But 5 + 2 x 6 can be confusing without the parenthesis. Without the
parenthesis the answer is 17 because of the order of operations rule. For the
answer to be 42 you have to have parenthesis around 5 + 2. You can't just go
from left to right, you have to multiply and divide before you add or
OK, another teachable moment due to the large number of "me toos" on the
comprehension materials post. I recently took the CBEST here in CA so in the
interest of preparing any of you for a high stakes test, here we go.
