Dear Emma, I don't know if there is too much difference except for correct usage. Phylogeny is a noun taken to mean the development history of phyla or phylogenesis. Phylogenetics uses the suffix -ic on the end which makes the noun phylogeny into an adjective. I would tend to use phylogeny as
