This morning there were still extensive rafts of coots on Lake Christina north
of Ashby MN along Hwy. 78. I also observed 3 large flocks of pelicans floating
among the coots. I didn't have time to count them but would estimate 50 or so
all together.
Also, are there Merlins around the area
I'll start with the puzzle. The bird was in a grassy area/pasture within a 1/4
mile of water. It seemed to be about waterthrush size, had the whitish,
striped sides eye stripe of the waterthrush or oven bird but had a rusty cap
like a palm warbler and distinctly yellow chin/throat area and

The pine grosbeaks have continued a sporadic appearance. I spotted 3 both
today and yesterday. I cut up an extra apple and put it in the tray feeder
they frequent. Can't tell if they've eaten any or not.
The mourning dove made a brief cameo this afternoon and the cardinal pair were
back
The pine grosbeaks flew in early today. Now there are 8.

Yesterday's 3 pine grosbeaks brought friends to our feeders crabapple tree
today. There were 6 late this morning. The bohemian waxwings have not been

My husband spotted a Red-headed woodpecker about 3 mi. S. of the city of

at some roadkilled creature. I've never heard of such behavior before. Anyone
else?

Just a general question here. When the rest of you add birds to your life
lists do you include ones that were observed only because they were dead
(road kills, radio towers, window-strikes ...)? I feel a little guilty
about it but justify it thinking that they were at least wild birds and not
We had a Rose-breasted Grosbeak hanging out around and on our suet feeder most
of yesterday afternoon. No orioles here yet but I've got oranges out. A pair
of robins has begun a nest in a tree near our house and have thrilled my kids
by using some cloth strips they put out last week.

I watched a large flock of Common Golden-eyes displaying this afternoon.
There was one male (possibly 2) who had the markings of a Common, but his
head was quite definitely not green but blue or bluish purple. Is that
