Please be aware that you DO NOT have to have a gmail account to subscribe to the list. That is only necessary if you want to use the web interface. You can request to join the list from any email address (as far as I know) by sending a message to:

Note, you can join from whatever address you want AND create a google account to use the web interface. Your preferred email address will receive and be able to send messages as always. Only posts made via the web interface (I am guessing a bit, here) will appear to come from your gmail account. In such a configuration, you might want to turn off email notifications of postings for your google account to prevent them from going, unseen, to your gmail account.
