Thanks Jason,
Just an FYI. There are plans (and $$) for the DNR to redo the observation
platform which should occur this summer.

The Hanska Snowy Owl has been seen most of this morning but a little
farther North than previously posted. It has been sitting 2.6 miles N of
the last house as you go North from Hanska. It is on the ground on the
West side of CR13 and about 150 yards off the road.

During the Lac qui Parle CBC Monday, there was no indication of a Snowy owl
at the LQP Valley High School as reported earlier, in spite of a thorough
search. However one was seen about 3 miles to the SE of the school at the
corner of 280th St and 321st Ave. Same bird

The North Dakota Birds listserve had similar problems about a month ago.
Here is what they explained.

Yesterday, I counted 8 fox sparrows and 30-40 juncos feeding actively under
and on the sunflower and thistle feeders. Today I was only able to see 3
juncos at most and most times I looked out, it was totally empty under the
feeders. Amazing what a sunny 70 degree day will do.

While driving through the snow storm on the edge of New Ulm this afternoon,
all of a sudden a loose flock of about 20 Franklin's gulls appeared for a
few moments and then disappeared again into the whiteness - very eery to
see them in these conditions.

After a very slow winter at the feeders, things really picked up today with
even the robins and grackles shouldering their way to the trough. Have had
a red-breasted nuthatch in the yard for the last 10 days and today had a
swamp sparrow show up under the feeders.

While not common, mallard (and in some parts of the country, Canada goose)
nests in trees are not exceptionally rare either.

Yesterday I found about 200 red phalaropes on the sewage ponds just
southeast of the town of Heron Lake. The only other shorebirds present
were a 20 or so killdeer. There were 40-50 Franklin's gulls and a
smattering of mallards and wood ducks.
