John,
I'm afraid you are missing the point. I don't care whether particular
linen-backing companies are hacks or not. I'm sure some of them are
positively professional. My main point is that the linen-backing process
itself is a travesty. The fact that you own good looking posters on linen
that
Great stuff! I am sad I won't get to auction them.

Well here's my thoughts. I think you should Linen back your poster.

Seems like earlier this year someone on MOPO was talking about a restorer that
somehow starched one sheets, or something to that effect. But I'm not sure if
that is better for the paper or not. I believe you could still see the
markings
on the back and so on with this resto method.

While I respect Sam's point of view, I must disagree in part. The needs of a
museum, the mission of a museum curator --- are very different from the needs
of an ordinary collector.
I'm not saying that his protocol for old posters is wrong, but the reality of
the situation is that not every
Thanks Kirby and Dario for your additional thoughts on this.
I think that there are probably collectors and dealers who can be a bit too
trigger-happy with the linen. to use backing to remove perfectly innocent fold
lines from an otherwise unimpaired poster strikes me as excessive. however, in

Hi Kirby,
I hear what you're saying, but I must disagree with you here. I'm not sure
what you mean by super-archival way. If by that you mean super complex and
expensive, that is not at all what I am advocating. In fact, what I'm
suggesting is much simpler and not necessarily that much more
The whole point of conservation is NOT to make an antique piece look the way
it did the day it was made. If you want that, just buy a Photoshopped repro.
The point of conservation is to, firstly, not do any further damage;
secondly, to retard as much as possible any deterioration process by
Linenbacking is something that is a poorly used tool in my opinion
restoration is not the same as linenbacking, though they are usually
done in combination
#1 linenbacking to eliminate folds to me is a fool's game.
#2 restoration to eliminate minor defects is a fool's game
#3 inenbacking
Hello everyone:
I noticed an item on ebay which interested me and I attempted to send a
question to the seller.
And I seem to have discovered that ebay has removed the ASK THE SELLER
function. Has anyone else noticed this, and how can this be possible?

Hi Dario,
You raise some very interesting points here. I think most of what you say
below is factually correct, but ultimately, I sense a sales pitch.
Mind you, this is not a comment on your work, which I have not seen. You
sound like you know what you're talking about. However let me address some

I could live with a little tape in the borders, as it is in your poster, Rich.
The question is, would you be just as happy with your Dracula poster if the
tape ran down John Carradine's face?
So when are we going to see this poster in your Wednesday auction?
Great poster! I want one!

Walter, it's the Contact Seller link that's been removed. There is an Ask a

Maybe they are trying to stop buyers from making offers and completing the
deal off-eBay (not that I can blame any buyer or seller who would try to go
that route).
