This afternoon's quest was some improvement in skill at identifying
shorebirds, so I went looking for the W. Sandpiper. After running into
a construction roadblock, I parked the DeLorme Atlas in my lap, and
found another way to the farm pond where it had been reported. It took
about a half hour, ev
Found another female oriole building another nest about 20 yds away from the

Okay, so I've been a baby about the Cooper's Hawk swooping through my bird
buffet and scaring all my birds away. Well, now I'm not going to whine as much
because I found the nest--within 150 yards of my home. I can't watch it from
my house, but I can set up a chair in my south yard and observe

It was "at" the gas station on the northwest corner of Cahill and 80th St in
Inver Grove Hts. (Perhaps a migrant "refueling" for the next leg of its
journey?)
It ate in one of the small trees just to the west of the
Just got a message (now 1:00pm) that my brother, Donn, found the bird this

No doubt of it! I birded around Pope County much of this week and had a
similar, but anecdotal, experience. Martins were trying to feed low over

most of Minnesota. Preliminary numbers here in Kandiyohi county suggest we
had about 10% mortality by late yesterday, with a second group of birds too
weak to fly and soon to succumb. Combined with last year's large chic
