A glorious evening on the west side near Matoska Park. At least four male
yellow-headed blackbirds, a sora, catbirds singing out their hearts, yellow
rumps galore and Canada geese on multiple nests.

For the past several days a small flock of Canada geese has been mixed in
with the swans in open water just above the Gull Lake dam. Swans are
displaying territorial mating rituals.

Today Marsha Moreen and I found a few new shorebird species. 1.5 miles north of
Salt Lake in a flooded field on the west side of the road we found 29 Lesser
and 6 Greater Yellowlegs, 4 Wilson’s Snipe, 4 Semipalmated Plover and 10

Salt Lake in Lac Qui Parle County is still primarily ice covered except for the
south west corner and along the edges. That being said the temperature out here
today is 57 degrees with a 15 mph wind from the south. I would hope that the
ice will be gone this week with consistent warmer weather.
Friday afternoon we arrived at Prairie Marsh Farm to open up the farm house for
the spring and fill the bird feeders that had been empty for five months. After
2 inches of snow overnight numerous birds soon found the feeders or were
seeking shelter in the grove.

Yesterday six pine grosbeaks landed in a pine tree in our yard north of
Brainerd. Gorgeous birds! They found something they liked in the branches
of the tree, but they didn't stay long.

Today at 2 PM I refound the Black-necked Stilt previously found by Garret Wee.
It flew into the north end of Lone Tree Lake which is located NE of Cottonwood
in Lyon County. Also present were 3 Marbled Godwit, 3 Greater Yellowlegs, many
Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral SP, Dunlin, and many species
There is a Yellow-rumped Warbler fall out at the mud flats at the Tacoma field
on highway 32. I counted over 130.

Sunday I visited Salt Lake and areas east to Hadenville WMA then south to
Prairie Marsh Farm.
At Salt Lake there were thousands of water fowl including over 1,000 Northern
Shovelers, 100 Ruddy Duck, Lesser and Greater Scaup, Bufflehead, A. Coots,
Teals, Gadwall and one A. Widgeon. Also !00

Yesterday afternoon we had 3 Baltimore Orioles at one time. We have two
feeders, one in front and one in back of our house. Two orioles were mature
and one no t yet in full breeding plumage.

Last weekend over 100 birders from around the state searched the lakes,

This morning around 9:30 at Prairie Marsh Farm in west central LQP County we
had a flock of over 129 White-throated Sparrows land in our farm yard. This
flock also included FOY 2 White-crowned Sparrows, 2 Pine Siskin, one Lincoln's
and one Harris's Sparrow. One hour later on our way to Salt
3 PM recent arrival of shore birds to the south shore of Salt Lake in Western
Lac Qui Parle County. 300 + including 5 Willet, 20 + Long- billed Dowitcher, 4
Wilson's Phalarope, 4 Dunlin, 2 Greater Yellow-legs.

This morning on Salt Lake I found 3 American Avocets, 41Dunlin, 2 Black-
bellied Plover, 1 Dowitcher, 29 Eared Grebe, 4 Bobolink and lots of ducks
including Ruddy Duck.
Yesterday on Millers Lake in Yellow Medicine Co were over 100 Dunlin, 4
Dowitcher, Least and Semi-palmated Sandpipers. Ken
Surprised by a single Ruddy Turnstone at Wahibo Marsh today at 3 PM. Also 60+
Caspian Terns, Black and Forester Terns, Bonaparte and Herring Gulls. Ken Larson

Last weekend the 40th annual Salt Lake Birding Weekend took place in Lac Qui
Parle, Big Stone, and northern Yellow Medicine counties. Over 90 birders from
around the state met at 7 AM at the Marietta American Legion. Over the three
day weekend we found 143 different species, 133 on Saturday,
Around 6 PM today I had a nice warbler wave in our neighborhood south of 394
and west of County Rd 73.

Very windy today, typical for for this area. 1,000's of ducks and geese still
in the area particularly at Salt Lake, the south section of Sweetwater WMA and
at Hadenville WMA.
Shorebird activity is increasing! One American Avocet at south unit of
Sweetwater, you need to walk in for views. At
This evening at Big Willow Park along Minnehaha Creek in Minnetonka I found a
number of first of the year (for me) migrants.

On Saturday around 11 AM I reported finding a pair of Blue Grosbeaks in SW LQP
County. Both birds flew west about 200 feet where the Male perched on the upper
branch of a brush pile with the female just below. In good light I got a great
look at both of them, the male in beautiful adult
