I found one female Spruce Grouse on Lake County Hwy 1, .1 mile east of mile
marker 302. This is west of Lake 2. She was picking grit off the highway and
flushed when another car went by. The time was between 8:00 and 8:30. I'd
been doing dawn patrol for Spruce Grouse on Cty. 2, but it was
I am having - right now - the most birds I have ever had at a feeder
station. My flock of redpolls has grown to over 50 intermingled with
some 20 goldfinches, some 10-15 house finches, a handful of mixed
woodpeckers, robins, and mourning doves. And down to only a few pine
siskins. I get
Went out with a falconer in Dickinson Co. Iowa and saw a covey of around a
dozen that apparently knew what to do just before a falcon was put up over
them. I wonder if the winter weather we've had thus far will knock back their
population levels again. As I understand it, they were just

I am forwarding this request from DNR biologist Steve Wilson:This is turning
out to be another boreal owl irruption year. As with most such events, a small
proportion of the birds become hungry enough they're forced to hunt in the
daytime, and unfortunately, in some cases perish. Once again I'm
Probably 100 redpolls at the feeder on a daily basis with one or two hoarys
mixed in to catch my attention every so often.? Lots of pine siskens as well.?
They're the ones who will break me on the thistle feed this year.? The
chickadees, downys and hairys are there on a daily basis as well as
oops.? A pet peave of mine, and I fell into it's trap.
I'm north of Duluth in Gnesen township.

At about noon Monday, I found a flock of about 20 White-winged Crossbills in
rural Winona County.
I would recommend using Mapquest over Googlemaps for navigational purposes.
Googlemaps has roads mislabeled in this case.
From the town of Homer, which is just downriver from Winona on Hwy 61,
Another flock of about 20 white-winged crossbills was seen about the same
time in my front yard at 1113 Country Drive in Winona. This is in Gilmore

At the east outflow at Black Dog Refuge I photographed a Common Merganser
that appeared to be wounded. It held its right wing up in the air and
slowly flapped it. The left wing was folded normally.
