What: Boreal Wings Gala (a benefit event for Friends of Sax-Zim Bog) When: Sunday January 29, 2-4:30 pm Where: Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley, MN Cost: $25 per person with Advance Registration via www.saxzim.org (Kids 17 & Under FREE). Registration includes 1-year membership. (TODAY, SATURDAY, IS LAST DAY FOR ONLINE $25 REGISTRATION) $30 at the door. Why: fundraiser for Friends of Sax-Zim Bog, a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to Preserve, Protect and Promote your Sax-Zim Bog Important Bird Area Schedule: Come early to hike the nature center's many trails! Also check out the new building and interactive exhibits. 2pm—Appetizers, mingle, silent auction 2:20pm—Sparky updates everyone on Friends of Sax-Zim Bog projects 3-3:50 pm—Olaf Danielson speaks about his record setting Big Year in 2016 (photos) Olaf has had MANY adventures on his Big Year (Do you know what Black Bear breath smells like?) and he'll share the highs and lows, and the rarest of bird sightings, and stories from the most exotic North American locations. He'll also have photos to accompany his stories. 3:50-4 pm—Silent Auction wraps up 4-4:30 pm—Mingling, Appetizers OLAF DANIELSON is an author, birder, religious scholar, storyteller, and adventurer that typically goes where few men or women dare to go. Olaf shares his adventures from his 2016 Big Year on his blog, www.bigyear2016.com. Some claim he could be the most interesting man in the world. He even likes Dos Equis Beer! Olaf famously did a "nude" bird Big Year in 2013 and amassed over 500 species while sans clothes! Olaf lived on Park Point in Duluth back in the late 80s while going to medical school...But he was not a hardcore birder then. He is now a resident of Milbank, South Dakota (within a stone's throw of Minnesota), but he grew up on the family sawmill in a Swedish Immigrant community (Falun) in northern Wisconsin, graduating Grantsburg High School in 1984. He graduated Ripon College, in Ripon WI (88), Medical School at the University of Minnesota (92), and trained in Pennsylvania and Iowa Olaf is also an entrepreneur, married, and father of three wonderful young adults, an ER physician (retired CEO of an ER Group), an avid birder, a naturist, an international pike and sucker fisherman, and he is a collector and expert of north-European art. His motto, is to say yes when anyone invites him to tag along on an adventure.
