amerigo5
Hi,
I posted a comment about a mod_mono demo configuration issue at gotmono.com
and I thought I post it here too to get some responses. My question is that,
why is it that when I change the following httpd.conf configuration:

Alias /demo /usr/share/doc/xsp/test
MonoApplications /demo:/usr/share/doc/xsp/test
Location /demo
  SetHandler mono
/Location
to:
Alias /demo1 /usr/share/doc/xsp/test
MonoApplications /demo1:/usr/share/doc/xsp/test
Location /demo1
  SetHandler mono
/Location
the asp.net (.aspx) files are not being processed/displayed correctly. The
raw codes and HTML tags are being displayed instead of rendering it in a
browser? demo1 is just a sample. It could be anything. Also, this wasn't
the case in mod_mono-0.9 and prior to it. Comments are highly appreciated.
Thanks.

[Mono-list] Instantiating an object via AppDomain.CreateInstance

2004-06-17 Thread Yuri Leikind
Hello all,

If I instantiate an object via AppDomain.CreateInstance , and this object's
class has a constructor with parameters, I get the exception

Unhandled Exception: System.MissingMethodException: Constructor not found.

though needed parameters are passed to AppDomain.CreateInstance

I found it out trying an example from Programming C#, 2nd edition. This example
runs on MS .NET and fails on Mono.

Here is it :

using System;
using System.Runtime.Remoting;
using System.Reflection;
namespace ProgCSharp
{
   // for marshal by reference comment out
   // the attribute and uncomment the base class
   [Serializable]
   public class Point // : MarshalByRefObject
   {
  public Point (int x, int y)
  {
 Console.WriteLine( [{0}] {1},
System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName,
Point constructor);
 this.x = x;
 this.y = y;
  }
  public int X
  {
 get
 {
Console.WriteLine( [{0}] {1},
   System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName,
   Point x.get);
return this.x;
 }
 set
 {
Console.WriteLine( [{0}] {1},
   System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName,
   Point x.set);
this.x = value;
 }
  }
  public int Y
  {
 get
 {
Console.WriteLine( [{0}] {1},
   System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName,
   Point y.get);
return this.y;
 }
 set
 {
Console.WriteLine( [{0}] {1},
   System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName,
   Point y.set);
this.y = value;
 }
  }

   private int x;
   private int y;
}
// the shape class marshals by reference
public class Shape : MarshalByRefObject
{
   public Shape(int upperLeftX, int upperLeftY)
   {
  Console.WriteLine( [{0}] {1},
 System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName,
 Shape constructor);
  upperLeft = new Point(upperLeftX, upperLeftY);
   }
   public Point GetUpperLeft( )
   {
  return upperLeft;
   }
   public void ShowUpperLeft( )
   {
  Console.WriteLine( [{0}] Upper left: {1},{2},
 System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName,
 upperLeft.X, upperLeft.Y);
   }
   private Point upperLeft;
}
public class Tester
{
   public static void Main( )
   {
  Console.WriteLine( [{0}] {1},
 System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName,
 Entered Main);
  // create the new app domain
  AppDomain ad2 =
 AppDomain.CreateDomain(Shape Domain);
  // Assembly a = Assembly.LoadFrom(ProgCSharp.exe);
  // Object theShape = a.CreateInstance(Shape);
  // instantiate a Shape object
  ObjectHandle oh = ad2.CreateInstance(
 ProgCSharp,
 ProgCSharp.Shape, false,
 System.Reflection.BindingFlags.CreateInstance,
 null, new object[] {3, 5},
 null, null, null );
  Shape s1 = (Shape) oh.Unwrap( );
  s1.ShowUpperLeft( ); // ask the object to display
  // get a local copy? proxy?
  Point localPoint = s1.GetUpperLeft( );
// assign new values
localPoint.X = 500;
localPoint.Y = 600;
// display the value of the local Point object
Console.WriteLine( [{0}] localPoint: {1}, {2},
   System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName,
   localPoint.X, localPoint.Y);
s1.ShowUpperLeft( ); // show the value once more

   }
}

I saw the same problem as well. I fixed it by making a symlink to

The real cause of this problem is the location Mono uses to look for its
config files, it's strange that it would be probing in /usr/etc, instead
of just /etc.

It looks like your Location /demo1 tag is probably wrong. /demo1
should not be the virtual directory, but the physical directory on the

maybe it's worth a shot.

I posted a comment about a mod_mono demo configuration issue at

Still getting the same problem. I did what Jonathan Stowe suggested
and edited the config file in /data/mono to point to libc.dylib on my

as you suggested. My system looks like this now:

Actual mono config dir:

Symlink dirs:

Any other ideas?

[Mono-list] IKVM+Rhino=JS for mono?

2004-06-17 Thread Stuart Ballard
It occurred to me that it might be possible to run Rhino under IKVM to
get a quick boost into a mature ECMAScript implementation for Mono.
Presumably, with a couple of tweaks to ignore the cli. prefix that
IKVM inserts for .NET classes, it would do most of what's required for
the .NET platform's JavaScript.

I have no time or knowledge to pursue this myself, but I'm throwing the
idea out there in case anyone wants to run with it. It might be possible
to get Rhino+IKVM to production quality quicker than the from-scratch
ECMAScript implementation that's being worked on at the moment. Worst
case, we end up with two high-quality ECMAScript implementations to
choose between :)

[Mono-list] ADO.NET plans for Mono 1.0

2004-06-17 Thread Sébastien Robitaille

Hi,

Can somebody tell me
what are the plans for ADO.NET regarding the functionnalities that will be
supported in Mono 1.0, particulary for ODBC and SybaseClient ? Will there be
any "service packs" after 1.0 to fix bugs ? Whateffortsare actually
put into fixing bugs for these twoadapters?

I am presently
trying to use these two adapters in order to access a Sybase 11.5 database, but
I encounteredmany problems with both (I filled several bug reports...). I
also started looking at the code myself to see if I can help, but unfortunately
time is running against me.We presently have an "un-official GO" to
develop a new project using Mono, buta proof of concept has to be done and
the database access isa major part of it.
If I had the choice,
I would prefer to use SybaseClient instead of ODBC since it doesn't require any
external tools (such as unixODBC and freeTDS). But actually, ODBC is the only
adapter that worksin my environment, and it has many problems (Resource
leaks, connections never closed, datatypes not supported by the
DataReader).

Ideally, what I
would like to hear is a clear commitment that at least one of them
willwork in Mono 1.0 :-)
I am also interested
to hear about any commercial success story with Mono since it could really help
in the acceptance of the platform for our new project.

Hi:

Currently I'm helping Cesar Lopez Nataren to port the Rhino Lexer and
Parser stuff, and then finish the JScript compiler implementation. Maybe
it would be a good idea to finish to port to C#, than trying to use them
with IKVM, since you would have to run ikvm on top on mono, and then run
rhino on top of ikvm, representing a big overhead.

By the way, if you are interested in the first approach, you could try
to port Rhino and we could finish the JScript compiler earlier.

Carlos.

If you use ikvmc, the overhead isn't that huge and could be reduced
further with a small amount of work (which would help other users of
IKVM as well).

A small amount of overhead for mapping certain method calls (not all) on
java.lang.Object and java.lang.String is unavoidable, as is a larger
amount of overhead when exceptions are used, but exceptions are slow
anyway and shouldn't be used in performance-critical parts of the code.

The rest of the current overhead, as far as I know, is memory overhead
caused by the need to have all of IKVM.GNU.Classpath.dll and all of
IKVM.Runtime.dll loaded even when not all of it is in use. Classpath.dll
could be split up by Java package so that you might only need to load
the java.lang equivalents and maybe java.io. IKVM.Runtime.dll could have
the JIT compiler split out because you don't need it when you're in
static mode, unless you're doing dynamic loading of classes. I believe
that the IKVM author plans on doing these things anyway, eventually,
although they won't make Mono 1.0.

It occurs to me that perhaps Rhino *does* do dynamic loading of classes
and so that overhead would be significant. Still, I imagine that adding
a CIL-generator as an alternative to the Java bytecode generator would
be less work than porting the entire code to C# - and you could benefit
from ongoing improvements to Rhino in the future. (Of course, you can
use System.Reflection.Emit directly from Java code to make the CIL
generator simpler to write)

Obviously I can't tell you what to do, and like I said, I don't have
time to work on this myself. I can only suggest what I think would save
you some work...

2004-06-17 Thread Vadim B. Guzev
Hello ,

It seems to me that the bug I submitted two months or more ago (it
was actually resolved in mono 0.91) appeared again in Beta 3 :-(

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Unzip the attached archive.
2. cd testdeserialization/object/;mcs obj.cs;mono obj.exe

3. cd ../;
   Change the path /home/vadim/archive/tests/testdeserialization/object

[Mono-list] RE: [Mono-devel-list] Seemless Executibles?

2004-06-17 Thread Andrew Arnott
 Don't quote me on this since I'm not a PE format guru but I believe
 at least on Windows .Net executibles pull a small feature to fake out
 the execution environment. When you run or double click on a .Net built
 exe file, the system loads the binary where the PE header tells the system
 to load a publicly exported start function found in mscoree.dll and
 from there on out, this is responsible for IL execution. The binary
 executible basically does a redirect to the IL interpter so the OS
 can't tell the difference and handles these binaries like old Win32
 bins.

I don't think that is right. A .NET virus was supposedly written, which
modified the header information you speak of, but it was totally
ineffective, because it is just stub code. A .NET signature in the PE
header just lets the NT kernel know that it is a .NET assembly and the
runtime is loaded by the kernel deliberately. This is why the virus didn't
work. This is all hearsay, as I am not an expert myself.

 So here is the big money question: Can the mono runtime do this? Has
 anyone even thought about implementing this? Or does mono already
 do this and I've been writing little shell scripts for nothing? :-)

There is already a way to do this and use pure Linux convention:
See this web page for how to make CLI assemblies run directly from the
command line:

statically link Cairo into libgdiplus to avoid an extra dependency.
Turned out our trickery didn't work correctly.

The download page has now been updated to include updated Cairo and
libgdiplus packages. Please use those instead.

Sorry for the inconvience,

Mono.Data.SybaseClient is modeled after the System.Data.SqlClient
provider.   Both use Mono.Data.Tds.
The System.Data.SqlClient support is good because people have been
maintaining it. Unfortuantely, people have not been maintaining the
parts of the TDS protocol which works for Sybase.

I would look at freetds and jtds to see what's going on. Use my
favorite debug tool Console.WriteLine().

Alternatives:
1. You could use our System.Data.OleDb or GDA# (found in GTK#) and
libgda to connect to freetds.
2. An interesting alternative to try is use the jtds JDBC provider on
IKVM running on Mono.

What problems are you having with Mono.Data.SybaseClient?

I think that some of the points you exposed are valid and are very
interesting. However, the Rhino lexer parser have together only about
300 lines of code, so that is not *that much* code.

However, it looks like the approach you mentioned could be valid for
other projects that could need it and have a bigger complexity.

Hi Daniel,

 What problems are you having with Mono.Data.SybaseClient?

With SybaseClient, I cannot open a connection (exception thrown, see
http://bugzilla.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=60320)

I also tried the Generic Tds Provider. With this one, the connection opens, but as
soon as I execute a simple SQL request (SELECT)
with the datareader, the program hangs (I did not investigate why).

 1. You could use our System.Data.OleDb or GDA# (found in GTK#) and
 libgda to connect to freetds.
 2. An interesting alternative to try is use the jtds JDBC provider on
 IKVM running on Mono.

I will have a look at OleDb and GDA#.
The alternative #2 is not interesting for me, because it is actually an argument
against using mono for our project (The other
option for the project is to use Java).

As I said in my original message, we have to do a proof of concept that will influence
the choice of platform (mono vs Java). I
would personnaly prefer mono, but the risk must be acceptable... If the database
access is shaky for Sybase, we will undoubtedly
choose Java.

The choice of Database is very important for us since all our actual products use
Sybase.

 I would look at freetds and jtds to see what's going on. Use my
 favorite debug tool Console.WriteLine().

Since I do not have any TDS background, I think that the learning curve is too high
for now and it would require too much of my
time. I will probably invest some time tracking bugs in the Odbc provider instead ...

Please let me know if there is any progress for the SybaseClient provider.

It looks like your Location /demo1 tag is probably wrong. /demo1
should not be the virtual directory, but the physical directory on the
hard drive. Try that. I'm not an expert with Apache, I'm afraid. But
maybe it's worth a shot.

I posted a comment about a mod_mono demo configuration issue at
gotmono.com
and I thought I post it here too to get some responses. My question is
that,
why is it that when I change the following httpd.conf configuration:
Alias /demo /usr/share/doc/xsp/test
MonoApplications /demo:/usr/share/doc/xsp/test
Location /demo
   SetHandler mono
/Location
to:
Alias /demo1 /usr/share/doc/xsp/test
MonoApplications /demo1:/usr/share/doc/xsp/test
Location /demo1
   SetHandler mono
/Location
the asp.net (.aspx) files are not being processed/displayed correctly.
The
raw codes and HTML tags are being displayed instead of rendering it in a
browser? demo1 is just a sample. It could be anything. Also, this
wasn't
the case in mod_mono-0.9 and prior to it. Comments are highly
appreciated.
Thanks.

[Mono-list] Error with .config files

2004-06-17 Thread Carlos Alberto Cortez
Hi,

I asked this at IRC but it looks like nobody has had this problem: I
recenlty updated from cvs (both mono mcs and gtk-sharp), but when I
try to run any Gtk-sharp app it complies:

Unhandled Exception: System.DllNotFoundException: libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll

I tried copying the dll to so mappings from the
mono/gac/gtk-sharp/version/gtk-sharp.dll.config to the main mono config
file ($prefix/etc/mono/config) and it worked. But when I try to run an
app with glade it complies again with a similar message (this time
telling that libglade is not present). Then I copied the mappings from
glade-sharp.dll.config to the main config file.

However, I'm needing more and more copies of the config files. So I'm
thinking that maybe the installed runtime is having problems or ignoring
the .config files that come with the assemblies that need the mappings.

I've updated from cvs again, but the problem remains.

Regards,
Carlos.
