I had pretty good luck today getting quite close to a number of species (not
only birds) I usually can't get too close to.
I started on Superior National Forest road 424 (New Tomahawk Road), east of the

Sorry for the delay but as I left Duluth on Saturday my parents called
and let me know my sister was at the hospital having a baby and they
were on their way into town. Then I got sick Sunday and am finally up

This afternoon I enjoyed seeing my first spring migrant a male Red-winged
Blackbird singing on territory from a cattail marsh along Black Dog Road in
Dakota County. For me here in the Metro this is about a week earlier than
usual and a welcome sight as a harbinger of what Spring has to offer.
I just added a new Yard / Hennepin County bird, I just had a flyover of a
White-winged Crossbill while I was walking out to the mail box..

Some lucky first-graders got to enjoy the last Winter Birds program
of the season at Carpenter today. Though not among their target
species for our little walk, redpolls and siskins showed up for the
fun. Staff members also reported that ww crossbills, heard rather than
seen during the walks, had
And, speaking of harbingers of Spring, Horned Larks are indeed being
seen state-wide.
On Tuesday (3/3), we traveled across the state following a diagonal
line northwest (on the less heavily trafficked roads) from Goodhue
county in the southeast to our home county Otter Tail in the west-
